Worlds 2009 circle finals - Vasek epic run (now with HD)

Based on the footage I saw...

My favorite circle offerings were this string by Vasek and a density string by Olaf.

I really appreciate how Olaf stood out, like he was genuinely trying to push himself and not just actively engage in shuffle, littered with a hard trick before the first drop and then shuffle until they felt like there was enough length that they could take another risk. I thought this was how the event was supposed to actually be in first place, and not just a more interpretive form of RR.

I feel that Vasek did an amazing job of handling the enormous hole that exists between string length and content. By calling everyone's bluff and obliterating the standards of fluff he could then go on and concentrate on the class of shred that CC delivered in worlds 2007 and 2008.

On the one hand I am grateful to Vasek for putting things back into perspective. On the other hand I am still more impressed by the shorter, denser, unimaginable runs that he (later on) and Olaf pulled off.

Everyone does that in Circle variety round. The format of the comp is to blame here.

Agreed. The rules very much reward players for hitting a longer easier run over a harder shorter run. Indeed hitting something like ripwalk>whirl repeat seems to my understanding of the rules to be a better combo in the variety section than hitting blurrywhirl>blurrywhirl.

There's absolutely no benefit in hitting multiple component moves when you can hit each component seperately instead, and there is little benefit in hitting hard links.

As a judge it was kinda difficult to keep track of what Vasek was hitting... At around 100 contacts I just stared at him in half-hypnosis and sweating like a wild boar myself.
I need to add that it's true Vasek had a lot of Butterflies in that epic run, but on Density Phase (last three rounds) he had altogether 104 contacts of which 2 were BOPs - which is bloody dense.
I'm not 100% sure of the numbers though, I was sort of counting BOPs from everyone. Steve Goldberg was counting overall contacts.
