Circle vs. Routines vs. Shred30

Post by Senor Grommet »

I am asking for a few experienced players to help me estimate the amount of time it would take to run the following competitions (including time needed for all related mathematical tabulations/judging), assuming a turn out of 40 players:

Circle Contest (start to finish) for 40 players.

Shred 30 (assuming 2 rounds) for 40 players.

Routines (assuming 2 or 3 rounds) for 30 players.

Thanks a lot for any help I get!

I don't know about circle contest at all.

With routines I would allow for 3 minutes per person per round including judging - so for 30 players that would be 90 minutes per round. I'd probably add another 10 minutes on top of that just to be safe. If it's a tournament in a gym or something then I'd allow for a little longer to give more detailed notes to the players about their routines, but if it's in a more public venue with a larger amount of non-footbaggers in the audience then your priority should just be to get the scores out as quickly as possible and have as little gap between routines as possible.

For shred 30 it really depends on how well organised you are. If you're well organised I'd estimate about 2 minutes per player per round, including judging. You could definitely do it even quicker than this, but you could also do it taking about 5 minutes per player per round, so you need to plan and prepare prior to the event if time is an issue. So if you're well organised - about 80 minutes per round for 40 players. If time were an issue, I'd only do a single round since you can easily just compare all the scores. The other possibility is to only score the people who look like they're in the top 20 - and then only announce the top 10, and do the rest later. For unscored people it's only about 45 seconds per person.

I know they've done this at Worlds a few times, and it works pretty well.

Shred30 takes the most time to judge accurately, but also keep in mind that it takes the least time to run. So while Circle is easier to judge, it also takes way longer.

Routines can be a bit of a crapshoot. In some cases, the order is clear, and then judging can go quickly (like if one person goes dropless and is the clear winner). In situations where 2 or more routines are close, and at least one of them could be on the podium, then judging can take longer.
