So for a day or two there this blog was sandwiched between David & Jorden. Just like in my dreams.![]()
I'm dividing this post into normal recaps in the beginning, and a big write up of Sunday's big session at the end. Feel free to skip ahead.
Recaps. Some fun sessions, some not so fun sessions. Still trying to work on flip osis, which is the most discouraging thing I've worked on yet. Generally trying to improve my consistency. Weather hasn't always cooperated, did a couple of these sessions in between/during rain.
Independence Park solo Saturday the 25th
osis> pdx mirage> butter> infinity> rpt to 16 contacts (record for this drill)
stepping ss osis (on the side I hadn't hit before)
Welles Park Sunday the 26th w/Zeke, Ronnie, Tom, & Tommy
blender again
Had like one good string. Didn't push myself that hard I guess. But had a lot of fun kicking in the courtyard after getting some food.
Welles Park Thursday April 30th w/Tom, Zeke & Ronnie
blender again
osis> whirl> rpt
pixie muted clipper> muted diving clipper
blurry pickup bsos
PLO> dimwalk> stepping legover> PLO> dimwalk > stepping drop
Portage Friday May 1st w/Tom
This was a tough session for me. Lots of little things weren't very favorable to footbag, and I let it get to me. Had some problem where a contact was sliding off my eye during strings, I didn't like the surface, it was a little chilly & windy, and then a bird shat on my shoulder. It's too bad because during warmups I felt pretty good, and so I thought I could have a pretty good session.
Independence Saturday May 2nd two solo sessions
I turned the bad session into motivation to get consistent. And we all know how to get consistent - drill your brains out.
1st session
25 sets of butterfly> pdx mirage> rpt (best was 3 sets & change)
5 sets of osis> pdx mirage> butterfly> infinity each side
2nd session
5 more sets of butterfly> pdx mirage> rpt
10 sets of pixie muted clipper> pdx mirage> rpt (best was 9 contacts - new record for that drill)
pixie ss clip x25 each side
5 sets of osis> pdx mirage> butterfly> infinity just on flip osis side
Sunday May 3 at the Pier w/a whole crew
So this was the day that we knew James Risden & Daryl Genz would be in town. Hooray! Met up with Tom & Tommy for the trek to Navy Pier at a little after 1. And Zeke actually got on the same bus as us on the way into the Pier. Rarely does transportation in Chicago all come together so nicely. We got to the Pier and headed up to the net spot, which was actually in Jane Addams Memorial Park in between the Pier and the beach. Pretty great spot. Tom & Tommy went to scope out freestyle spots, I went with Zeke up to the net spot.
I said hi to the net guys who were already there - Scot, Cory, and Ted Martin. I may play net one day, who knows, but definitely not right now. I kicked with Zeke to warm up, then Ronnie, Tom, & Tommy rejoined us. Zeke jumped into net, and we got some foursquare going. I played like two games but wasn't feeling it. I'm not really into squares lately. Watched Zeke play some net, it had been the better part of a year since I'd seen him play, and his game looked so much improved.
Reile showed up, and not too long after that, James & Pauline. I'd never met James before, but I had seen video & heard tales of greatness from the crew. So I was pretty excited.
We (Reile, Tom, Tommy, James, Pauline, myself) went down to the spot Tom had scoped out. It was an overhang that jutted out into Lake Michigan from a walkway along the beach. Lots of room, very nice scenery, nice breeze. We didn't lose a single bag over the railing. Got some music going after a bit.
We played for quite a while. Reile & Tom hit symp torque! James hit spinning symp torque. I had some nice symposium drops. The only highlight I remember from me: symp mirage> terrage> rpt> run. Had a tiltless/bop string that James said looked smooth, so that was pretty cool to hear.
And we did a quick demo/explanation of freestyle footbag for a tour group. They had this jackmo tour guide, somebody asked what we were doing and he was like "uh, its called hackysack, I think it was popular in the 90s" so I was like "actually..." (and by "actually" I meant "fuck you tour guide") and did the little spiel that we all know by heart while doing around 20 contacts tiltless/bops, then passed to Reile.
It was fun. Didn't play great, strings were pretty short & inconsistent for the most part, but at least I tried to play at a challenging level.
We went back to the net spot where most everyone had cleared out. Barbara had shown up, Ronnie & Zeke were still there, and soon Tony & Dean (jugglers) and Steve (a kicker from Oak street I think?) showed up for a bit. We took a CIC photo, you can see it over in the CIC blog.
Then we got pizza from Giordano's. Ohhhh yeah.
So I never did meet up with Daryl (he got in around 8, and I needed to head back home). Maybe it'll work out to meet up while he's still in town, it would be cool to meet him. Had a good talk with Zeke on the train ride back up North.
That's it.

I've been kicking it up. Updates.
Wednesday w/Tom @ Welles. It was raining, we played in the gazebo. I didn't write down any highlights but I remember feeling good about how I played. Worked on my toe to toe game for about 45 minutes, then crapped out & did mostly BOPs for the rest of the night.
Thursday drilled solo @ Welles. Here's what I drilled:
And this one highlight: smear> terrage> rpt
The first drill really wore me out I think. The flip osis one took forever to do.
Friday - osis breakdown at Reile's
So we were all chillin at Reile's when the subject of how osis should be done came up. I got motivated to do a few & see what suggestions the guys had for me. Tom also let me use his camera to review how I was doing them. Basically, I had been trying to do them all scoopy, which, whether that makes for a good or a bad osis, was just too hard for me anyway. So my new new osis technique is actually my old osis technique. But probably cleaned up a bit.
Saturday - Zeke, Tom, Marty, Cuba, somebody else @ Welles
It was chilly. Hacked with Zeke for a long time, until Tom got there. Kept hacking/occasionally throwing in freestyle tricks or strings. I tried to work on flip osis every five serves or something. Hack is still so much fun, at least with other good hackers.
Played some squares with the bulletshell of paradise. Won one of the games, but it was very close. Losing a point to a not-very-graceful player stings like injustice.
Then Tom & I freestyled w/the remaining daylight. I really just worked on flip osis, felt a bit more consistent with it.
Sunday - solo @ IP
I did about 20 miles on my bike this morning, so I was expecting a pretty crappy session, but it actually was one of the more satisfying solo sessions I've had. Here's what I drilled:
Oh I also switched up to new lavers a couple weeks back, but didn't make a note of it at the time.
Next couple days should be rest days.

Colin, I wish I could go. Like I said in one of those other threads, I'm very disappointed that work is keeping me from going. Work sucks.
Wednesday May 13 & Thursday May 14 - sessions with Tom. First session was better than the second. Just a little bit more consistent & longer runs. On Thursday we tried kicking at a skate park but the kicking space wasn't very flat. Plus it was crazy windy. So we busted to Welles & Tommy joined us. One of these sessions I hit osis> diving clipper but that's all I remember.
Saturday May 16 - abbreviated drill session at around 9am. Yep, that's am as in morning. Flip osis> pdx mirage> butterfly> infinity> rpt to 16 contacts - twice. Did the same drills I've been doing lately, just fewer sets.
I played in the morning because Cinco de Moustache (in Wisconsin) was later that day. Cinco was way better than the last couple years. There were a couple decent hackers, but also one or two atrocious ones. Fun party.
Sunday May 17 - squares with Zeke at Welles. We played four games, Zeke won three of them. Zeke had the sun setting almost directly into his eyes for the only game that I won. Thank you, sun. All four games were tough & competitive, Zeke's front corner placement was killing me. So a weekend with freestyle, hack, and squares. Not too shabby.
Wednesday May 20 - drilled solo by the lake. Felt good, the only thing that was off was pixie. Flip osis> pdx mirage> run x50 sets. Best of the day was osis> pdx mirage> butterfly> infinity> rpt to 17 contacts. Also symp mirage> butterfly> pdx mirage> rpt to 18 contacts. Need to build that endurance up.

Thanks Reid. I'm trying.
Since the last post -
May 21 solo by the lake.
pixie ss clip x75 on flipside, 25 on strong
pixie muted clipper> pdx mirage> rpt to 15 contacts
ducking clipper> pdx mirage> rpt to 7 contacts
osis> pdx mirage> butterfly> infinity> rpt to 22 contacts
Not including butterfly> pdx mirage> rpt, that 22 contact drill is my longest guiltless string so far. Started working on flip pixie & ducking, which should help fill out my trick vocabulary.
May 23 - two solo sessions at IP
ducking clipper> pdx mirage> symp mirage> rpt
osis> pdx mirage> symp mirage> butterfly> infinity> rpt to 20 contacts
flip smear, paste, dimwalk, & magellan x10 each
ducking clipper> ss clipper> rpt
I dunno, drilled lots of different stuff but I guess those are the only highlights worth mentioning. Unfortunately, these two sessions tore up my left hip pretty bad, so I was in rough shape for the rest of the long weekend. At least now I'm bothsided with my bad hips.
May 24 - tried to have a solo session at Welles. I was going to work on butterfly> whirl> rpt, but my hip just wasn't up for it. A bunch of hackers showed up, I kicked with them for a while.
May 25 - mostly squares session at Welles. Again, I tried to work on butterfly> whirl> rpt, maybe I got it once, but still had a lot of hip pain. Hacked with Zeke for a bit, Ronnie showed up, and we played some squares. I won all three games, somehow.
Not playing tonight. Need to rest my hip & probably do some chores.

Kicked the last five days. Weather was beautiful this weekend, rode my bike a lot. Friday was critical mass, which was fun for a while but then we started wandering through neighborhoods that I already know so I got bored & bailed. Saturday & Sunday was the Do Division street fest, biked down there each day & got to see Handsome Furs, Flosstradomus, and White Rabbits. Another great weekend. Here's footbag stuff:
stepping heel bsos in a tiltless run
DATW bsos in a guiltless run
osis> pdx mirage> symp mirage> butterfly> infinity> rpt to 23 contacts
At the critical mass session, Tommy hit both of the challenges I gave him (clipper> pickup> rpt & smear). Tommy has tons of potential, meaning he'll get really good if he wants to. And if Zeke keeps his filthy net off of him
Plus he's a cool guy to hang out with, which makes all the difference.
Tom's been playing real well lately. Lots of long strings but also working on harder stuff each session.
As for me, I'm just working on improving endurance & consistency with lots of BOP strings. Getting a few good strings a session, usually, good being over ten contacts of easy guiltless. Still inconsistent with some things - lately butterfly & symp mirage have been fluctuating wildly from session to session. And I'm working more flip pixie & whirls into my game and my practice sessions. The goal is to drill enough to get consistent with my guiltless fundamentals, but switch it up often enough to not get bored.

Only three sessions since the last update. Work and weather have joined forces apparently. I'm gonna try to get Captain Lou Albano as my tag team partner, then we'll settle this at Wrestlemania, while Whoomp (there it is) by Tag Team plays in the background.
Angry session June 3 w/Tom at Merrimac park
it was fucking cold
maybe three strings weren't terrible
osis> crispy dlo bs
Tired session June 5 solo by the lake
symp mirage> butterfly> pdx mirage> rpt x15 sets
plo> symp mirage> rpt x10 sets
plo> symp mirage> rpt to 10 contacts
bubba bs
I had never even tried bubba before. Kinda surprised that I hit it within five tries each side.
When I play solo I just want to get away from people and not get distracted and not feel like I have to keep people's attention. But somehow, groups of people kept finding me, and watching me drill. So I'd stop drilling, and try to do some easy strings. I guess its more the pressure I put on myself to not look like a clown than the pressure that those people actually put on me that keeps me from continuing with my drills when people are watching.
This session was a little under an hour, I was exhausted.
Welles June 7 - freestyled solo but Ronnie & Zeke (and I think Scot? Not Davidson) played net over yonder
this session? also cold
pixie ss clip> osis> pdx mirage> rpt x20 sets
pixie ss clip> whirl x10 sets bs
pixie ss clip> whirl> infinigy> whirl x5 sets bs
So I'm approaching drilling a little differently. Each solo session I'm just going to work on one or two of my weakest components or components I most want to improve.
Just battling tired-ness and this miserable weather. Yesterday was pretty nice in the evening, would have loved to kick for just a little bit even though I was exhausted, but I had to come home from one client and work for another remotely. Totally wiped out by the time that was done. I'll be playing a lot this weekend I bet, as long as the weather holds out.
Something a little less bitchy than the rest of this post:

This is my favorite band to kick to lately. A lot of their lyrics have to do with finding the motivation, energy, or inspiration to keep working your ass off just to get good at what you love. I had an idea to make a video to this, with the obvious theme being five add tricks or tricks with the add value that matches the counting in the song. You can have that idea modified. All yours.

you listen to heiruspecs? nice! i saw them live in madison a few months back, really good
also, is your blog title a simpsons reference? I remember there being a newspaper clipping or something with homer shaking his fist at the sky: "Area Man Yells at Cloud" or something.

I'd take Abe Simpson over Cloud if I absolutely had to choose. And you know what else? I never finished FF7. I played to the end of disc one, but my brother loaned disc two to a friend (or took it over to a friend's house to play or something) & never got it back.
Oh, Holly... how did you find that picture of me in my Charlie Manson/Furby shirt/sweat pants/air guitar phase anyway? My second most embarrassing phase... Hope your busted transmission doesn't keep you from visiting Chitown sometime this summer like you were talking about.
So I've kicked a little since the last update. This last weekend was Windy City Cup and Blues Fest. Cool things happened at both, and I'm glad for that, but it was too much to try to do. I don't know much about the Blues, but I know that I don't like what I hear from the main stage of the fest. I don't know much, but I know I love you. I don't like crowds, and I don't like drunks, and I especially don't like crowds of drunks. Fuck it, there's a lot I don't like, I'll just stop there.
Session recaps.
Millennium Park Friday w/Tom
flip pixie was pretty reliable - paste bsos, pixie ss clipper bsos
whirl practice seemed to be paying off
good string length
We also crashed some circles and tried to freestyle at the fest itself.
Tried to play at the cup on Saturday, I gave up after about half an hour because I couldn't hit anything. Don't know why. Went over to the fest with Tom & met up with Jordan & Eric from Bloomington, Indiana, but couldn't hit anything over there either. Jordan hit outside datw> whirling swirl> whirling swirling dragon. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiick.
Sunday watched the Cup all day & got sunburnt. Left there and had a solo session in IP. Decided to work on ducking clippers.
ducking clipper> pdx mirage> rpt to 13 contacts (same drill x15 sets)
ducking clip> ducking clip x10 sets (ducking from clipper, which is harder for me than ducking from toe)
cross body rake first time both sides then bsos
Oh and some drunk dude & a mom & her kids joined me for some circle kicking... exactly what I was trying to get away from at Blues fest. I was gracious to all & encouraging to the kids, but I'm glad this was at the end of my practice. I hit inside kick> ducking butterflyer and did a quick freestyle demo for them.
Monday I was at work pretty late, but did get to squeeze in a solo session.
ducking clip x25 from strong clipper, x50 from weak clipper
osis> far cross body rake x5 from strong clipper, maybe x3 from weak clipper were clean
Hoping to get more practice time in. I've got to keep my skills sharp if I'm going to defend my 2nd place in intermediates at Midwest regionals title

Had some more sessions since the last post.
Wednesday June 17, solo by the lake for about an hour & a half - was pretty tired but glad I stuck with it, second half of the session was pretty solid. Worked on infinities a little bit but mostly focused on ducking clippers, 50 on weak side, 20 on strong. Also hit osis> ss crossbody rake on one side.
I wasn't paying any attention to this thread, just sort of skimmed it. Guess I picked a good week to learn rakes.
Thursday June 18, solo by the lake, maybe a little under an hour. Infinities & ducking clippers again. DATW x5 both directions both sides. My session got interrupted by a work-related phone call & couldn't get back into it afterwards, too tired to warm back up.
Saturday June 20 at Welles with Tom, Zeke also stopped by. First hour was solo, worked on DATW, infinities & ducking clippers. Hit ducking clipper back to back a few times. Reid challenged me to hit 6 ducking clippers back in the day, I'll get there soon enough.
When Tom got to the park we pretty much were just doing short combos & individual tricks, mostly because of the heat. I hit some new stuff!
whirling cross body rake both sides
flip dyno
pixie muted cross body rake both sides
Sunday Zeke & I played some two square at Welles. He won the first two games, I won the third. They were pretty closely contested games, in each of the first two I had pretty good starts but Zeke just came back & overpowered me. Zeke had a lot of really well placed shots that I thought were going out (so I didn't put a kick on them, though I probably would have reached the bag) but landed in.
Then somebody Zeke knew randomly bumped into us & told us about Peace Fest, so we eventually biked down there and crashed some circles. Found a couple good hackers, one circle was really fun.
Monday I had a little unexpected time to kill so I had a short session at Independence. Pixie ss clipper bsos 15 times. Had a 16 contact guiltless string & then worked on consecutive osii, got to 8 a couple times.
Still trying to work on one or two of my weaker concepts every time I solo. Might throw in a long run session just to check where my stamina's at. That's about it.

good highlights, sounds like things are coming together right? seems like it from what I read.
up above, did you mean that you hit 5 DATWS in a row, like a string of 5 of them? on both sides and in both directions? either way it's impressive, but if this is what you did, you're my new hero
time for a new witty title to your blog btw

Nope, you'll have to hang onto those lame heroes of yesterday, I was doing DATWs individually. Although last night I did hit flip inward DATW> op toe> outward DATW> op toe> flip outward DATW> op toe> inward DATW> op toe> footed flip inward DATW. Which is about as consistently bothsided as I've ever been with that trick.Rieferman wrote:up above, did you mean that you hit 5 DATWS in a row, like a string of 5 of them? on both sides and in both directions? either way it's impressive, but if this is what you did, you're my new hero
Yeah I'm feeling positive about my progress so far this summer. Getting to the stage with flip osis where it is as consistent as any of my other three adds was really important. I'm not really sure how I feel about June, like I haven't played enough or something. Still positive, just wish I had something really great to point to.Rieferman wrote:good highlights, sounds like things are coming together right? seems like it from what I read.
It is time. Unfortunately, most of my wittiness these days seems tied up in mean-spirited & sarcastic comments on facebook that I delete instead of post (usually).Rieferman wrote:time for a new witty title to your blog btw
And since we're having this heart to heart, lately I've been trying the "Bob Riefer method" of posting on modified - just not getting involved in threads that turn into silly ass pissing contests. Which is every new thread. And there's always one person at the center... hmmmmmm...
Well since I mentioned last nights session I'll put up some notes then I'm out. The park was crowded with an open swim & basketball going on in the fieldhouse, and two softball games, a sprinkler setup for the area kids, and the regular soccer games (practically every night). Batteries died on the portable speakers at the beginning of the sesh & there ended up being so many distractions.
Some kids had gone crazy with sidewalk chalk before my session. Like just piles of crushed pink and yellow chalk all over the place. Friction reducing materials all over my shoes and bag were probably not helpful.
So, when I kick at Independence, I'm on the sidewalk in front of the fieldhouse. The sidewalk is made of 6 foot by 6 foot (or maybe even larger) segments, three across, so roughly 20 feet of room to walk. The row of sidewalk farthest from the fieldhouse has trees planted every third segment. I play in between two trees on the far side of the sidewalk. And yet, somehow, people still manage to walk straight at me. Why the fuck a person going from point A to point B is going to choose to draw that line through trees and a strange person flinging their legs around is a goddamned mystery to me, but it happens about every ten minutes. Then again, just last night a woman just started walking through the infield in the middle of a softball game. Real genius on display. Also there was a brawl in the other softball game, and some kid broke a window on the field house.
This basically my biggest pet peeve about Chicago - there's so many people who need to share the available space, and yet so many people are terrible at sharing it. And you've just got to fight and push every time you're on the CTA, every time you're in a crowded park or a festival, just for the measly scraps, the measly inches.
Ok... so... deep breath... make a spreadsheet... footbag... worked on infinities & consecutive osii for a warmup. Did individual DATWs x5 outward both sides & x10 inward both sides. Pixie ss clip> osis> pdx mirage> rpt> run x10 sets. 15 contacts guiltless was the longest out of these strings. Feel like I didn't do very much considering how long I played, which was over an hour. Think I would've played better if I could've focused more.

Thanks guys. I'm glad you enjoy it.
Had five more sessions since the last post.
Friday June 26 - solo at IP, much more focused than the last time. Worked on pixie ss clipper> whirl.
pixie ss clipper> whirl> osis> pdx mirage x10 sets, repeated a couple times
pixie ss clipper> blender one side
pixie ss xbod rake bs
ducking clipper x3
ducking osis bs
Saturday June 27 - drilled solo at IP.
butter> infinity> osis> pdx mirage> rpt to 20 contacts
drilled pmc> infinity> osis> pdx mirage, repeated at least once
drilled pmc> whirl> infinity> osis> pdx mirage but didn't repeat
I was having problems with whirl on my left side, setting too high. Also flip pixie wasn't reliable midstring.
Sunday, kicked with Tom downtown and then at Welles. We walked through Taste, but it was dead so we moved over to Millennium Park by the fountain

I had some good four or maybe even five contact toe-to-toe run starters, bops & bop equivalent tricks felt good, but had a hard time with whirls. Felt good about how I was playing, but the foot traffic and people's general spacial retardation overwhelmed us & we moved to the Bean.

We were then asked to leave. So we ate & headed to Welles where Zeke & Ronnie were playing net. I grabbed my two square court on the way, which enabled me to lose badly in three games against Tom. Tried to freestyle after that but was pretty stiff & drained of energy. We got some horchatas from Garcia's & hacked in the courtyard for a while after that.
Yesterday I kicked solo by the lake. Still doing infinities & DATWs as part of my warmup almost every session. Flip inward DATW is very awkward, I might have to spend a week on it.
whirl> infinity> rpt x25 sets; best was to 12 contacts
The first 20 sets felt good, but the last 5 were kinda sloppy. My right hip was pretty sore afterwards.
And today I kicked solo by the lake after getting off work. While trying to stretch out my right hip, I tweaked my left knee.
15 or more infinities a couple times
schooled PMC
PMC> infinity> osis> pdx mirage> rpt to 16 contacts> 6 more contacts guiltless was my best run
20 flip smears
10 flip pastes (pretty rough when your pixie knee is tweaked and your pickup hip is sore, or else I would've done more)
5 swerves on each side
butter> infinity> osis> pdx mirage> rpt to 19 contacts
Really excited about this weekend. I hope this helps everyone get in an appropriate 4th of July mood:
