I thought that this would be the most appropriate place to post this.
We are in the process of uploading a kilowhack (that means lots (or a thousand whacks if you want to get technical)) of old footbag videos to the Fourkast website and I am wondering what the footbag community would prefer. I am basically starting my nonHackrifice YouTube account (kinda classic-ish videos from the past to present) from scratch on the Fourkast website. I have a LOT of videos, so I want some input as to what I should make available to you guys/the world. Here are some options I was debating between:
1) Upload only the best of the best, or the most... significant (of course this would be from my personal judgment)
2) Upload EVERYTHING which includes the best of the best, ranging to, say, a 2-second clip of some kid hitting "my first ripwalk" in his basement (along with 20 other videos of this new player's first tricks). Or, maybe a 45-second clip of Ryan Mulroney from ages past.
3) Somewhere in the middle: basically, the best videos, plus maybe, like, one video of a new player instead of all 20.
Also, how significant are competition videos (ie: routines, shred 30) to people? Do you like to see them from every event no matter how small or how big? (I don't personally care for competition footage.)
I'm asking because I'm pretty sure there is no limit as to how much I can upload, but do people want to have to weed through thousands of videos of new players? Are they worth watching? An example could be, well, I have clips from when David Clavens started playing; in themselves, they are just like any new player hitting a few ripwalks, but because of where Dave has reached today, it's neat to see where he started. The same could happen with any new player posting his/her ripwalk videos now.
I'd make a poll, but I'd rather hear rationale behind a vote, so I'll leave it up to replies.

I personally, think the "Somewhere in the middle->best" is most appropriate. I mean, sometimes it is nice to see David's first barflies in his garage, but it isn't exactly in high demand, I watched them once when you posted them in your video update thread, and never again. However, the 10 videos from David's .org account with Strassman's basement, Johnny's "tri johnny" etc might not be "best" but I think they are definitely worth uploading. I think also, for "fourkast" it would make it look a bit more professional to have great footage for all to watch. The new players first ripwalk can get as many views as it needs on youtube, I would think.
Also, for competition footage. Personally, I study, map out and try to drink the routines from past players. Sometimes I find it really annoying, when for example I can't find Honza / Vasek etc's Quali / Semi routines from something, or the dropless routine Jorden did at USO 2006 [was that it?]. I'd absolutely love a competition archive that is well done.

I believe my videos are going to have their own section, so it will be semi separate from the "professional videos" on Fourkast. Keep in mind though that any user can upload any footbag video to the website, so whether I post newb videos at all won't really affect that, just perhaps the quantity thereof.

In my opinion somewhere in the midle is something pretty good.

The real crucial question here is "who is primary going to watch these videos?" what is the goal of having footage on this website? Would you consider to "link" entries with videos from youtube? Remember, on youtube many more ppl will be able to watch videos. Also, is the idea to post "amateur" footage which is fine but will have another image on the sport and is thus again associated with question number one, the target. Another point is that there is already footbag.org. Any possibility to work with them?Do you want to split the plattforms hence making it maybe a bit more difficult to get access? And think of copyright regarding musical elements.

I'm not sure if I completely understand your YouTube linking question. But from what I understand, yes, we already are linking videos from YouTube. The ones that "admin" has been adding -- King of Footbag, Flash in PTown, etc. Which is all nice and dandy because, yes, then the wider audience of the entire world can see them as well as the audience on Fourkast. But there are two issues I can think of with this:
1) If something happens to YouTube (IE: Vimeo becomes more popular and it just disappears along with all videos) -- doesn't seem likely, but I'd rather invest a lot of work into a footbag website run by friends
2) Do we really need the world to see footbag? Just because I am uploading a bunch of videos doesn't mean that other people will stop posting to YouTube. They won't. BUT, the majority of videos I will be posting will be for US, footbaggers, and not for the YouTube world. I'd personally rather not comments like, "your gay lol faggotfaggot" on every video I post.
And I guess your answer then is that these are geared towards a footbag audience. This is particularly crucial for the archiving of players' videos who would rather not be seen on YouTube (some of everyone's favourites) -- I am hoping for a user-only section (additionally) for players who don't want to be featured on YouTube in short shorts and no shirt, potentially affecting his/her professional life.
As for Footbag.org, Steve made his post questioning this exact thing on .org. I have tried to volunteer my services at .org before, but I find it poorly run, since it is 99% Steve who doesn't have time to baby everyone who wants to help. Which therefore resulted in my incapability to help. Red is eager to have video archives on Fourkast, and I think that will also bring a lot more traffic to our website. I will also be eventually uploading old VHS tapes (with video makers' permissions of course) -- this is another thing that non-footbaggers are not giong to interested in. Unedited 2-hour long hacky videos from the 90s? Umm, really....

Thanks to Erik for gathering information on the video subject! A quick couple of bits of input on the video stuff : )
In regards to how much footbag video should be out there on whichever site; from a promotional aspect, the more the better. The more outlets you have people plugging in to watch video, again the better for our sport. This is simply more exposure to help the cause. Steve G. (one of my mentors) of course pondered the question of the fate of footbag.org's video section, I firmly believe that is a light that should never go out. Erik is right however, Steve doesn't have the time to do everything, that is where the rest of us come in.
On the topic of youtube; it is a great video exposure area, and is great for promotion to the average person. The drawback that it has is that footbag videos can quite frankly be lost in the vastness of youtube, simply saturated in with the millions and millions of other videos covering every conceivable topic. I am in the process of writing an non footbag specific article (to be posted elsewhere) about the saturation of media online (both print and video). A good example for videos; a person comes across a video of Vasek Klouda performing an amazing routine. They dig it, then click onto the next link saying 'Man balances cat on coke bottle'. From there, the viewer clicks on another 20 unrelated videos. Just like that, footbag is gone again. Youtube can certainly be ADHD. Now, that an average person saw the video once is great, this again is more exposure. But again, good videos can simply be lost in there as it is non specific to footbag.
Another good example is that recently I was sent a link to an amazing footbag video on youtube. It didn't show up on modified or the social networks, and there were very few hits or comments on it. It had been out for a year, and hardly anyone saw it. Quite simply, lost in youtube. We should always have places that are purely focused on whatever they are promoting (whether they are footbag videos, skate videos, or so on). As Erik put it, this is what Fourkast TV is on the Fourkast site; concentrated easy to access footbag videos (which we will constantly be promoting). The great thing is that it doesn't have to come down to choosing one place to upload or another; the more places people can plug into watch footbag video (and of course upload), the better. In Fourkast's case, if you upload to youtube, you can simply link that over to Fourkast. It actually will create a unique page for your video on Fourkast, which originated from youtube.
Last note; with uploading directly to Fourkast, the risk of the links changing is a lot less than other places (ie, less broken/dead links or deleted items). You can trust the video link is always going to be there, unless something really forces us to change it. Anyhoo, thanks to modified for the input and linking (a good amount of traffic to Fourkast has been sent by modified). This forum and the people on it are really the prophets of getting the word out for freestyle footbag, and are a great source for input. Props again to Erik, who is now our chief video guy at Fourkast. Much appreciated for letting me put in my two cents!
