Does anyone have any advice on stitching bags for net? I have some Alcantra, which is very stiff and if it breaks in will take an awful long time to do so. I would like to make one really sweet net bag out of it though for the weekend sessions me and Jamie have.
All and any advice is welcome, especially with regards to the choice of filler. I have done some investigating, but hints and tips seem far and few between
I have a footbag that's good for net. It's a vintage 8 panel. Tightly packed, about 30g~40g probably, the stitching is pretty tight. I've used it a lot, and one of the seems busted so I had to restitch it. The filler was just normal plastic pellets. Like these:
I got it at BurgerKing or something when they had PokeMon with a kid's meal. I took the cotton stuffing out and put different filler in it. It's hackable now.
-Really strong and thick leather that won't bust holes. Smooth exterior recommended.
-Really strong thread (floss won't work, I think).
-Have EXACT templates/panels at hand.
-Nerves of steel.
-Hands of steel.
-Fill the bag past its holding capacity, with plastic pellets. Maybe 110 - 120%.
-Sew every seam EXTREMELY TIGHT.
-Make sure your finished product is extremely round.

i can just second waylon here. he´s right. i tried to stich a "net" bag to play golf with. i used very soft leather, stuffed it very full and broke a floss seam on the first kick.
so strong thread is realy recomended, tho i havent broken a thread on that bag since.

I have not made a net bag but I do make my own footbag golf drivers which from what I understand are about the same.
I recommend a 12 panel (all pentagons) design as it is very round and there is not allot of seams. I would not go any less. You could go more but it will be more work for no real benefit.
I use marine vinyl as it is very strong and thin. It done not really "break in" that much. It will break in some as the stitches level out and the vinyl settles, so pack the bag a little extra tighter than you want.
I use upholstery thread, it is very strong. Sew all the seams tight.
I use general plastic pellets for my drivers and some times add some bb's for extra weight.
Now im done pimping my first bag...
