Barefoot Practice

Post by Omnified »

Hey, I'm pretty new to the footbag scene but I've been hooked up to it for a while and I was wondering if practicing barefoot is okay in the long run if I plan to shred with shoes in the long run since I'm pretty much stuck in this house during the winter and not allowed to wear shoes. Thanks!

hey!

Yeah, barefoot can definitely help you in practice! It'll help speed up your legs and get the motions of tricks stuck in your mind. I practice some barefoot stuff most nights before sleep. It's helped.

ps. you live in Philly?! We should kick! PM me for info?

I'm not an expert, actually I'm a beginner but common sense makes me believe that I would help a little because you could develop foot-eye coordination. The surface of your barefoot, I imagine, would be smaller than your shoe, thus, if you practice barefoot then move to a shoe, would give you better foot-eye coordination.

Yeah, everyone preaches the basics. Although I'm currently footbagless, hah, I got it taken up at school. It was thrown across the room at me.

That sucks man, even though in class that happens to me and my teacher doesn't care too much. But anyways would you have a recommendation on a footbag aside from online shopping at local retail stores? I currently have a WHAM-O 3 panel one.

You might want to ask an expert, guys and gals like Mosher, Matt Cross, Moxie and a few others would probably help you.
I've been told a Mr. Sandbag from freedomfootbags.com is a good starter bag.
Also, try to go for a 4,8,or 32 panel, as what I've beentold
Don't hold me to my word, like I said, ask the experts.

If you're keen, get a hand made 32 panel - lots of people sell them (get one directly from another footbagger unless you know that it's made by one, as many websites sell shitty made in pakistan ones). They might be expensive, depending on your income, and don't last that long, but they're easily the best bags to use, and good for your technique as well.

Regarding barefoot play, if you have no choice, I'm sure it's better than not playing at all, but because it's slightly different (ie. you can move faster and you have to clipper stall on a different part of your foot), it'll also give you more things to work on when you play with shoes, so if you have a choice between shoes and barefeet, I'd recommend shoes. That said, I could see strong merit in a training regime that alternated shoes on and shoes off, although I've never tried such a regime.
