Okay, I guess I know where you're coming from... I also think that I've seen you link some better combos in your strings lately (lately, as in, vid that you'd put out in the last three-quarters of a year or so), but I can't remember precisely.

Anyway, some feedback/enouragement -- I thought your first string had pretty good length. I thought your Paradox Double-Leg-Overs and Toe Double Leg Overs were looking pretty good. Personally, I've always found the Paradox DLO's pretty difficult, and the Toe DLO's a little under-used and pretty styly looking, so, Nice Job!

There were some other things I liked or just thought looked pretty good... Atom Smasher, Step to Bubba Egg, variety in general...

Okay, so, maybe its not "Bob Riefer's Greatest Hits", but, you're looking pretty good. Keep at it, keep up the good work, and there'll be more good shred ahead, and better shred ahead.

ps - do more spins. how about consecutive spinning clippers, or spinning butterfly to spinning osis? or some drills, like spinning clip to gyro clip repeat? and hows-about a torque?

I dunno, maybe I was too hard on myself above. I just re-watched the vid and I like how it looked. Considering I've been working on staples recently, I think the point of the session was to do what I do and do it well / smoothly / with consistency / good form etc. And I think my form and flow looks pretty good. So, that's cool.

obsess much? ha ha

I thought that vid was great! Really liked how much you mix it up.

Some constructive criticism: It looks like you land flat-footed quite a bit. Try landing on the balls of your feet more, straighten the back, and for some reason it helps me with control if I slightly engage my abs through the entire string...don't know why, but it helps.

kicked with clavens at ymca last night. he's pretty darned good at hacky sack. got some really good pointers and just had fun kicking. fun chilling after too.

so, this year was a good one for footbag.. despite me not attending any events, I played with Caleb, Jake, Ian, Matt B., Tim (CT), Drew, Brian, David, Pete Bowler, others.. not a bad year at all.

urgh, the cold that was just starting to say hello when DC was here, and then was getting pretty bitchy while I was helping a buddy hang drywall on saturday, turned into a full blown knock down feels-like-I'm-dying cold as of yesterday. And now my vacation is over and I'm back at work.

Good news is that my one employee that is out on maternity leave starts working part time from home beginning today. So, my double work load is now back down to normal. Which is to say, it's 9:30 a.m. and I'm pretty much caught up for the week. Slow times won't last though.. mid-january begins my busy season. Oh well.

got on the scale this morning to see how fat I've become. I knew it would be bad, and it was. 215 pounds. Let's recap... over a year ago, I was 240.. got down to 197 at lowest.. maintained 200 for a year. And in 3-4 weeks of holiday bull shit, I'm back to 215. That's fucking crap. Then again, I figure that literally 5-10 pounds is just bloating from beers over the holidays. So I'll weigh in again in about 2 weeks to see what the real damage is. If it's about 5 pounds I'll step away from the ledge. ha ha.

Anyways, wife and I are both on our programs for the year. we're good about keeping a program going for the long term. The thing I need to change is that next year for the holidays, I don't want to have the weight gain. That's hard to do because every night is a special dinner followed by drinks... and every day is watching football and hanging with family. but it's 11 months away, so we can develop a plan by then. For now, sights are once again set on 200 pounds (really set on 195, but first things first). Goal is to hit that in time for beantown throwdown.

got materials list and pricing together for barn project. big project, expensive project, complicated project. But I think I can at least get to the point where I have an exercise room finished and heated by the time next winter comes. A real room, not a shred tent. Real, finished floor, insulated walls and ceiling, baseboard electric heat, real windows. That'll be cool.

my shred barn is your shred barn pete :-)

it's like that movie field of dreams.. except that it's a barn and that the people that will come once I build it aren't dead baseball players. so yeah, it's nothing like that movie. Except that quote "if you build it they will come"

today is day 60 of quitting smoking which is sort of a milestone I've been looking forward to. I rarely think about it at this point. I think I'm done done this time. so that's cool.

back on schedule with eating right / exercising etc. that feels good too. will be in good form again in no time. wife is really motivated too so i'm happy about that.

my wife's mother is having her 70th birthday party this weekend.. it has occurred to me recently that she's starting to get pretty old. she's still spunky, but now it officially getting up there in age. which makes me think that my folks aren't that much younger. scary.

well, good news is that at least 4 pounds worth of weight gain from holidays and quitting smoking is fictional and is gone already. I figured some portion was just water weight/bloating etc. Looks like 4 pounds is that number. Which leaves me 11 pounds to get back to my happy place.

To get moving in the right direction, I played 40 minutes of footbag last night. Was tough because I'm sick, but I did a good job. DC's pointers were helpful on some of the tricks I was working on so that's good. I also hit my first ever dragon stalls on my strong side. Kind of pointless all by themselves, but fun way to cool down. Did sole stalls too. Again, sort of pointless but fun. Most improvement was found in stepping set due to DC's pointers. Had a couple pop up to shoulder height.

afterwards, stretched, did pushups, situps etc. And that was that.

today, bored at work again. Researching air compressors and barn materials still.

yesterday, seriously researched moving my blog out of modified because i'm just so tired of the scene here. but I couldn't find anything I liked right now, so I'm here still for now. but, for the record, modified ain't what it used to be in my opinion.

Now that you are back to posting separate posts, I feel like I can post in here again without "blowing your cover."

Re: moving your blog.

Maybe you can ask Erik Chan to give you space on Hackrifice.com.

On one hand I agree with you that modified has become a less pleasant place, but at the same time I feel like if all the good people leave (you, Hackrifice, etc) then that's like handing the keys over to the assholes. It reminds me of when a neighborhood starts turning bad... do you stay and try and make it better, or do you move to another neighborhood and give up on your old one?

One thing that made me feel better about modified was attending a bunch of tournaments this year. Not only did that help put modified in perspective by enabling me to compare it versus the actual footbag community (which is much nicer), but it also made me feel better knowing that the real footbag community shares a similar view about modified. It was comforting to hear people in Chicago make jokes about the biggest assholes on modifed, and realize that everybody else knows they are assholes too.

I'd like to come up and visit you sometime, maybe when the weather gets nice in Spring. Failing that, I plan on going to the Boston jam, so hopefully see you sometime in the next 5 months.

we'll see about moving the blog.. on one hand, having it here where it will actually be read makes sense since a portion of the blogging pertains to footbag, and only this group of people will care. Also, I'd suspect that blogs on the other sites are not being read. So the question is: Do I care if anyone reads? If no, I can just blog in a word doc on my computer. But whatever, I'm just being a drama mama probably and should just suck it up and blog here since view count indicates that some people must be reading. and I do get occasional pointers and encouragement, so that's worthwhile. blah blah blah.

kicked last night, but not really. I knew ahead of time that I was way too tired to really play. So I just effed around a bit with gyro clippers and blurs and called it a night.

Btw, I now weight 210. So at least 5 full pounds of my "oh my god I'm a huge fat ass" panic were simply holiday bloating. Losing 10 "quitting smoking" pounds is much more what I'd expect based on all my research, and I think it's totally doable in quick fashion. So that's good news.

picked out an air compressor and nail gun set. will be making the purchase this week. Framing nailer is really important to make the barn renovation possible. And the other nailers that I'm buying will be used in my business that I want to start. Compressors have all sorts of other uses took, so I'm really looking forward to this purhcase.

As each day passes, I realize that I'm closer to starting the barn renovation... and I get a little nervous. This is serious shit. I'm jacking up a building, ripping away supports, attempting to level/straighten the building, digging new foundation, putting in new supports, framing walls, running electric...... and more. Yikes. This is definitely more serious than anything I've done previously.. and if I fuck up, a barn could fall over.

you know what it is? it's that all the people I want to hear from and converse with are nice. And nice people have a hard time just telling idiots and assholes to shut the fuck up and leave. So the idiots and assholes eventually rule the roost. I mean, we all have the same list of people that need to get the hell out of here so we can have FUN and talk about our silly sport... but we're all too nice to actually do anything about it. Why do we have to be so democratic in this case? Just ban the assholes and call it a day. Won't ever happen.. "We're a free country" waaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh.. Shut up, ban 'em. Done. Problem solved. But, won't happen, therefore, I don't post anywhere besides my own blog. And I don't even read anything besides blogs anymore. Not even vids section. Nothing. Not worth it.

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, it's friiiiiidaaaaaaaay. 8) twas a pretty good week after a rough start. cold disappeared quickly, played footbag 3 out of 4 nights so far, made good progress on barn planning, all caught up at work (and one of my employees is back part time from maternity leave), and here it is friday already.

Plus, I'm down to 209 already. So fiction weight again amazes me. I can see how seriously overweight people can get caught in a psychological cycle - weight is so maddening.. a year to take it off, 3 weeks to add it on... and the number is never "true".. they say that all that matters is how your clothes fits... but that's too subjective because clothes can still fit, and you look shitty/fat. I think that's why people use the scale.. it's objective. but it's such a fake number. I mean, 6 pounds lost in 4-5 days? that's not a "real" 6 pounds. whatever, I'm back on my health kick and going full steam, and quitting smoking is not bothering me at all anymore, so it's all good and will work out.

footbag was kinda shitty last night. but i was able to remind myself that tired legs, winter blues, freezing barn does not mean that I suddenly suck at footbag. So I got some good practice in, kept a good attitude, did some pushups and situps, and called it a night.

had a really nice weekend. uneventful but nice overall.

friday night, chilling. I can't even remember actually. I think I was scanning vintage photos and posting them to embarass old friends.

saturday morning chilling. afternoon footbag session. after kids were in bed, out with wife to mother in law's 70th birthday party at an irish pub. that was fun.

sunday morning chilling. late morning, bought 6 huge, brand new, lifetime warranty, energy star windows for $50 apiece. Guy was going out of business. That's a HUGE budget saver on the barn project.. the same windows can be purchased at Home Depot for $175 apiece. Big win. Then, bigger win when Eagles and Steelers both advanced to conference championship rounds.

I'm switching to basketball until it gets a little warmer. I don't enjoy practicing at the YMCA (I like shredding with others there, but practice is ideally a private thing in my opinion) and it's so cold in the barn even with the heater running. When it gets back up into the 30's I'll start kicking again.

Also, the winter blues are really upon me now. It happens every year, so at least it doesn't blind side me at this stage (I used to get so bummed and never knew what was wrong.. that was always confusing. now I know so it's easier to deal with). But playing a frustrating sport in cold weather while you're tired and grumpy isn't a recipe for success.

That said, I think I'm shredding with Brian at the Y on saturday, so that will be fun.

what a good weekend so far.

last night, nice night with the kids. then i went to ymca to play hoops (again, barn is too cold to footbag in there right now). my neighbor ended up being there, so we shot hoops together, played some 2 on 2, and I left nice and exhausted.

then went home, hung out with the wife and chilled and had a couple beers. just a nice pleasant time with megan.

then meg let me sleep in this morning. i woke up to coffee already brewed, and just played with the kids and had some breakfast. Then, went to home depot and got lumber, and my compressor, and a bunch of other tools I've really needed for a long time. took about 2 hours to shop and drive, but it was worth it. the right tool for the job, and good materials = good way to have the project start on the right foot.

got home, quickly changed, and went right back out to play footbag with brian. i shredded really well. it felt so good. in such control, long runs, working in the stuff I've been working on, incorporating DC's pointers, chilling between runs, telling people about footbag.. just one of those nights when it was like "yeahhhhhh, this is why I play". 8) I hope that was as inspiring to read as it was to write. 8)

came home, quickly ate some dinner, and then packed up the kids to head right back to the ymca to take them swimming. meg and i grudgingly got into our swim suits (the holiday pounds still in our heads) and had a ton of fun swimming. Emi is in a real daddy phase right now, so she was all about me. Eventually, I tricked her into hanging with meg so I could work with keegan (i taught swimming lessons for 7+ years back in the day). Keegs loves the water, but has thus far been very wary and cautious. Tonight was a breakthrough night based on weeks of building confidence in the bathtub. He was dunking his face in the water, jumping off the edge of the pool into my arms, and put his whole head under once. Tuckered the kids out, and ourselves too, and brought them home for bed time.

Unpacked all the lumber from the truck, organized it all in the barn, sipping a few beers with meg. Looking forward to eagles game tomorrow.

g'night

so i haven't played a full court game of 5 on 5 basketball for months. i was playing for awhile about a year ago, but i was also a smoker at that point, and was also 40 pounds over weight. though i'm 32, i felt about 42. i thought maybe that was what being 32 felt like.

well, i haven't smoked in just about 3 months, and i'm not 40 pounds overweight anymore. so tonight i played 5 on 5 at the ymca.

my ymca is not a set of bullshit games. tonight, the one team had a guy that started 3 years for lafayette (graduated 1997, but still) and another guy that played D2 and is about 6'7" tall.

If it wasn't for the blisters on my feet, I could have played all night. I was getting steals and leading the break, rebounding like a maniac, making passes like the point guard I used to be, hitting jumpers, cutting and finishing. I felt 25 years old.

gotta let my feet heal for a few days, and i'll be back in the hoops groove. wow, i'm never starting smoking again.

and i think this will be good for footbag ultimately.

--
barn project is giving me stress hives. figured out a lot recently. this is a big deal. let me stress this: I'm picking up a building, pulling it into square, and levelling it. I could knock over a 2 story building that's about the same size as my house. hence the stress hives.
