Good and Bad, Less and More

Post by King Monkey »

Could anyone who is interested in the moderation of this forum, please post a few thoughts about what is good and bad about a) The Rules and b) The Moderation practices, as they stand currently.
Also suggest what you would like to see More and Less of on the forum, with regards to Rules and Mod practices.

Good idea. The way I see it, its like there are two sets of rules. The first set is "what isn't allowed" and the second set is "what should be done when someone breaks a rule."

I think the first set is pretty good. I'd include two things, which as far as I know, haven't been included: spam users will be banned & any spam topics deleted; trolling will not be allowed.

I think the second set of rules could be loosened up. I have absolutely no problem with the mods having leeway to lock topics that, in their judgement, have turned into flame wars. I have no problem with the mods using their judgement to determine if a user is trolling, or to warn a user that despite what their intentions might have been, the effect is the same as if they had been deliberately trolling.

So basically I think the rules have been fine, but the enforcement should be tweaked so that mods can deal with that one user in a thousand who is a source of a lot of problems, appears to be doing it deliberately, and contributes little or nothing. That is necessarily difficult to precisely define, I understand some users might not like anything that isn't precisely defined, but I think we can live with it.
