Stouffer's Footbag Adventure

Post by HippieTom »

Alright so after nearing a year in footbag, i figure its about time i started a footblog as a journal to help motivate me and organize my thoughts.

First off if any one is interested my name is Stephen Thomas Stouffer, i go by Tom and im 17 years old. I live in Indianapolis, IN and up to this point i know of only two other footbagers in the state, one through modified the other i met on monday at NYJ this year.

So i started playing footbag like most, by hacking at lunch in school, eventually some kid showed me how to do atw and pendulum so me being the competitive person i am i ventured forth into the fantastic and sometimes frightening world of google, search for hacky sack tricks i came upon a video of penske doing infinities and was amazed, so i eventually ordered a Mr after joining modified in april 2008.(i actually started trying to string tricks in february last year). i practiced and practiced and eventually did the smart thing and bought a pair of lavers. and its been off and on playing since, i picked up stitching over the summer but to this day ive only made around 14 32panels and 15 or so 4 panels, very few having any good gather or stitch consistency.

i play mostly with my bags, footfighters or the kalishnokov bag i got from Sergey.

Tricks:(just for my own reminder what i can hit and need to drill)
kicks: high of 110 my kicks are slowly getting better
Atw:IN and Out: bsos
mirage:bsos
clipper:bsos
illusion:bsos
legover:bsos
pickup:bsos
ssmirage:bsos
ssillusion:bsos
butterfly: bsos
Infinity:bsos
osis:bsos
Pdx. mirage: bsos
Whirl:bs
ducking clipper:strong side
plo: strong side
pendulum:kinda sucky but bs
symposium mirage: bsos
flail: bsos
clipper set ss mirage:bsos
bubba:bs
clip set op pickup:bsos
clip set op legover:bsos
and thats basicaly it, right now im mainly concerned with drilling the basics 100 of each bs each day or so with breaks every 3 days or so
my string length sucks and its the most sucky part of my game, im kind of ashamed of it really

well since ive only spoken to a few of you and only met 2 or 3 ill give a little more backround information
i play guitar in an alt rock band called The Adjective Happens, we play music most akin to our hometown heroes Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, i like most music not a lot of country but most everything else i can stand, i love hiking and backpacking and climbing that sort of outdoor stuff and since this post is kinda long im gonna end here haha

Come to Chicago and hang out more.

day 2 of footblog-

So pretty much ive been doing nothing but drilling the basics today, except i drilled bops as well

300b2b clippers (anz drill style, drop if close still counts and you keep counting) the 200 is counting the 100 used in the osis drills& pdx mirage drills
100 mirages 50 ss 50 fs
100 illusions 50ss 50fs
100 butterflies same as above
100 b2b legovers
100 b2b pickups
100 b2b osii
100 pdx mirage

so thats basically it, ive also really found that everyones advice on warming up and down with stretches is fantastic!
:D

im so excited for this, seriously i can already feel my strings getting longer and tricks getting tighter

on a different note i've been stitching a lot lately, its really nice an relaxing. i took my kit to school most days this week and stitched during my free time it was great! i even got a couple orders!

real quick cool story (well for me anyway)
so i was just hacking around at lunch, trying not to do anything fancy like clippers or tricks of any sort (i made that mistake once and while my strings are pitiful in the footbag world, to average hackers its insane, it resulted in the circle centering around me and i felt bad) but anyways... so i was just playing it cool and hacking, when this kid comes up and joins in, so somehow the subject of handstand tricks came up, so i mentioned mosher's tail and so this new kid, i dont know him at all, heard the name tom and was like is that the crazy kid whos like insane with the hack? and seeing as im the only hacker in the school named tom it was neat, yet at the same time i find myself really kinda down about being the only one who plays footbag, it sucks because even with my barely tiltless strings its still better than anyone around so i end up feeling guilty of showing off or something when im really playing crappy, ive tried everything i can think of to promote it and recruit some players but all they say is oh thats neat, so i end up feeling lonely in my footbag pursuits.. oh well enough of my whining

well have to take the SAT tomorrow, probably gonna take my kit and stitch in between sections
good night all
Tom

Day 3-

Test day, woohoo, what a great way to start a day huh? sat yeah, so i wake up early, im excited im gonna go take a test to show my brains! woohoo 5 hours and colleges nationwide shall know without a doubt exactly how smart i am! ...not, so i woke up excited (thats the truth!) because i was gonna go take the test and stitch inbetween sections, which i did,so i get out to the test center at 7 am to find we cant get in until 7:45, funky buttlovin battman i say to the empty seat next to me in my big van. So what do i do i sit there listenen to tunes until test time.
Test time
So i enter the test center not too unhappy but slightly, i have my handy dandy pencils and calculator, my stitching kit, a book and a pellow; i was ready for anything. First up the essay, no problem, then comes the crappy mix of easy language comp and useless math. In between sections im stitching like a mad man, i get a good 3rd of a bag done during the test day in total. It was kind of fun actually, i got to explain to the proctor all about stitching and footbag so that was cool. Other than that the test blew it was boring and easy and just a waste of a morning in generaly but whatever.

Footbag-
i managed to play a little today but tried to stay away from schooling anything too hard, im a little sore from drilling and lack of sleep so i figured id go easy on my body.
Lately ive really started to hate my game, i can barely string 10 contacts with bails to toe mixed in! its really bad! really really pitiful! so i school and school and drill. but not today, today i just freestyle and what do you know a high of 15 tiltless and a string with all bops mixed in.

Oh well, i guess i just have to school harder. If anyone has any tips on how to drill each session or easier challenges id gladly give em a shot!

Thanks for reading!

Glad the test went well Tom! Did you get to spread the stitching to others? Any new stitchers we should be ready to buy bags from?

only the proctor showed any interest, but she was like 60 so i doubt she shall sell any or really even make em but hey it was good exposure. the bag i started is gonna be sweet though it seems my stitching is improving! im kinda bummed this bag is an order though haha but at least its for a local hacker so ill get to see it often and check in on how its playin! thanks for the comments Corey!

This isn't related to your footbag development/training, but where do you want to go to school? If you'd rather PM me and not waste blogspace, that's fine too.

so i have not posted for a couple o days so here it goes,
Sunday- right so i played a little on sunday nothin special not really a full session

Monday- played even less then sunday basically a few clippers osii and a few others here and there
stayed after school to work on an experiment for my Psych class, me and my two partners are attempting to condition an albino adolescent rat to press a lever in response to a stimulus and descriminate between the first stimulus and another, basicall we want it to press a lever in response to one stimulus and not when the other stimulus is present. So we decided to use the scent of vanilla and the song ice ice baby as our two stimuli. We want the rat to press the lever when the vanilla scent is present and not when he hears ice ice baby. We call it the Vanilla Ice Experiment, hahaahahaaha what a cheesy title but its cool because we get to title our write ups that. So anyways i stayed after to try to work with the rat, seriously we have had this thing for about 2 weeks and its doing alright but its really really slow. It understands that it gets food if it presses the lever but it doesnt really care. So i stayed after using my strange Jedi affinity for small rodents in attempt to push it along. So i got about 128 lever presses in an hour (pititful really) but the good part is i got him on a varying ratio of presses (meaning he never knows how many times to press to get food so he keeps pressing) and so he only received 52 pieces of food which made me pretty proud of the little bugger.
then later that day i got together with one of my new band-mates (i recently joined a local alternative band called The Adjective Happens) to learn the rest of their songs having learned the majority last week. It went great and i was super excited. i went home and slept not really ready for another day at school but not bothered too much.

Tuesday-
No footbag today just school and band stuff. School this year is strange im not entirely sure whether i hate it and senioritis has set in early or if i love it. Since we are on block sceduling i know i like red days(the day it is today) and so i was cool with school as it were.
I go to school work on some cool stuff in my 3d art class, finished up a chewbacca mask out of clay life size too, and hacked a little at lunch but in all honesty i try to avoid it because as fun as it is to bust out clippers osii and whirls in a hack circle its really depressing when people stop wanting to play and only want to watch you,Especially when you are a novice like me and know that you really really stink (string length wise at least) so i just kind of lazed my way through the day. 2nd period was cool though, we watched the bbc version of a couple blue planet episodes so it had that really awesome narrator with the super official voice.
At last last period arrives, the class ive waited 2 years to take, Psychology. So we continue to work with the rat and low and behold whatever i did with him worked, he attacks the lever with a vigor we had yet to observe! His count rose quickly to 100 presses (only 20 minutes or so) and we finally started descrimination training, alternating between periods of time, equivilent to the length of ice ice baby, when one stimulus would be presented at a time, first off the one he was familiar with, the vanilla scent. Then after 4 minutes or so we would switch to the song ice ice baby removing the vanilla and removing the reinforcer(food). Afterwards we would return to the scent and the food at a random variable between 1 and 7 of presses for food. it went wonderfully! SUCCESS! unfortunately we were released 15 minutes early due to snow and so we had to cut our work short for the day.
So i drive home in my 92 Chevy Astro van trying my best to avoid all the newb winter drivers who cant handly their fancy 4 wheel drive monstrocities half as well as i can handle my ancient back wheel drive van.(not hubris simply the truth)
after a quick but terse conversation between my parents and me it was decided that i was allowed to go to band practice even given the excess amount of snow we were currently being bombarded with. so i go we eat some wendys then run through the songs, its wonderful. then i once again venture out into the strange and wonderous tundra my town had become and go home to sleep.
Wednesday-
I wake up frantic, i overslept. so i rush downstairs bumping into my mom who broke the wonderful news to me, snow day. Fantastic! I can finally get that session ive been longing for in! so i go shovel some snow to help the family escape to work, my dad being the only lucky one able to make it to work the others getting stuck on the road and forced to return to the house.
I watch some shred vids, Anz, Jay, Jorden and Dave are beasts for sure. Then i lace up the trusty lavers and get to it, school school school on a snow day, kind of ironic in its own way.
so i repeat the basics drills that i posted the other day basically just 100 alternating tricks (50 each side basically, im gunna bump it up to 100 soon) and 50 non alternating ones (mirage, illusion, pdx mirage etc.) each side
i start to try to school whirls only to stop halfway through due to knee pain in my flipside support leg, I think i just need to take flip whirls slow.
so all in all im feelin good i eat some food and go back to playing, pure shred now, i think my longest string was 21 tiltless(my best yet)!
:D

well now were all caught up!
new tricks/links:
legovers and illusions ending in inside stalls instead of toe, inspired by jake wren from that oregon raw video posted way back. frkkn sweet looking
osis>reverse walkover
cool stuff nothing really all that special but im feeling alright i got a few strings of 15+ tiltless which is big for me, i really hate how terrible i am at stringing tricks, hopefully this schooling helps

well thats a wrap, off to bed, another snow day tomorrow has already been announced so im super stoked to shred some more tomorrow!
Night modified and thanks to anyone who bothers to read this much!

right so another weekend down, not too much footbag unfortunately but just too darn busy for my own good haha

so the only real accomplishment footbagwise is datw strongside, fun trick im not sure if im doing it right though im kinda doing, at least in my head i think of it as, a pixie atw but it looks like datw so im not sure if there is a difference or if im just dumb, either way its a fun trick

um im waiting on some lead i bought from jake raye im really excited for it, kinda anxious, because i have six or so unfilled bags lying around i want to fill, one of them is an order so i feel kinda akward stalling the dude until i get the filler but oh well haha maybe it will arrive tomorrow?

I was inducted into National Honors Society today and it kinda made me reflect on what ive been doing academically and in the community service/ Boy Scout area(i know weird connection neh?). it seems to me that i dont really feel like ive done my best in school i know i could have worked harder and could still but no matter how much i tell myself i need to when the moment arrives i just blow my work off, its frustrating. and in scouts ive been sitting one requirement away from eagle for 2+ years now but because of my lazyness and my troops lack of support ive wasted all this time and now im on the clock to get it done before i turn 18, but whatever enough self pity.

So as far as footbag goes, im pretty happy with how my game is progressing im not quite as strong as i would like but im enjoying looking back on where i was only a year ago and saying dang, i cant believe how easy those tricks seem now, but at the same time i have these days when even basic tiltless tricks mess me up so i think maybe my form needs improvement im still struggling to hit consistant 15+ tiltless strings i always end up bailing to toe stalls/inside stalls or dropping on easy tricks, and this is with schooling basics every session or so. i think my playing rhythm is just kinda wack but maybe its just a bad day who knows?

right well thats enough for now, thanks for reading maybe next time ill have some highlights or something.

-Stouffer out!

Edit- P.S. if anyone has any good basic drills or even bop drills send em my way if you feel like it! thanks!
