Erik how did you get those black lines? Did you outline with a paint marker after you'd painted the rest?

Erik, very cool style on those paintings.

Instead of acrylic, you might try gouache. It doesn't dry as fast and you can reactivate it once it's down on the paper. Also check out watercolor paper - it makes a big difference. It works well for a lot of media, including paint, pastel, marker...

And a generic tip for painting - always work from your lightest colors to your darkest. Basically do a wash of your lightest colors and then just keep layering up until you're on black.

Those portraits look really neat though, good job.

Danny, I used a brush pen.
(But I've done this with india ink and a brush before too. This was my first time trying a brush pen also!) I might try gouache, but it goes on smooth, doesn't it? I like that thick painty texture that you get from acrylic and oil, but I don't want the waiting time and the toxicity of oil (pretty sketchy as it is that my yellow paint tells me that I will get cancer if I breathe it in!). I'll remember to ask your advice if I'm still having trouble; thanks Zac.

Actually, I have, like, a whole set of oil paint stuff that prolly cost me $200 a long time ago, but I'm too scared to use it! It was required for art school, but they never taught me anything in my three years there. For real. I learned more about acrylic paint in 5 minutes on Google than I did in three years of school. True story. (And a waste of time.)

there is so much talent in this thread!

Me and my buddy Garrison are working on Promoting footbag around BSU campus and Boise in general so we were messing with stalls and photoshop and this was my favorite pic, eventually It will be turned into a flyer

If you're painting with acrylic, and it's drying too fast...
are you using water? especially for your underpainting, it's good to lay out your values with some watered down acrylic.
if that's not it, I would recommend buying some medium, which allows the paint to be more workable and dry less quickly

here's a link to some good mediums, utrecht's stuff is usually pretty reliable

also, you can buy different mediums for different effects you would like to create with the paint.

or

if you want to skip the mediums and water, try oil painting
oil paint takes much longer to dry, thus staying workable for much longer
I would start with water soluble oils though because otherwise you'd have to get some turpentine
and it smells
and water is much easier to get your hands on
I also prefer water soluble oils to oil paint in general

Don't dismiss canvas right away, it's the best surface I've ever used
but if you don't like it, try getting some thick watercolor paper, which works pretty well with all mediums, because it's so sturdy
you could also try applying gesso to some paper to make it more pant friendly

oh and I usually use blue (probably phthalo) to make darks with skin tones, but that color looks like it's working

definitely use your oil paints
just be careful because they stay wet, so they're more fragile
but they won't give you cancer
