Having "not to be able to play with the pros" is a selfish reason to not want footbag become mainstream.
Some players work out their asses becoming good, so they deserve becoming famous, getting rich and wearing bling blig.
If you can play with some pros once a year, how would that change if footbag became mainstream?
In some cases you could have more chances to shred with professionals, since there were more of them and a bigger chance that someone's coming to your town.
Footbag doesn't have to become super popular, but professionals getting the credit they deserve is enough.
for me, i'd really like footbag to become more popular because i really dont have anyone to play with. and if you do it where i live its considered "very junior high"

To be honest, not being able to play with the top pros won't change a fucking thing about my footbag experience.
I don't even like playing with the big names!! I really dislike feeling like my strings aren't special enough and I have way way more fun playing with people around my level.
Just putting it out there.
Frankly, footbag is too stupid looking for it to ever become cool, and it nearly exclusively attracts beta's and awkward shy people, so that's not likely to change for a while.
I agree that not getting to play with the pros wouldn't really change much. I find it hard to believe that's a significant reason for anybody playing footbag, and of course unless you're the best in the world (or your region), there are always going to be people who will play with you who are better than you as well.
Personally I would probably prefer to play with players who are better than me, but the novelty of getting to play with anybody guiltless is exciting as well (I find myself saying "nice" whenever I see somebody else hit a ripwalk these days ).
I'm not sure about footbag being stupid looking. The first time I saw freestyle footbag I thought it looked so cool that I wanted to learn how to do it.
I don't think footbag is stupid looking, and neither do the people that pass by me at school and yell "WHOA!" Personally I think it's because it looks harder than it really is, and lazy people don't want to put time and effort into things like that. That's my hypothesis.
Along with what I said 3 posts ago, now that I think about it, footbag isn't an easily accessible sport. You can go to any sport shop anywhere and just pick up a soccer ball and mess around with it. The only good footbags are sold online by stitchers. The only good footbag shoes are sold online (sometimes shoe stores). The only instructions for tricks are online. And none of them are easy to find or fully comprehend until you talk to other players online (or if you're lucky, a player that lives by you) about the sport.
I'd say.
If footbag would become mainstream, there would be more places to get Lavers, etc.. or any knock-off shoe.
And bags.
