RiP: A Remix Manifesto

Post by Asmus »

This movie is really cool and free.
And it's an important and interesting issue in my opinion.

In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.
The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.
A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.
Which side of the ideas war are you on?

I got to part 7 before just skimming through the rest of it. To be honest, It's pretty boring and I didn't learn anything new from it.

Fuck Girl Talk. He's not that creative or he would make originals. You have every right to manipulate other people's media for your or others entertainment. You have no right to make profit off of someone else's shit. That's pure dishonesty. If these people are so hard for free domain, why do they sell "their" shit instead of just sharing it? It seems hypocritical to me.

The whole thing seemed like a bunch of douchebag hipsters complaining how they just want to steal off everyone's shit and not get fucked with/boohoo baby shit. I agree with them for the most part, fuck record companies and fuck copyright. But, you have to have that basic level of respect for someone else's work. Some people completely rape "Fair Use" and use it to justify straight up stealing shit. And making money from mash-ups/remixes is just as bad a lifting a riff and making money from it. The defense of "oh, I changed it a bit so it's mine and ok to sell" doesn't mean you don't like a little bitch.

Basically, there is no god.

If there were no god, there would be no atheists.

That must be one of the funniest posts somebody has ever made on this forum. You are either very funny, or a great spokesperson for the people who claim religious people are stupid. Great job either way.
