I bodyboard, so we could go surf and stuff together.

I've been living in Melbourne for the last 6 months, it has the biggest and most regular shred scene, generally there will be kicks once or twice a week...as Jeremy said, if you organise something, it will happen.

If you want to surf, live somewhere along the east coast, there's beach breaks everywhere and it doesn't take too much to get an uncrowded beach out of the city.

There's a lot of chef/cook work around, there are specific hospitality agencies that do that sort of stuff.

Nationals in 2008 wil be in Canberra at Easter, but you're not coming til 2009, so that wouldn't really be a concern. Perth is also a really cool city, apart from the fact is a 5 hour flight from most other cities in Australia!

Australia has amazing amounts of variety with its waves, it's pretty awesome. I went out to the beach for the first time in ages the other day, I got smashed really hard haha!

A quick update,
i expect to be in australia by mid january.
i will be arriving in Sydney at a presently unknown date, and will likely remain there for a few days before heading to melborne. After that i'll likely made a decision as to where i'll spend my time.
Any one who might be able to put me up for a couple nights at the beginning of my transition into aussie life would be greatly appreciated.

actually, australia is in the full swing of summer in january, which is the hottest time of the year. And let's face it, winter in australia ain't gonna be shit when compared to a peg city winter

Because we're in the Southern Hemisphere our winter starts in June, although as Andrew says, Aussie winter is not really comparable with Canadian winter. Even where I live, which is one of the coldest capital cities in Australia (I'm not sure if it gets colder in Canberra or not), the average winter day time temp is still over 10 degrees C. In somewhere like Brisbane it is over 20 degrees in winter. Of course if you want it colder you can head up to some mountains somewhere, but Australia is basically only populated around the coast where it's temperate.

There's always room for footbaggers to stay with me in Hobart.

Fear not, i don't plan to couch surf my entire trip. i want to get some short term place of my own while i'm there, but i would like to do a quick whirl wind trip around the east coast to see what's out there and where i might like to set up shop.

Summer is a good time to be in Hobart. I'll try arrange a trip out to see our native forests too, with possibly the biggest trees in the world. Apparently my second cousin is heading down this summer to be part of the blockade to stop the loggers so that should be a good trip so long as you don't mind smelly hippies

You can have a run in my touch football team too
