i just started going to this forum again, and i have noticed no ones really on here much anymore, i have a feeling theres a lot of people that used to be really commited to the sport that are probably caught up in other things in there lives and whatnot, its funny theres a thread about this, because i was just saying this to myself. just an observation tho.

There's only so much about footbag that can be discussed. I have a feeling people are still playing, but don't feel the need to discuss with people about it. All that matters is tournament turnout.

I'm playing more, and instead of doing small write ups all the time, I try to do larger right ups less frequently(though not always pertaining to footbag).

And there was the strong push over the last few years to turn modified from a place where people that played footbag hung out, to a footbag resource.
There is only so much footbag that people care to discuss, and we may well be done with that discussion.
Plus, lots of people have left for .org and likewater.ca.

There is a lot of growth. but no new players will find out about places like modified, likewhatever, org and FLIPSIDER!!!. No adverticements for these websites/. There is a new footbag video posted ever day.... On YOUTUBE.
if freestylers just went to the highschools during lunch time guaranteed they would inspire some growth in their area.

Maybe all this focus on practice>practice>practice has lead to more shredders hiding away in their basements and backyards, skooling their tricks, instead of going down to the park to kick the sack around.
Obviously its on a case by case basis, but as an overall trend, it may be the reality.
Just a thought.

What's left to say? Footbag is growing in popularity EVER SO SLIGHTLY and really doesn't hold much staying power because of it. I don't know, I felt my interest in the sport slipping last year and I prowl modified a lot, but there's nothing new or interesting.
Even the video section doesn't get as much love as it used to, nothing really standout has been posted for a while, as far as I know. There's some interesting stuff, but nothing like those epic classic videos that were often posted.
Eh. An eternal cycle of blah. Playing is just so much damn fun though...

I think the point about videos is a good one.
I think there are two reasons for the decline of modified.
1. Footblogs. People post far more in their own blogs then in other topics. People tend to only post and respond to blogs of people they know fairly well. Thus there is less interaction between people who aren't already part of particular social groups and I suspect most people don't read all the blogs either, so there is less chance of people reading posts from other people who they don't know.
2. Frequency of videos. When I started playing footbag pretty much all footage on the internet was of top bap players and I would download every single video I could find. Now getting some kind of video camera and making a video is a tiny investment and almost everybody is doing it. We've been deluged with so much footage that it's boring. I now watch probably about 1% of videos and really only enjoy about 10%. Of course I get some kind of enjoyment from all the footage I watch, but don't get excited very often at all. The deluge of footage means people watch less videos and comment on them less. Again fragmenting the community in pre-existing social groups - I'll watch a video of somebody I know before I watch a video of somebody I don't know unless it gets a lot of responses.
Of course these are trends, so there are certainly plenty of exceptions, so if you point them out it just makes it look like you don't know what a trend is.
I don't know what solutions to these issues are. Getting rid of footblogs and videos is obviously a dumb idea. I don't even know if there needs to be a solution. The popularity of footbag is much more related to marketing and promotion than how many people post on modified.

I totally agree with you on this point. I used to download and save everything i could find about footbag, even if it was of someone i didnt know or someone who wasn't good at footbag. I have old videos of johnny suderman playing in his kitchen, jeremy mirken hitting the wall with his head, and casey panyk(sp?) failing at moves.
