Hey,
I'm curious to know what people use to play footbag on. I hear a lot about shred mats, and wouldn't mind looking into getting some. Any recommendations, words of wisdom, or other information?

I think these work well as long as you put them down on a surface with enough friction, like concrete, and not like a garage floor

that's not what he meant, I don't think. Planet footbag sells "Footbag Shred Mats" that are designed to shred on. I've heard that they absorb alot of the shock on your knees, increasing length of play; provide friction for your shred-shoes to grip onto, increasing level & safety of play; and create a designated spot from where you try not to leave, increasing cleanliness of play & your form. They sound good to me, but they're expensive & I don't want to have to lug one around... They're prolly wicked at jams and tourneys though.

A Friend found these mats at a garage sale for around 5 bucks. Fletcher Funk has the planetfootbag mats, and paid some oddly high ammount for them, but these are the same mats, just blue.
If you dont want the Planetfootbag or the getrung, I would look at Big 5, Sportsmart, or other random places (target, walmart). You may not find individual 2x2 foot squares, but collectively you may get a good 9x9 square or more.
I'm not really a fan of the big puzzle piece mats. They really don't have much spring. So while they are soft, they make it harder to release off of them. Kind of like trying to jump as high as you can off an old mattress, it just doesn't work very well. I'd try to stick to the thinner mat that gives you support in the way a shoe insole would.
