is it possible to lose muscle mass? how would you go about achieving this? (while not gaining fat weight, obviously)

Yes, it is possible to lose muscle mass, or muscular atrophy. This can be achieved a number of ways which I do not recommend. Low caloric intake, low protein or amino acid intake, being sick or having a poor immune system, having a calcium deficiency, not resting or sleeping enough, having a venereal disease, or having a genetic pre-disposition.

Listen, don't lose muscle mass. Muscle mass regulates your metabolic rate an how many calories you expend each day. Muscle requires fuel and activity to grow, continue growing and you will continue being healthy. Lose muscle mass and you will be more prone to illness and fatigue.

I know you probably can't diagnose this, but I've been having a serious pain in my hips the last couple of days, and it's troubled me to walk. It feels like it's something to do with the joint under my thgh muscle, any idea what could be the cause of the pain?

Hey Aaron, thanks for all the feedback you've given everyone!

Have you heard of Stemulite? I've read on some forums and many people seem to think it is a scam, what's the deal?

Also, I believe I sprained my knee about 5 days ago, ice/rest the first 3 days and now I've been applying pressure using an ace bandage. Seemed like my knee popped out of place and right back into position, still hurt at the time though.
anything else I should do? It's been healing quickly, how long should I wait before getting back into serious footbag training?

thanks!

Thanks for the comment. About the injury, I have no idea even what part of your thigh you are speaking about let alone the actions that worsen and improve the pain. I cannot tell you about what your injuries are, only that you should follow basic first aid.

Protection
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

You can also do contrast baths alternating hot and cold water, thirty seconds warm, 2 minutes cold, and repeat.

I've a couple questions concerning whey protein and exercises.

Suppose I'm doing strenuous work outs 5 days a week-3 days cardio and lifting weights the 2 other days. I use 100% whey protein supplement I bought @ GNC. I'm trying to tone up and get lean muscle, while at the same time lose some of the water fat I have and get stronger.

Since I'm slightly more interested in endurance for footbag, triathlons, and tae kwon do, is this the right method? Though I definitely want to build strength too. I'm satisfied so far with results I've seen, but I'm assuming it gets harder to improve once you're in better shape, at least with experience I've had.

What would you say are the 4 or 5 most effective free-weight exercises for the entire body?

Your knowledge in this dept. is greatly appreciated as I would like to learn much of this. Thanks again! :P

Aaron will know better than me, but if I had to choose only 4 exercises I would choose: Bench Press, Deadlift, Pull-up, and Squat. No need to limit yourself to only these though. Aaron might add barbell row or military press to these.

If you are trying to increase your overall fitness though i would probably add at least one more day of lifting to your routine. Cardio can burn muscle so you want to make sure you are getting good lifts on your whole body to prevent atrophy. You could try a 3 day split with Chest & arms/Legs/Back & shoulders. I would switch up the split every once and a while though and vary your exercise choice each week. A Mon/Wed/Fri approach works well.

Cardio is good too, but it you play footbag a lot you might consider using footbag as your cardio. Play for long runs and try to keep the heart rate up.

Hey, Aaron. Do you know what magnetic bands are for? How do they work? Could they help with a pain in your knee? Thanks for any reply :).

They are used for IMMORTALITY: http://www.alexchiu.com

On another note: Aaron, I was thinking about enlisting as a Marine. What can you tell me about your experiences? Good, bad, worthwhile, etc.

Hello I started working out on monday and I'm using p90x+ and its 6 days a week, but it includes yoga and a fighting style for 2 days. Well my goal is to weigh 130 pounds in 3 months and i dont want it to be fat, i want it to be muscle. Im 15 years old, 5'4 and 100 pounds. Do you think my goal is achievable? Also what would be something good i can eat?
And another question, is Whey protein my best choice to buy as in a protein shake category? Because I have a thing called Gainer, and i wanna try something else.
Also what should i mix it with? water, milk or what? :P
I hope u answer my questions Thanks a lot.

hey aaron,

so i'm sure you know that i'm really skinny, but for the past couple months i've been working out a lot and have put on about 10 lbs. my assumption is that it's mostly muscle but i'm not really sure. my problem is that i have a really big stomach basically. it sticks out alot but definitely isn't fat because i can see definition w/o flexing. i've heard that eating too many carbs can do this, and the other thought i had is that my stomach just looks big compared to my undersized chest. what do you think?
