Steel City Freestyle
Had a mini session today after my last final exam. I spent about 45 minutes teaching two little girls how to toe stall. Rose and Dee; they were probably like 8 and 11. In exchange they taught me how to jump rope. And Dee showed me how fast she can drink a bottle of juice. On request, I ran into my house and found an old footbag that is pretty busted to give to them (it's all I had). It was a good day. I love my park.
Ahhhhh yeah, it's summer now. 85 degrees outside. Graduating college tomorrow....and got laid off on Friday. Life just got interesting, but I'm sipping a cherry vodka/bacardi superior/cran raspberry and passing time on the stoop watching people go by. It's all good.
(Let's play the "see if Matt Cross reads the scf blog") I'm soon going to need a new bag. I'm poor and unemployed right now though, so it will be (hopefully) only a week or two until I can get you some cheddar. I'll hit you up soon though.

Kicked with Matt,
*string-ducking clipper-weakside matador-pm-string
*spinning clipper-far simple swirl. spinning clipper worked well today
*ducking far rev. whirl
*started out with some long strings
*added some weaksided whirls and rev. whirls back into my game
*hit a nice fairy set on my left leg
*getting a grip on hippy atomic, right side. Sunk my smoothest legbeater yet.
Edit, to be thorough:
*Swirls on left side were strong
*I footed ducking syposium far rev. whirl twice on the other side
*Ducking butterfly swirl is close on both sides
*Dimwalk swirl seems close

*New move: Ducking swirling inf. hit it three times, but no seal. almost had it about 30 other times. At least.
*weak Spinning osis- weak paradox mirage-string
*gyro clipper on my good spinning side is looking decent
*started a decent string with four consecutive ducking inf.
*some good longish strings
*swirl-twirl-pm third try
*scary-painful-nuclear side seems better with a new "locked and hippy" form. Maybe this is possible after all, without the pain I got when i hit those four new moves in one day last Winter

I may have phrased it wrong. I meant to say ducking far butterfly swirl, but I was trying out the inf. version to save letters...Matt Cross wrote:"New move: Ducking swirling inf."
what?
that is the most hardcore move I've ever heard of.
I think it might be possible to hit swirling ducking inf. if I tried a hundred times. I get some unusal sets when I go for ripstein. Ducking swirling inf (in that order- boy, I did goof- I painted walls 9 hours before kicking two hours and posting.)
Ducking far simple swirling, far butterfly would be hard as hell.
With regard to my style- My game is both consistent and not at all. Some things I am very both sided and strong with, while others components need a lot of work. I can throw down some strings that impress me, but I spend most of my time trying to work out a few things on both sides that have eluded me for a long time.
Today was good. I think I will blog a bit.
I watched this video last night.

EDIT: this was the wrong one... lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PcL6-mjRNk&NR=1
I don't believe I have ever heard the song before either. Reminds me how important music is to me as well. But, going back to the video- what a wake up. Holy-moly.
I have not been living my life as much as it has been living me.
Woke up. Picked up some fresh contact lenses from my eye doctor in the South Side of Pittsburgh, where it happens one of my favorite people will be interning this Summer. I did not like the way I was dressed. I actually cared. Like I was living in NYC again. Materialistic, nostalgic, but altogether self-conscious. In a good way. So, I set out to change things a bit.
Since my GF and I are going to Italy next weekend I justified a splurge. I bought some new gear- sneakers, a cap, Levi's, some indigenous looking wool/acrylic hoody, and then proceeded to get my hair cut very short.

Felt bloody good.
Went to a CMU undergrad art show, with Matt. Realized how truly competitive and anti-social I am when it comes to art. Ate a bit of Chinese food and kicked briefly. And had a great time.
Ben was around with his friend Ian. Went out for a bit with Matt and some of my artist friends and got drinks. Matt left early. Then met up with him, Ben and Ian later for drinks and challenging conversation. I taught Ian perspective drawing theory and in return learned some well articulated theory on dimensions 1-11.
Highlights:
*Ripwalk-far simple swirl-string with torques, etc
*Ducking butterfly-whirl-string
*Ducking butterfly-far butterfly swirl
*Ripstein-osis-string, second try
*Longish string with both Dynos
*A couple nice ripwalks from the weak side
*good strings.
Also, I sent an proposed an idea for a painting to do me made for an upcoming group show. Something epic. Wish me luck!

Great video.
Edit: here's a vid of ducking butterfly swirl, like we talked about. Maybe seeing it from a 3rd person perspective will help illustrate some of the concepts I was trying to explain.

Great form on both sides, Ken. I see what I can change:
I need to think about the butterfly dex even less, meaning I need to get the form down so well that I am just doing a simple swirl, but the bag can sneak through seemlessly.
The reason ths has been hard has been for multiple reasons:
* I twist my landing knee in to enable more room for a larger diameter to the base of "conic" swirl window. You do not.
* You keep your landing knee much closer into your chest for the whole second half of the trick. Like you are dropping with a skate board, you match the speed and timing of the bag, or are executing a dod motion as the second part of a trick (the sort of dt motion that I would like to get to sooner than later.)
So, three things to work on:
Keeping my knees closer to my chest, coming down with the bag and making a swirling gesture more parallel to the ground across the length of my ankle to the knee.
These three things together should lead to the window I described earlier.
Word.
Thanks!

Kicked with Matt
*many weakside spinning clippers
*weakside gyro clipper first try
*strong side gyro clipper to far simple swirl, and then mid-string later
*strong side spinning pm- string
*some really sharp looking dynos. I think the heavier MC bag made it easier to hit these blinder deeper
*some good weakside ripwalks
*some good longish strings
Edit:
*I footed every drifter I tried on my strong side today. I hit some mid-string as well. I have decided to work on the one side for now, get the timing solid, and then revive the other side, since I think about it quite differently when I hit it there.
*My right, hippy atomic seemed decent today. Looks like some things are sticking in my muscle memory.
*tried to hit rev. swirling spinning toe, and I kept accidently freezing twirl instead

Kicked with Matt. Last session before leaving town (Maryland-NJ-Rome-Florence-Venice) please wish Jess and I good luck on our vacation
Good session.
Highlights:
*ducking bfX2-string-Ducking bfX2-string-Ducking bfX2-string-ducking PM (weakside)-ss inf. drop on other side ducking pm
*dyno/spinning clipper bsos. I really like my new dyno style
*rev. whirlX4 on right side-string-once on other
*1/1 on swirl both sides
*dropped spinning swirl
*weak side drifter a couple times
*three atomic tricks in a lengthy string
*weak side hippy atom twice
*taps on my weak atomic side. A bunch of them.
*tap-butterfly swirl
*ripwalk bsos, out of butterfly on strong side (twice, but I dropped on the butter fly stall of the second one- the set did pop though)
*Stepping sets were looking good on my strong side today
*ducking pm-pixie butterfly-string (second try)

Thanks Drew
Do you mean that I keep improving or do you mean that I literally update the blog every time I kick? I do this so that I can't suck in the dark. Best thing I learned in Art school is that fear of humiliation is the best motivator sometimes.
I forgot a highlight:
*ducking bf X 5 or 6 (I thought maybe 5, but Matt said 6) to a string

Hey Drew,
Thanks! I hope we do get a chance to kick again soon. NYFA Jam, certainly is a possibility. Just gonna have to fight to get some cash more cash, once I am back from Europe.
Another highlight that I forgot:
*Rev. whirl to weak whirl-string-drop on simple swirl. I think I amy consider putting whirls back in my strings once I get drifter squared. Not before I get advice on keeping them safe for my knees though.
A challenge for myself:
*dyno-spinning clipper-rpt
This will be tough, but it will force me to further dial 4 things that I can very realistically dial. Especially know that I do my dynos differently (deeper, lower, and held longer)

Blogging from Venice.
Going to sleep soon. GF and I are already a bit drunk. Italy is amazing. I have been eating way too much. Total disregard for my bank account. Just eating eating eating. I am so gonna pay when I get home.
Walked so much these last few days that my foot has been killing me. Every other moment I have been fiending to kick. Makes me question what a vacation really is.
