Finally got around to spending a gift voucher I got at Christmas for a popular music/dvd chain (Sanity). I bought 100 blank DVDs :lol:

Lost touch footy last night to little kids :x :cry:

Well there were two in particular that were about 10 years old, plus a couple more who were around 16, but also a couple of guys who have been amongst the best players in Tasmania for the last 10 years at least. Still disappointing though. We mainly lost because we have a large number of players who have either never played before or never played at near this level, and every score we let in was soft. I managed to score 4 tries, which puts me on 6 for the season after 2 games. To put that in some perspective, the leading scorer in the summer comp scored something like 18 tries for the season.

Footy is shit. The coach refuses to pick me for the moment because I didn't do the 5 months pre season training - which I didn't do because I was playing touch footy on those days, and then we lost for the first time this year on Saturday. I guess that's good for me though, if we're losing games and not picking our best team possible. Anyway I'm going to train super hard tonight and Thursday and see what happens. This week we're playing the bottom team on the ladder (we're the top) so it would be a great opportunity to impress the coach without too much pressure.

Work is also shit. I've just been told to urgently document a job I do where the part that I do consists of getting the files and then sending them straight on to somebody else. The manager asking me to do the job is like "that'll be quick to document then." Yes, so quick you have to wonder what the point is of doing it. meh.

Haven't really had time for much footbag. Had a short little kick last night drilling pdx blenders. Watched some videos and was experimenting between the two different techniques (knee up or knee down). I think I prefer the knee up style although Honza does the knee down and his blenders are about the most consistent of anybody.

Playing my first game of Aussie Rules football for the season tomorrow. So excited! We're playing the bottom team, who haven't won a game, but we have a few injuries and missing players so it could be close. Great opportunity for me to step up though. Fiasco regarding selection last week. Apparently the assistant coach didn't pass on my message that I was available and what he told me about not being selected until I'd been training more was bullshit. Obviously I should have told the coach I was keen to play as well, but he wasn't there on the first night of training (we train twice a week). Apparently he thought I just wanted to train but not play. Why would anybody do that?

Anyway good final outcome.

So footy went really well yesterday. I was the leading goal kicker on the field with 3 goals and named in the best players in the paper. So that was good :). It was really really wet, so not good conditions for football or for me, since my only good footy attributes are being a fast runner with good skills. In the wet you can't run fast and there's always lots of players around the ball and you can't control it well either. However it was awesome to be back playing anyway. I played on the wing, forward pocket and on the ball.

At one point in the game one of the other midfielders had scruffed one of our opponents and looking very mean towards him. I didn't know what was going on, but I ran over and scruffed the kid as well, and glared at him :lol: . It turned out he'd elbowed one of our players in the head. Anyway after the little bit of pushing and shoving he starts looking really scared and says; "hey, I'm only 17." :lol: Word of advice for other 17 year olds out there. If you want to avoid getting in fights with guys who are 25, don't elbow them in the head.

Anyway moments later he started a massive brawl and was dragged from the field by his coach, and spent the rest of the day on the bench, which would have been terrible, given that it was 9 degrees, there was snow on the mountain and really wet.

Here are some photos anyway, especially of me looking retarded.

Image
The brawl. I wasn't involved, mainly because 1. I don't like getting involved in those kinds of things - I play footy because I enjoy the sport, not because I enjoy fighting, and 2. because I was one of the few players in our team not in our forward 50, and so was too far away to be involved.

Image
Me getting a kick :)

Image
Kicking my second goal, which was our first for the final quarter. This was maybe the best goal I've ever kicked. Dispossessed the opposition in a tackle, fought on the ground for the ball, pushed it loose, ran after it and picked it up and then snapped across my body.

Image
Kicking my third goal. Ball went over the back of a pack, I ran it down and snapped it through. God I look unco in this photo though :P You can see that I wasn't that far out and the angle wasn't too bad either - although I'm on the wrong side for a right foot snap - but it's straight enough that it didn't matter too much.

Loved it anyway. I'm pretty sore today though.

edit;

Here is the 17 year old kid who I scruffed. He was actually bigger than I am, although not by much.

This is a funny image of me running :P Perhaps next week I won't tuck my shirt in, although actually I'd prefer to be harder to tackle than to look less dorky :P The guy you can see behind me was my opponent when I was having a rest in the forward pocket. Big, but slow and stupid, so that was fine with me :). The bald guy next to him was my opponent while I was in the middle. Not fast enough a runner, but good around stoppages. I never noticed him during the game, but the guy in the top right corner looks hilarious :lol:

edit2; After I kicked my third goal some guy (not the one pictured) ran into me. I think my response was pretty good though. I laughed at him and said; "what's wrong with you?" He just kind of grunted back at me :P It was certainly better than my line earlier in the day where I was cleaned up after a kick and just said to the guy "you idiot" (we got an up field free kick though, so my comment was accurate) although his comeback was pretty spectacular - "no I'm not." :lol:

Check it out;

Highlights from the Southern Premier Touch League grand final. The premiership we won was a division below this, but I've played with 3 players on these teams and against most, and have played around this level a lot in the past (and may well again). The guy who scores the second last try (in the corner wearing a purple shirt) also plays in my team and I played state with the guy who dives to stop him. This is what (relatively) good touch football looks like anyway (and you can even see me taking a photo at one point :P )

Pretty awesome stuff.

Also on a super technical note - compare the dives from the third last attempted score in the video (the second last actual score - my mate in the corner) with the second last attempted score (the red team in the other corner).

The first of those two, the ball is completely outstretched and put down right on the line ahead of any other part of the body. The second of those two, he puts the ball down a meter over the line, is way higher off the ground, and of course gets touched and goes on to lose the game.

Not that it means anything to anybody who reads this I'm sure, but dive at the line, not over it, and if you find yourself too close - as the second player was, dive lower and put the ball down - he could easily have reached down instead of out, and he may well have won the game if he did. Good stuff anyway :)

Must admit, that's a pretty funny mistake for that guy to make. Sounds fairly basic in terms of touch... If you're in danger of getting touched, get the ball to the ground ASAP. Yep, makes sense. :P

You'd be surprised - lots and lots of people dive badly, even at top levels, and he looks pretty clear, he probably thought he was going to win the game.

Managed to score 2 tries today directly against two of the guys from that team, so that was good although we did get hammered. 10 vs 2 I think the final score was. Getting very frustrated with touch. Also I hurt my AC joint again. Will probably miss footy this week because of it too :x

I'll see how it feels tomorrow. Am still going to train though.

Success. Although my shoulder is a lot worse than feared, it looks like I've done no serious damage and I'll miss up to 8 weeks of sport, but probably less. Actually that's shit, but at least it's going to get better. I could miss as little as 2 or 3 weeks.

Well it's good you haven't done any permanent damage! As annoying as it is to miss games, permanent damage would be the major suxxor :(

Yeah I quit because I'm going back to uni full time and also because I hate my job, that was supposed to be a data analyst, but due to many poor managerial decisions, ended up being endless data entry. I don't think it's possible to convey just how boring 8 hours a day, 5 days a week of data entry can be. It is lucky for the world that it's moderately difficult to make nuclear weapons.

I still have a month of work left though - finish on July 2nd, so am busy saving up for a black market liver for the end of that week (uni starts July 13).

Shoulder still injured and sore, but getting better. I almost decided to have a sneaky run playing touch yesterday, but wisely chose against it, mainly because I was an hour late for work and couldn't find my touch shoes.

We have a talent contest at the footy club coming up, so a good opportunity to do a footbag routine. I'm thinking probably something short but cool - perhaps the title song from the Pi sound track.

Today I have called my internet service provider and another telephone company (Telstra) about 15 times (no exaggeration). Every time I speak to one, they tell me to speak to the other. We may have finally reached an understanding, but it could be days until the internet is reconnected at home. It turns out our phone line is disconnected, although nobody can tell me why. If there is some way you could kill people over the phone, I would be in trouble now. So long as it is reconnected before I finish up at work it will all be fine.

oh wait wait! let me tell you about my first traineeship! I was 16 years old just got my HSC and was starting uni in 2 months. So i got a traineeship at a finance firm that offered (horrendously expensive) financing to (unsuspecting) households that had signed up for one of their retailer-sponsored credit-cards! My job concerned filled-in forms that people snailed mailed to us in order to apply for these credit cards. I had to decipher what people had scrawled in, and manually write this data back down in another more legible paper form for future data-entry.

That's right I was a hand-written data-entry clerc for 8h/day 5 days/ week :)

and you kids with computers... pff

All this to say, data entry sucks, data analysis is slightly less mind numbing but will also get to you eventually when you start seeing patterns in std-residuals plots everywhere. Props for quitting and heading back to uni though, it's a big decision.

And what's this about liver??

Well I will have a week between finishing work and starting uni. I'm injured and can't play sport. What can I spend that time doing that doesn't involve drinking copious amounts of alcohol, and why would I prefer doing that to drinking copious amounts of alcohol?

OK. got it. Sorry I read liver and immediately thought the kind you eat, not the kind you transplant.

So what are you going to be studying anyway?

Edible liver may also be an option for that week :).

Continuing my arts/science double degree. This semester my subjects are;

Cell Biology, Genetics and Evolution
Earth Resources, Environments and Evolution (geology)
Space, Place and Nature (geography)
Ancient Civilisations 1B; Intro to Classical Literature

Because I did 1 subject in second semester last year, I only need to do three this year, but really hated not being able to do geology last year when it was obviously connected to the subjects I was studying (geography and ecology in particular) so decided I'd do an extra subject anyway. It *only* costs me $926, which I don't need to pay until I finish and get a job, by which time I will be about $30,000 in debt, so I figure a few extra subjects can't hurt.

I did psychology as an elective in first semester last year as part of my arts degree (even though it's a science subject), but found that half the subject was merely devoted to explaining what science was, even though the people doing the explaining have clearly never taught or studied any science subjects apart from psychology (and all must have arts degrees rather than science degrees), so thought I might as well do something interesting and different instead, so went with classical literature for this semester, which will be a bit of challenge.

I'm really looking forward to it anyway, and have even been doing a bit of study on all my subjects in my spare time.

So a bit of news. First this;

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/st ... 88,00.html
Footballer flashes penis on television

FOOTBALL officials in Tasmania are investigating an incident where a player exposed himself during a live TV broadcast.

The Mercury reports AFL Tasmania and Clarence Football club are investigating the incident involving Clarence reserves player Tim Orchard.

Orchard was filmed exposing his penis in the background as senior player Ben Setchell was being interviewed live on ABC TV in the changerooms after Clarence's win over South Launceston at Bellerive Oval on Saturday.

Orchard was fully clothed in his club jacket and pants at the time.

An embarrassed and angry Clarence president Richard Mulligan said the player would front a sub-committee today.

"We unreservedly apologise for any offence that may have been occasioned by the inappropriate action of the player concerned," Mr Mulligan said.

"Certainly we consider it a very serious matter, one which goes to the very essence of the credibility and the public image of our footy club, and we'll take action accordingly."

AFL Tasmania business operations manager Trent Bartlett and the TSL's southern regional manager Wayne Povey viewed the footage last night but would not make a comment until today.

He said Orchard could be charged with behaviour detrimental to the image of the game, as well as facing a penalty from his club.
The significance?

A few posts ago I posted a video from a touch football grand final. I also commented about a particular player diving too far over the line. That player is Tim Orchard, the same guy caught flashing himself live on TV. Good stuff.

In other news I went running today. My first exercise in exactly a month. Fucking so much pain. I'm really unfit at the moment - I expect I'll cough up a lung soon. Ok time considering - 23:30 for 5.5km - so facebook tells me that's 4:16 per km. I'm aiming to get that down to below 4:00 per km before I start training again.

Shoulder is definitely improving. I estimate that I'll be back playing football in 4 weeks (miss the next two games, then we have the bye, then play next). I could probably play the week after next, but it's against the bottom side that hasn't won a game and we have the bye straight after, so I figure missing that one game and having an extra two weeks for it to get better is probably a good thing.

Anyway must go vomit (kidding, but only slightly :P)
