day 2 of health kick, so far so good
it was SO HUMID in the barn when I was shredding last night that there was a dark circle of sweat all around me. So I had to take lots of short breaks between practicing, but I got the practice in anyways.
edit: hopefully electric will be finished next week, so I'll have my lighting and my AC (and tunes and fridge and TV) in the exercise room. because playing in the heat wave ain't fun
Consecutive ripwalk practice went well. No new record, but my legs were bouncing nicely, and my posture has clicked on that. I'll be getting 10 in a row in the near future hopefully.
hit 33 b2b osis. I'm sure that's a personal record, though it's really the first time I've ever tried to get a lot of them in a row.
diving clipper > ducking butter > ducking butter > ducking butter > diving clipper > ducking legover > ducking clipper > spinning clipper > short run
paradon > pdx mirage > paradon > whirl > dyno > torque > run
stuff like that
lifted afterwards. then to bed early.
my legs are bouncing right now. that's a good sign of energy returning (for 32 years, my legs have bounced when I try to sit still... for the last approx year, while barn building, no bounce... now bounce is returning... creeks and pops are already disappearing too)
today is the 277th day of quitting smoking.. I think I've got it down at this point.

Man, I tried to play outdoors yesterday in that heat and only got about 15 minutes through before I gave up. The heat and humidity were just way too much at 3pm.
Props on quitting smoking. Seriously, good for you. oh and nice drills there I guess
I can make a butter bag if ya want one in the future. colors matter?

day 3, still going strong. last night, I finished dry walling the exercise room (time consuming small pieces). Wife graciously helped out by priming the walls of the workshop. Ready for paint in there now. Ready for spackle in exercise room now.
tonight, hoops > shred > lifting (my electricity is still not hooked up yet, so I don't have my basketball court light.. so I have to hoop it first, else not hoop it at all)
---
ken, thanks for the props
I was pretty happy with those little accomplishments. Big enough for a player like me.
drew, I like that yellow and blue soccer ball style.. can we do one similar to that?
wyrmfyre - in my opinion, smoke til you're ready to quit.. cutting back is fine, but in my experience it just prolonged when my quit date was (I would justify continuing to smoke as "well, I'm smoking LESS, so that's enough progress for now"). I quit smoking cigarettes (was a pack a day guy) about 5 years ago. Then I started cigars instead - quit from that for 270+ days mentioned above.
In both cases, the only way to quit is to randomly select a future date as a quit date - say within the next 2-3 months... literally, just flip the calendar open, put finger on a date.. that's your date. Then, come hell or high water, when that day comes, no fucking excuses (oh, poor me, bad day at work.. boo hoo... or, my girlfriend dumped me... or, I'm going on vacation, I'll quit after that). No excuses!
You stop on that day, you feel like total shit for several days, and off you go.
I also find it very healthy to track the days as I've done.
You'll most likely gain some weight if you quit. It's ok, because after awhile, you'll truly be able to exercise better and the weight will come back off on its own.

day 4, still going strong. last night, it was cooler but still hella humid, so it was a sweat fest in the barn. But it was a fun session.
my weak paradon has become my strong paradon. Which isn't a bad problem to have because the other one was pretty darn good already. Now they're both good. But, the whip through dble dex motion has really clicked (not as much thinking required to do the trick).
Hit all 10 barfly that I tried on my strong side. Scratching my head as to how that's even possible considering I think I've hit that trick like 20 times total so far. Weakside, not so much (did hit it once on that side out of many more tries).
ducking/diving combos again. Getting flowy on that. Annoying when I miss.
Thanks to Drew for noticing that on regular style swirl, I was not giving myself any help with my support leg (i.e. the set and dex were done entirely with the dex leg.. support leg didn't bend at all). On strong side, the advice to use some support leg to launch the ball, and then dex, has helped quickly. Hit lots and lots of swirls on that side. On the weakside, it's still like brushing your teeth lefty, but I did hit 5-10 regular style swirls over there - I believe those were my first (non-symple) on that side.
Some mid-run atomic practice. ehh. Just got to keep at it.
---
wife has been doing "jillian michaels" workouts for a few months now. All I gotta say is "thank you jillian". I've been noticing, but last night really noticed, my wife is buff (edit: "buff" means "really in shape") like before she had our kids. Nice, go me, hot wife.
ha ha, sorry, TMI I know.
---
wife and I are working together to finish up the barn. She's basically going to be the painter, I'm going to be the mud and tape guy (drywall finishing). She'll finish painting my workshop tonight while I apply first coat in the exercise room.
edit2: here's pics of wife and workshop before the primer coat. Temporary workbench.. none of my stuff in there really, no shelves built yet, no paint yet.

day5, still going strong.
spackle and painting last night.
Meg finished painting the workshop - we weren't aiming for perfection, it's only a barn workshop. But the color in there cleans it up /brightens it up enough to make a big difference. Now I can begin building countertops and shelves and getting stuff to its final resting place in there.
I taught myself to apply drywall tape. My technique will undoubtedly be perfected just as I am finished with the task. That's how it always goes. Someday in the future, I'll get to do all of this again and I'll be really good at all of it. ha ha. Anyhow, got one wall taped and decided to call it a night so I can check out my work in the daylight today and see if I need to make any adjustments before I do the rest of the room. Novice spackler = lots of sanding usually. I'm hoping I can avoid some of that.
Gonna shred tonight for the first time as a 33 year old.
edit: hoping to get good spackle progress this weekend, some shred, and at some point my electrician is supposed to come back to finish shit up.

you're one of 6 people that said happy birthday to me
boy, worked hard/played hard this weekend. Fire pit parties with the wife and neighbors on both Friday and Saturday night. Both were fun, both kept us up way too late and had us way too tipsy. Also, got the pipe in for drainage trench, got all the taping and mudding of screw heads finished (2nd and 3rd coats to happen this week), and had an amazing trip to Morris Arboretum (awesome tree house and train exhibit.. beautiful setting.. kids LOVED it).
No footbag except a short session friday night before the party. I'll play several times this week before I do more spackle work. I should have a painted/finished exercise room by end of the weekend I think. Or close to it.

i'm up to day 9 now I think, but the weekend of birthday partying didn't really help. Whatever. kicked last night. damn, I need my electricity hooked up proper so I can play in the actual shred room with AC on (whereas right now, I only have good light in the garage bay.. and it's HOT in there). Fun. Just generally playing clean, and trick density is improving, drops are decreasing, both sidedness is becoming pretty damn even, and I just feel in good control.
Actually, I think that last point is why drew might have felt like my game is dialed back right now (whereas I would say, it's actually better than it's been) - when extremely controlled, stuff looks easier. I dunno, just a hypothesis.
Today is my 8th wedding anniversary. Still think my wife's really hot and cool, so we're doing really great. Hoping for another many years.
Tonight, I'll break my health kick so we can have a glass of wine together after the kids go to sleep.

kev, I'm just happy to see you're playing a lot of hacky these days. So many people get too cool for school or whatever and stop playing. Which always boggles my mind, because it's freaking fun game to play. (and especially when it's a guy like you that can hit shit I'll only ever be able to dream of).
I'm considering two things for the exercise room.. .
One - I may want to do P90X. It's a boot camp style of workout regimen. I know several people that have tried it. All of them say it's very rigorous. The ones that have stuck with it are just absolutely buff. Toned like crazy, strong, energetic. The tricky part is sticking with it, because, it's very difficult.
Two - Wii. The wife and I think it would be really fun to be able to have Wii bowling parties, or to try Wii Fit (for her). And I think the Wii will act as a DVD player - which I will need for playing the P90X DVD's, and footbag DVD's etc. - it kills two birds with one stone.
Thoughts on either of these? Anyone? Anyone? You there, in the back, with the yellow shirt... Yeah, you.

Shredded with Brian last night for the first time in ages. He had injured his shoulder bike riding, but he's back now. He's about the same as he was before, but maybe better string length, and some new flowy stuff coming in. I, for the first time in awhile, felt fast/quick and on the road to being decent at this sport again. I know I've said I'm better now because of improved both sidedness etc. But last night it showed nicely. Stamina is an issue still as I have weight to lose yet, and because I'm still burning the candle at both ends as I finish the barn. But overall, I had several nice strings, was able to do some of my harder drills, and was as both sided as I am in practice. Most notable improvements are pixie and spinning. I didn't miss much of either all night. Ducks/dives are improved too. It was fun

wii fit is actually REALLY helpful, especially the newer one, ive heard. i used the older one (older as in like came out in the past year) and its pretty amazing, it helps track your progress really well, and you can use it to work out a suprisingly large number of muscle groups.
i also feel like its easier to stick with than a conventional excersize machine or workout regimen because it keeps track of your entire profile, such as how often and for how long you use, calories burned, BMI, and pokes fun at you if youre getting fatter or not using it enough

I'm "done" barn building. Well, there's actually really very many projects to work on, but all of them are of the "do them whenever I feel like it" variety. The place is fully functional now.
Here, I have a lot of floor space, nice low pile carpet. This is an 8 foot x 12 foot area. All my exercise equipment folds up out of the way so I can shred here.

Here you can see the entertainment center with TV and surround sound stereo. In this picture you can also see one of the infinity speakers hanging from the ceiling. Mini fridge filled with cold water and beer.

And when I'm done working out, I can sit down and rest my weary bones.

well, back to footbagging last night.. no more interruptions are planned for awhile. knock on wood.
playing in my new shred room was AWESOME. Really, it was better than I could have imagined. The flooring was perfect, lighting is amazing, the room feels comfortable and bright and cozy all at once. The tunes were blaring. Afterwards, I lifted while watching baseball tonight on TV. When I was thirsty, I grabbed an ice cold bottle of water out of the mini fridge. It's great. I think it's the nicest place I've ever played actually.
No highlights really. Just knocking the rust off, trying to get un-bloated for Funtastik this weekend. I'm going to suck at this tournament. But I guess that just means I need to start going to more events.

boy o boy do I love the shred barn. love it. did you guys notice the pics above? don't be shy, I spent 8 months on this sucker, would love to hear from you
really though, playing in there is so awesome. i put in 45 minutes last night. I'll soon be up to an hour per session. and I feel fine today. subtract barn building from your life, and it turns out your body heals pretty nicely. When I stand up, it doesn't hurt anymore. Already creaking and popping less. Legs are back to bouncing uncontrollably when I sit down. Yay! And the space is just so fun to play in. Everything I require in my ideal shred spot is in place. I wouldn't change a thing.
Anyhow, just shredded and kicked more rust off. I'm definitely 60% of back to normal. The other 40% is mostly consistency and stuff that will return as I get skinny again. But it's good enough to not be embarassed at funtastik this weekend.
And I really want to get good now.
I did my first ever clap pushup last night after shredding. Maybe that's easy for everyone, but for long armed, 200 pound guys, it takes some doing.
