got the barn project started. well, i got the clearing the barn out phase started at least. step by step, deliberate. we'll get 'er done. looks like getting the building level and plumb will cost about $1000, which includes several tools that I'll own forever. So, very cost effective. But it's taken tons of work to figure out best way to do it. And lots of borrowing of other tools.
after building is level/plumb, looks like it will cost $4000 to have new concrete floor poured. Much higher than I anticipated. But I really don't want to learn that skill, and I want a perfect floor, so I'll have to figure out a way to pay it.
lots of people having health stuff lately. My mom successfully beat uteran cancer recently. My sister is having a benign tumor removed from the top of her spinal chord, which is scary and could cause major problems. My dad just had a hernia operation. And then today a close friend of mine called to tell me he has melanoma cancer. Stage 3, high chance of not making it etc. His wife just had their second child about a month ago. Man, I hope he does ok. Surgery on wednesday, and if successful, he'll have blood tests every 3 months for life. kind of makes me sick to my stomach to think about.

I'm a weird sort of sick right now. I feel like crap, am coughing, blowing my nose, but I'm not totally shitty. So at least I'm not burning days off by staying home, and I was able to work on the barn a little last night.
So far, I'm still in the 'clearing out' phase. Actually, I've learned over the years that the more preparation you do, and the better the preparation, the easier the project. So I'll be prepping for awhile longer still.
Learned last night that 6 posts need repaired, and 2-3 additional posts need to be installed (previously felt that only 4 needed repaired and just 1 new one installed). So that was a bummer to learn. But, my knowledge is really growing quickly so I am still optimistic.
I also will have to attack drainage around the building as part of this whole thing. Water is our enemy when it comes to stuff like this (deja vu.. not long ago I was posting about water issues of many types at my main house... I've fixed all those already).
Figured out with my neighbor what I'm going to do with my stuff while the barn is opened up. Basically, as much as possible will be upstairs in the barn.. and the stairs will be ripped out, and I can padlock up there so that no one can get up there and steal anything. Tools that I'm using regularly will be stored in my truck so that they can be locked up. Larger tools that won't fit in the truck cab (like air compressor, table saw, mitre saw) will have to go in my living room each night, and be blocked off so kids can't get near them (a pain in the ass, but no other choice). Lawn mowers (etc.) will be stored at my neighbors garage around the corner.
This will allow me to pull the sheathing off the 1st story of the building without worrying about theft. And building will be wide open and easy to work in/around.
Boy o boy, this thing is starting to roll!
hopefully I'll be healthy again by tomorrow night because I want to play some hoops. Haven't done anything since the weekend. It's probably good actually because I was having all sorts of soreness in my legs and back from over-exercise. So a few days to heal is OK. Would like to start shredding again too, this weekends only stuff was fun for a few weeks, but I miss it. Warm weather is on the way soon enough.

it's mildly stressing me out that my footblog has nothing to do with footbag very recently. I mean, there's been a couple shred session highlights, but that's hardly as serious as I mean to be about the game. And it's stressing me out because I have to fix the barn so that I can have a shred room... and that takes time to do. And, the next step in the preparation is to take the shred heat tent apart because it's in my way right now. So I'll really have nowhere to practice. And hoops is something I need to do as well. And I wanted to be sharp for Boston jam.
But I think I just need to come to terms with the fact that I won't be practicing much from now until late spring. I'll practice when I can, shred when I can, and otherwise let footbag progress slow down for awhile. Sigh. it is what it is.
edit: damn it, I broke my own rule and went and read a little bit of the forum. No idea why, this forum has become such utter crap (thanks largely to just a few people as I've mentioned previously). Anyhow, "webslinger" comments in the Milan vid post.. Not sure if it's a language barrier or what, but I can't help but think "assssssssshole" at everything he writes. To all the "internet jerks", What's the fucking point in being so negative all the time? rhetorical question, not looking for answers. Also, my blog, so no flaming

still no footbag for me.. damn i've been sick. i have been able to do little bits of work on the barn, but there's no way i could do cardio right now without basically coughing a lung out. i think i'll be better by tomorrow though and i plan to play at the ymca - i hate playing solo there, i feel so conspicuous, but my heat tent is gone, and the barn has been transformed into a work zone.
speaking of which, preparation is the most important part. barn is starting to look pretty bare which is key. need to have room to easily move around in there while lifting/leveling/plumbing

YAY! I played footbag last night! I drilled actually, no freestyling really. Just a couple runs to impress some gawkers. But drilled at the YMCA. And it wasn't that uncomfortable - I found a spot opposite of where we normally play that's more "private".
Also, I started a new list of tricks to work on, and it's just a smarter list. For one, I'm only practicing one side or the other on about 1/2 the tricks (like weakside ripwalk.. b/c the strong one doesn't need work etc.). For another, the list is less ambitious - like instead of trying to drill every possible thing I'm not 100% at, I picked about a dozen things I'd like to have down.
Highlights..
- the feeling where the jump/dex leg in atomic is the force that causes the ball to be set was working for the first time ever and I hit a ton of atomic tricks on both sides.
- hit lots and lots of swirls on both sides
- hit lots of each of these tricks on weakside: smear, blur, ripwalk, pixie ss mirage
- hit a bunch of tries at spinning clipper > spinning osis on both sides. This is only really notable because I haven't previously done spinning to spinning that much, and I never really hit spinning osis, and I don't think I ever hit it on weakside before.
but overall, it was just really fun to play. I came home and said to the wife "I still want basketball to stay as a part time hobby, and I want footbag to be my focus... I think I can still improve and I like playing". Which was a fun couple sentences to say and mean
bwaaaaaaaaaah, sappy

lots of barn progress lately. uncovering neat history of the barn stuff as I rip walls down. it's just one of those things that only I will ever really appreciate in this building. Kind of personal that way. hard to explain.
ace hardware today for some specialty bolts that i need for the project. i love little hardware stores. to pricey to use for the big stuff, but if I was ever rich, I'd only shop there. true service, great products.
amazon for a couple great deals. the recip saw that i have on the way is nice. some really good saw blades.. a great deal on a water level (this particular one hooks to a normal garden hose which makes it more versatile than others I've looked at). but the real score was tow straps. I was going to use chain with the come alongs (note: a 'come along' is a type of winch use to pull things... in my case, 3 such winches will be used to pull the buiding back to plumb [plumb is the left to right version of "level"]). Chain is fucking ridiculously expensive. Like $200 plus just for my project. I found tow straps on sale for $30 total!!!! 3 straps at $10 each.. 10,000 pound capacity each. NICE. $170 saved
home depot for big shopping trip tonight. After this trip, I will have everything I need to do the project (except unforseen stuff that always pops up).
practiced footbag by myself at the YMCA today. Good practice similar to last one above. Highlight was that my weakside stepping practice has helped quite a bit. The weakside finally (FINALLY) feels like the strongside.

rambling a little. my blog, no flame wars allowed
OK, so I broke my rule about not posting on modified. Not once, but twice!! Ok, so here's my justification...
1st time was in General section, "Why do you play" thread. I was up late night, pretty tipsy from some drinks after hard work on the barn. So beer is my justification.
2nd time was to simpyl smile in reply to the following post from kicking circle topic about current facebook terms. It's the perfect post. We might as well shut this thing down, because it doesn't improve from here. It's perfect because when I saw that it was Sam doing the writing, I just assumed it was gonna be really eccentric.. But instead, I was very pleasantly surprised that it was just totally right on, totally what everyone was thinking, and just funny. And timely.

that 13 year old kid in vids section is awesome. such a mature game in terms of form (for the most part) and trick selection.
worked my ass off on barn this weekend. besides the shopping I mentioned (which was a very important, if unglamorous, step), i finished all prep work. Again, prep is the most important part. Walls are down, demolition done, work zone is staged.
kicking tonight
tomorrow, install eye bolts in barn and put first jacks in place to straight the first beam

We could call it Jeremy's response to goddamned everything.
Oh fuck it it would always be the same anyway
I disagree because blah blah blah blah blah

Ah I love the sky, its so blue..
Jeremy: I disagree, the sky isnt blue, its really the light reflecting off the blah blah blah which makes you percieve that blah blah blah and therefor its not really a color blah blah also sometimes its not blue blah blah and your blanket statement of its so blue is incorrect blah blah blah SHUT THE FUCK UP!

ugh there's someone thats REALLY bugging me lately on the forum.
id consider it rude for me to blow him up in your blog like this but we all know he's too busy critiquing everyone in the worlds game to read anyone's blog.
if youre not sure who i mean...
in other news...
i fuckin love hardware stores too. i feel like there's nowhere else in the world that i want to buy as big of a percentage of their stuff as a hardware store.
jeez looks like i wont even recognize the barn next time i see it
i definitely want to visit this summer after all the madness has died down, but my girlfriend will have to tag along (she wont mind if you dont
) as well because i dont have a car anymore (but she does)
anyway, hope everything is good, etc

and of course jeremy is just in a league of his own...This thread just makes me want to puke on my computer screen.
Here are facts that some people should consider before even considering posting:
-If you just footed Blurriest for the first time, you can't assume somebody better than you can do Alpine Nemesis Swirl.
-If a 5dex has been hit, it doesn't mean 6dex could be hit.
-Those players who could hit new tricks with a lot of dexes don't want to spend entire session hunting for new ridiculous move.
-You can not just combine an uptime component to a downtime component. There's always the footwork, components turning midtime, and muscle strenght.
Now here are my statements regarding the whole thing:
-a 6dex is possible, with Symp Barraging Nuclear set
-a 6dex will never be hit (properly clean and good execution)
Don't bother saying "we'll prove you wrong!" because you won't.

derail: lol, I'm in the same boat. Modified is turning into American's versus European's with the Canadian's remaining neutral.

Actually, that was one of the considerations when I analyzed "new building vs. renovate existing building". In some areas, the local fire department will use it as practice. Can't do that in my case because the barn is too close to the house.I'd probably burn the place down.

good footbag practice at the ymca. same as other recent updates. hit another couple blurriest on the one side. footed blurry whirl. lots of spinning osis. lots of swirls both sides. good atomics one side, hurt my neck on the other side (so weird). lots of "you're a freak" looks from those running around the track where I play. oh, and a serial killer jumping rope nearby.
oh, and i emailed back and forth with the author of the greatest barn book ever. how cool is that? got advice from the guy that wrote THE book on how to do what I'm doing. HE believe in me (that's at nathan and kevin.. and everyone else.. you haters... ha ha)

lost my 2 favorite footbags. correction: kids found them in my bag, and they're now someplace that I'll never find for like the next 6 months. luckily, i have 3 other bags that are good enough. (Drew.. need to make that purchase sooner than later though)

kicking tonight, yay. eff hoops right now. my stress levels are through the roof with this economy (I've never had to lay off an employee before, and it looks like i will have to within the next 2-3 weeks.. really bumming me out, I feel responsible even though I know that's irrational). anyways, footbag de-stresses. basketball is ultra competitive, stressful activity for me. so I'm just not drawn to it right now. do what's fun.

major barn set back last night. center post (aka, the most important post in any structure) is completely rotted out. I don't even really know how the building is still standing to tell the truth. Evasive action took place (aka, temp support braces). Order of operations is now flipped around a bit. Tonight/tomorrow night, better bracing in place, then need to sawzall out the old post and completely replace it (including digging a new footer for it). Sounds hard, but it's really actually not too bad. It's lucky that I caught the issue before trying to lean the building straight - the post would have snapped in 1/2. Well, not lucky - I mean, I specifically did a "well check" on all posts and beams before beginning.. and thus found this problem.
good news is that my buddy has 1 leftover 6x6 post and two 4x6 posts that he's selling me cheap. Helps him out, helps me out. So, this weekend, first footer goes in.

I'm visiting my folks out in Tucson now, and so I went to the YMCA to go swimming. While I was there, I borrowed a basketball and just shot hoops by myself for a while. I made my first 5 jumpshots, including a 3, and thought to myself: "if only I can shoot like this when I play against Riefer."
Just wanted to share.

fun sesh today with brian. he vid taped and said he would post some of it.
highlights...
hit pigbeater again. i think i previously posted i hit it
pixie dlo midrun
just overall, felt good and strong on what I've been doing
had a breakthrough on spinning - not on tricks themselves, but in how to use them in a run. if the vid looks anything like my mind thinks they did, it's a big improvement. hard to explain
night out with the wife.
barn progress coming along. i still think i can do it
edit: c-fan.. no matter how well you shoot when we play, it's over before it starts.
