Beantown Throwdown ‘09, The Director’s Cut

Part 1: Friday Night
Thursday night before anyone had arrived in Boston and the tournament had yet to even begin I accidently put my cell phone through the wash. Several emails and about an hour worth of time in front of a blow drier and suddenly I had a working cell phone again. Although it feels like the weekend started about six months ago, my weekend of the Throwdown started at around 3 PM on Friday when I left work driving my girlfriend’s car I had borrowed the night before. I went to her house and picked her up and we went and ran a few last errands before driving to the South Station bus/train terminal to pick up the two Kevins from Beverly. It wouldn’t prove to be the last time we took that 15 minute drive before the end of the weekend. As Kevins piled into the back seat of the car Hogan asked if anyone else had arrived yet. I laughed in his face, while somehow still keeping my eyes safely on the road ahead and replied that unfortunately they were the first there and Jenn and I had to finish painting “Beantown Throwdownâ€

i kicked today! after kicking like 3 hours sunday i feel like thats a pretty good accomplishment, especially since i was shreddin like a champ. most of my strings were more than 20 contacts.

WRITE UP PART 2, Saturday and Sunday


Saturday began for me when I woke up around 8:30. I had trouble sleeping the night before, even though I didn’t get to bed until around 2, and I couldn’t seem to get back to sleep in the morning. There’s just something amazing about having your house be full of friends from around the world that you either don’t get to see almost ever, or you’ve never even met, all that play your favorite sport. My mom made a dish we call baked eggs for breakfast, its kind of like if you made a lasagna out of eggs, flour, milk, broccoli, ham, bacon, etc. Basically it’s like a delicious omelet lasagna, and she made enough for everyone, plus english muffins, toast, coffee, etc. I started setting up mats, cones, caution tape, boom box, etc outside in the driveway around 11, and people starting warming up pretty much as soon as I went outside. It took me about until 12:00 to realize I was already in over my head. I wanted to register everyone as they came in the night before and figure out exactly what everyone was competing in, get pools set up, print out scoring sheets, etc, but I just got overwhelmed by people actually showing up, and I let people pretty much do their own thing and wander off before I even realized I was already neglecting the Great Plan.
So while I’m setting everything up outside, and trying to warm up a little myself, I’m also giving Jenn instructions how to print out the judging sheets and everything, and didn’t even think about seeding people. Long story short, I corralled everyone that was supposed to be competing in the front room downstairs and made sure everyone was accounted for and the pools set up. Competitions were supposed to start at around 12:30, they started around 1:30. Guh. It didn’t help that a lot of people that said they weren’t going to compete decided to at the last minute, and none of this seemed like a big deal until it was around 4:30 and we were almost done competitions, almost 2 hours later than I wanted to be finishing them. Either way, enough focusing on the negative. Competitions were awesome anyway, Bruce Dole, Jon Schneider, and Drew Krause helped me immensely by doing ALL the judging, I can’t even imagine how much more stressful things would have been otherwise and I appreciate it HUGELY.
The only 3 things I would change is getting setting up the pools for circle earlier in the morning, not having both Big 1 and Sick 3, and most important, having circle comp first. I think a lot of people were really tired by the time we got to circle (I couldn’t relate, I barely played at all the first day…) and it showed, and I felt bad but there wasn’t anything I could do by that point. Either way it was a learning experience and at least that meant a lot of different people got an opportunity to win a bunch of different competitions. Bruce Dole generously made AMAZING trophies, (check out the tournament thread if you haven’t seen em yet) and we had tons of bags and stuff to give out as prizes, I don’t think anyone can complain about that.
Then for awhile people played across the street at the park (I wanted to do more of this as well, and I wouldn’t have minded if people had gone over to play at any point, I wasn’t trying to limit anyone, I was just to busy doing other stuff to bother stopping and saying “ok everyone, you can officially play at the park if you want….â€

Pete, thanks for this beautiful write-up. But I didnt know that this weird guy was dropping lines all weekend however, what I in fact know is that the organizers forgot to put him on the list of competitors... always... it was indeed a blast! I will be back for a BeantownJam anytime.

I gotta admit winning those two trophies was really amazing for me (not that it acccccctualley matters:roll: ). The feeling of winning them in a great city surrounded by awesome people, my homie kevin and you, Doug and Ben Little who have taught me so much, was surreal. Not to mention both Drew and Ian are both superior footbag players and it was awesome competing with them.


Best jam ever Pete. I know that's totally not true, but Boston fucking rules and I doubt anything else I'll ever attened will surpass last Saturday.

thats actually my main feeling about the whole thing, it definitely felt mad surreal to have my house full of footbaggers, or to look around saturday and see my back yard packed with people shredding. very cool.

what has doug taught you other than how to be an addict?


SESSION SUNDAY? i say YES. i think Little B is in...somewhere...like vermont or something (he travels an awful lot for someone with no job, ive noticed), but im sure doug will be down, im down, and maybe even fran and or chris?? i'll text everyone.

Nice write-up Pete. Once again, awesome job running the event. You definitely succeeded in making the event overall FUN which is what matters most.

Oh and btw, when Kevin's illusions are deeper than Confucius, he'll have me to thank.... Just give it a little while.... Like, maybe a year or something.
