over the time of the comp for nationals I didn't really get too rowdy or loose at the moose, considering I had things to organise and no money blah blah blah.

Holy shit did I make up for that last night!

haven't posted in this in a fair while. I guess I have been playing footbag a fair bit. I don't really work that much, so I have a lot of free time, I am currently trying to change that though, I have had a few interviews this week for full time jobs. There's one I'm really hanging out for at the moment, a job in the Youth Hostel in Civic, mainly doing reception and stuff, but also organising activities for the backpackers, I think it would be really fun, and also something I'd be fairly good at.

I have also started going to the gym, as well as keeping a fitness diary. The fitness diary is probably one of the best things I have done, as I can look at the week and see that I need to make up for a lack of activity....and also, since my gym membership costs a fair bit, I try to go 3-4 times a week. I have been doing quite a lot of exercise lately, not all that much else. I think I am becoming quite agrophobic so most of the time I just stay at home.

I am going to game three of the state of origin (rugby league) series between New South Wales and Queensland. It is tied at 1-1, and hopefully NSW don't name as hopeless a side as last time, then it should be a good game. That is pretty exciting, I love rugby league.

oh yeah, footbag....I have hit a few new tricks....I have been working on a lot of atomic tricks, and have hit a few good ones like symp tap, frontside legbeater...some other ones. I haven't really been keeping track very well. All I really keep track of is the times I play really badly, which significantly outweigh the times I am happy with my game.

So yet another year, and I am completely unable to save any money. If I get myself one of these full time jobs, I would like to spend a full year travelling the world, just going to footbag competitions and stuff...that would be pretty good.

These are the main albums I've been listening to lately

AFI- Answer That And Stay Fashionable
Anthrax- We've Come For You All
Parkway Drive- Horizons
Mae- The Everglow
Radio Birdman- Radios Appear

and some other stuff.

Yesterday I finally hit ripwalk>sidewalk rpt. That is something I've been trying for a long time and it was quite satisfying to finally hit it.

I've been playing indoor soccer in a social competition with some friends from uni. We get flogged every week. Yesterday we played two matches, and in the whole time only scored one goal. Not particularly good.

Today I tried a "Body Step" class at the gym. I'm not sure if I've ever felt more unco-ordinated in my life!

So I have dug into the archives and found my blog which I haven't written in for quite some time.

I have been playing a bit lately. In my last post I read something saying "if only I had a full time job". Well now I do, I'm working for the YHA (youth hostel) in the city here in Canberra. Most days I work 7-3. This means most days I am up quite early, and when you're up before dark in Canberra, it is really incredibly cold.

However, winter is finished now (technically, I still forsee some more cold to come) and some nice days are starting to come through. Today is AFL grand final today. Here in Canberra no one cares all that much about AFL, however last year I lived in Melbourne, and I lived in Geelong and then in Hawthorn, which just so happen to be the two teams in the grand final. When we were living in Geelong it wasn't actually my house or anything, so I didn't pick up on the hype of the Cats, though they went on to win the premiership. As time went on and I was constantly asked "what team do you go for??????" and found that the CANBERRA RAIDERS wasn't an acceptable answer, I decided Hawthorn would be the team for me.

It's into the last quarter now, and they're looking pretty good, 97-76. I'm definitely regretting not putting a bet on this game, that would have increased my funds!

Next week I am going to the NRL (rugby league) grand final. I'm pretty excited about that. My team (Canberra Raiders) bombed out early in the finals series, as they had 13 players unavailable (that's a whole team worth). The team that beat them played last night, and played so incredibly badly, it was a bit rough to watch, as I thought they would win.

Back to footbag, over the winter, my two footbag buddies Caroline and Copey went to worlds, so it was just me by myself. I really struggled to get the motivation to play in the sub-zero temps so a lot of the time didn't bother. Caroline is back now, but she has some problems with her shins, but we have been playing a little bit.

The other day I finally hit smog for the first time, and nearly enterrage, both of these tricks I have been trying for so many years it's not even funny.

There's a comp coming up in Newtown in Sydney that I've been planning a routine for. Hopefully I can get it to be really good, and do a 1-2 drop routine.

It's been quite a while since my last update. Been playing in bits and pieces lately.

Yesterday I hit food processor. That was my first 6 add trick. Last week I hit enterrage, something I have been trying to hit for far too long.

I was planning on doing a big update, but I just really couldn't be bothered.

I don't really post in this blog very much. I think that is something I would like to change.

Anyway, it's new years eve, and I'm sitting here at work. It's not that fun. I finish in one hour (11pm), then it is time to party, I'm pretty tired though. However, I don't have to work until afternoon tomorrow, so that's pretty sweet.

I work at a backpackers in the city in Canberra. As well as NYE there is a car festival, summernats starting tomorrow, so there's some "characters" around. People always say to me that it must be the best job in the world because I get to meet all the backpacker babes. More often than not you get people who complain a lot instead. And they are not babes.

Anyway, I should probably talk about footbag. I haven't been playing heaps lately, but last time I played I had ripped warrior and whirling swirl come off my foot. Those are definitely two tricks I never thought I'd hit in my entire life...so hopefully in a few months I will have them down. I really need to work on becoming more bothsided. I am definitely getting better though, I recently hit flip blender and pdx whirl, my flip whirls used to be very bad, now they're just not very good.

So, the year in Footbag, it was a reasonable year overall. I really enjoyed the Narooma jam at the start of the year, it was probably my favourite event I've been to so far. Nationals I probably didn't enjoy so much, but I was really pleased with my routine, and my second place in said event. That was really the first major tournament I've organised and it could've been done a lot better, but it's all part of the learning experience.

That time of year I had been playing A LOT, and I was improving really rapidly, not too far after that I started working two jobs, and things were a bit more hectic. I also had a bit of a footbag hangover, as I like to call it, and I just wasn't that motivated.

We had a little jam up in Sydney a little while back, practicing in the lead up to that got me back into the game a lot more. I wasn't so pleased with my routine at that event, it wasn't such a serious comp, but I was really hoping to pull off a low drop routine, but I simply hadn't practiced enough. No big deal.

I am really excited for Footbag in Australia in 2009. The next month will be sweet. On the weekend I am going to head up to Sydney and shred with Flavio, it's cool to have quite a number of international footbag players here in Australia. I think he will come to Canberra at some stage too. We have Narooma on the Australia Day long weekend, and more importantly I have a week off (paid annual leave, yeaaah.) Andrew Grant and I are going to do a surf trip down the south coast. That's my part of the world, it's really not such a tourist-y destination, but it is very beautiful all the same, just less crowded.

I am planning to go to the Mogo Zoo, where we can see the white lions. I went there on an excursion in Year 8. We also went to Montague Island, hopefully we will get there this time at the Narooma Jam. I remember not enjoying that camp all that much, but in reality it was sweet as. We went to the zoo, went out to the island to see seals and penguins and did lots of other fun stuff. We also listened to Slayer in the bus on the way home.

The dude that put the Slayer tape on added me on facebook the other day, he is a complete nutcase. I mentioned footbag and he said he is banned by court order from playing hack because he was playing some form of "extreme hack"...with knives. And cut up his feet and stuff. He was on of 3 people in my year in year 12 to go to a mental institution.

Anyway, this is really long, but that was a good way to pass by the last hour of my shift, only 20 minutes to go now.

I forgot to add more footbag things to be excited about: Nationals will be at the Sydney Easter Show, which will be a huge event, and I am definitely planning on being at worlds, I am hoping in the next 3 fortnights to be able to by my ticket, and to go to Germany for a month in total, include going to Wacken open Air, the biggest heavy metal festival in the world, after the worlds.

I think 2009 will be good. I certainly hope so.

So in my last post I was saying I was hoping to hit whirling swirl and ripped warrior sometime in the year. So one week in, I have hit them both, only on one side though, but still pretty stoked.

I went to Sydney on the weekend and kicked with Flavio, Ian and Ben Lynn. It was pretty sweet, I had a really enjoyable session and a generally relaxed time in Sydney. Definitely beat being in Canberra during summernats.

Just today I had a kick with Caroline, I had eaten a bit before we kicked, which was really stupid. But I hit ripped warrior for the first time, so pretty stoked with that. Was getting some nice long runs also. Up in Sydney I hit something like phoenix>torque>ducking clipper>blender into some more stuff, I was pretty pleased with that.

Only a couple of weeks til the Narooma Jam, so excited about that, and taking time off work. Sweeeeeeetttt.

2009 has started well, I will say after the first week. I am enjoying it so far.

I had a kick just before. It's sweltering hot outside, so I didn't stay out for too long.

In that time I hit

enterrage
vortex
19 ducking clippers (new PB)

Over the last weekend I had Flavio and Andreas here, we had a really sweet time. My friends had a housewarming, and we all ended up in some form of strange cricket match at 2am.

On the last evening we had a really nice BBQ, very tasty. On the first day Flavio was here, we kicked with Caroline then later with Copey. Just after Caroline left I hit spinning far rev swirl. By the time Copey arrived I had had quite a few beers, so didn't really get to hit much.

But it was a really sweet weekend.

Only just over a week until Narooma, and a week off work. Stoked. I am applying for a "duty manager" position at my work. Not sure if it is a good idea, less sure if I would get it....however, it's always worth giving it a go.

So next week I have 7 working days off, pretty excited about that.

On Thursday evening I will catch the bus down to my parents house, then the next morning drive up to Narooma to meet up with everyone else for the jam. Last year's Narooma jam was definitely a highlight of the year. It is such a beautiful place.

Image

There's a picture of me in action during last year.

So hopefully this time around we are able to get out to Montague Island. It is this Island of the coast of Narooma with a lighthouse, there are also seals and penguins there.

Image

After the jam which will last the whole Australia Day weekend, I still have another week off work. Andrew Grant and I are going to hang around the south coast, and I'm very excited about that.

My Dad has taken the day after Australia Day off, so we will head down to Bega first, after that we will head north for Wed, Thu, Fri...stay somewhere around the Ulladulla region.

I am hoping to climb up Pigeon House mountain when we are there

Image

Apart from that, we will just hang at the beach and hopefully get some excellent waves. That would be just swell.

I've been meaning to update this for a while, now that I'm back from my little adventure.

This year's Narooma Jam was really sweet. I arrived on the Friday, I was staying at the YHA (free of charge). The night before I stayed at my parents place. I borrowed Dad's car for the week and headed up for "the oom". I was a bit too early to check in, so I went to the beach. I went in at Dalmeny. There was nobody out in the surf, but quite a lot of people on the beach, so I didn't think it was too dangerous. The tide was quite high, which made the waves hard to catch.

I checked into the hostel after that. There were these guys there, the night before the bus was meant to stop for them outside the hostel, however the person at the bus company forgot to write this on the list, so the bus kept powering along. The guys told me they had this big adventure trying to chase the bus through the countryside at 2am with the manager of the hostel.

I showed them a few things in Narooma, here is a photo of us. I really can't remember either of their names.

Image

When we were at this lookout, this guy was all like "check down on the rocks, there's a sea lion there"

Image

After that little adventure we went to check out this beach on the other side of town, near the cemetery. When we were coming back we passed these girls who were also staying at the hostel. So we gave them a lift back to the hostel and I asked if they wanted to come down to the beach I was going to.

After this we went to meet up with Copey, Jeremy, Olly and Leon down at the beach. Copey always likes to go to Bar Beach, which is in the inlet. It's near to where all the boats come in from the sea, I think the water tastes somewhat of diesel, and would prefer to swim in the ocean beaches.

Dinner on this night was at the pub. I thought the prices were to expensive for just a standard pub meal but everybody else looked at me like some kind of cheapskate...which is true. I had Chicken Kiev or something, it was reasonable. Caroline bought all these tickets in the meat raffle, unfortunately she didn't win a thing.

We went to the beach for some cricket after this. Jeremy was in bat first and plundered some pathetic bowling out into the creek. I had a few turns in bat and managed to hit a couple down into the creek so i was pleased with that.

Image

The most important part of the game was drinking beer between every bowl, every hit, every movement really. After the game we went to Nathan's place. I got a lift back into town with Ian and Kayleigh and went to sleep in this stupidly creaky bed, which kept me up most of the night.

Next morning I was up early. I got in the water at the beach near where we stayed last year. I quite enjoyed this, I got some really long rides on the bodyboard. Threw a lot of spray around on some cutbacks. I went to the caravan park where Ian and Kayleigh were staying, then we went for a swim in the river. Just as we were about to go in the water I got a text saying "kick at the wharf in half an hour" and I thought "in this heat????"

We went down to the wharf for a kick, and it was very hot, and very windy. I was really struggling in the windy conditions. There were all these guys jumping of the wharf, so after a while I decided I would just jump in too. I went straight back into playing a felt quite a lot cooler.
Image

After a while we went in search of somewhere less windy, and we ended up at the skatepark.
Image

I spent a fair bit of time in my rollerblading days coming up from Bega to skate the park, so it brought back a few memories. I started playing reasonably well for a while.... it was a while ago now so I don't remember any particular highlights, but I had some really long runs.

Image

After the session was over, everyone split up a bit. Andrew and I headed off for some waves. I wasn't really sure about Andrew's experience or anything, so deciding to go in off the rocks may not have been such a good idea. Anyhow, we got out into the break quite easily, after having a little trouble navigating the rocks.

I was feeling good on this day, getting some really steep, fast waves. Unfortunately for Andrew I only had one spare flipper for him, so it was quite hard work. That was made all the more harder when his armrope broke. I paddled quickly across to retrieve his board, but it was too dangerous to stay out the back after this, so we paddle around in the shallows.

Eventually we joined up with everyone else, they were fishing.

Image

Fishing is really something I have an incredible lack of interest in, I have to say. Over the time most people caught some fish, which a high improvement on last year's total of zero.

Next stop was the bowls club in Dalmeny. I was driving, so unforunately I couldn't enjoy bowls the way it's meant to be done, with beer in hand. Early on I was playing on a team with Jeremy vs Copey and Andrew. I started abysmally, but on one end I smashed the ball into the gutter, then had the next two closest balls, giving me 3 for that match. In that game Benoite took over my place and I teamed up with Caroline against the Melbourne blokes for a humiliating loss for the ACT team (maybe 21-9 or something). Jeremy and Benoite built up a huge lead, but were nearly overtaken in a big comeback.
Image

We had dinner at the club, then headed out to O'Briens "Million Dollar View" Pub. We stayed there til close, just talking shit really. I walked back towards the hostel with Nathan's friend Circe, who accompanied us last year on our journey to Dobbo's place.

On the Sunday I hired a kayak while Ian and Kayleigh had a snorkel at the same place we went for a swim the day before. For some reason I had my phone in my pocket in the kayak, so it got water inside and was not much good anymore after that. Everyone was keen to fish after this. I sat and read a book....Love In The Time of Cholera it was.

After a swim, the plaza was chosen as the spot to kick. Last year there was this giant boat they were raffling off taking half the spot up, so I was glad to see that gone. I started playing quite well, I had a run starting with phoenix>blurry whirl, and did some more good long runs, however after a while I tired. That is something I need to work on to be a better player, building my stamina.

Australia Day was the next day, we were lucky enough to get out to Montague Island on the National Parks boat for free. I was also lucky not to miss the boat after stuffing around for far too long and being late to Copey's place. Unfortunately the season was wrong for penguins, so we didn't see any of them.

There were only a few of us left after the boat trip, so we had a BBQ. What better way to celebrate Australia Day than drinking beer and eating meat.

Image

We went down to the beach later on and had a sweet game of four square with a soccerball. Before we begun I hit DATW with the soccer ball. Unfortunately for me, early in the trip, the top of both feet got badly sunburnt, so every kick was painful, and I had to retire hurt early in the second match. Copey showed his prowess, and why he is the national champ of four square in the match. Home ground advantage may have helped as well.

After this everyone talked of things like "going back to work", however there was still another week of adventuring left for Andrew Grant and I. I will write about this another time.

Thanks for checking out my blog.

I am definitely going to worlds, hope to meet you there.

Cool that you are doing zines. Can we get a peek?

I did a zine with drawings and photos last year but never really got it printed.

If you want a drawing to put in your zine let me know.

Props for grifter. One of my favorite footbag tricks.

I haven't done a zine for a while, I wasn't so happy with how they were turning out, as my artistic talent is on the opposite end of the spectrum to yours (very low!). I have a blog with some of the interviews and things at capital-eyes.blogspot.com

However, I am planning on doing a footbag zine at some stage. This is an idea I have had for quite some time, and I think this year I will be able to bring it to fruition.

I will be booking my tickets for worlds in the next fortnight. I am pretty excited, I've never been overseas before.
