before moving to LA became a reality I was really looking forward to coming to the boston jam. . sucks I missed it. Do you know if some filmage was conducted? That'd be ill.
highlights from the jam? Props for competing, too!

Heh, thanks for all the comments guys.
Pete-thanks for the encouraging words.
Mike-you're a liar and/or thief.
Pat-Footage was taken, but Fran has it all and it's all in HD so if I wanna edit it I have to go to the library and do it and it's so far away and I've been sick and I'm a huge exuse-maker and procrastinator so maybe you'll see something in a month if you're lucky.
Kevin-ya fathah
Matt-I actually didn't do too much. I would've liked to have been more of a help but Pete seemed to have things covered pretty well. He did a great job running the whole thing.
Bob-You dirty, dirty man.... Sucks you couldn't make it, are you still coming to Boston in the future?
Okay, so session. First off, today has been less than awesome. I don't like to complain (I love it) but the whole day has just been so... bleh. Anyway, I've been feeling better so I had a session today. And it was good.

-pixie ss pickup x3>paste x3>rpt first try
-spinning ducking osis bsos first try
-whirl war 9 contacts

-tomahawk b2b!
So yeah, decent come back session (actually I also played Wed. but I was still sick and didn't hit too much). I doubt I'll play very well at Montreal, but that's okay because I've never been there before and it should be fluckin awesome regardless.
It's good to play again.
Peace

Thanx for asking Kevin, Montreal was lot of fun. I should have done a write up but it feels so far off now. Aw well, I'm sure I'll go back and maybe have more to say next time. In any case props to the Montreal crew for hosting such an awesome jam!
Anyway, I haven't been playing too much this summer. I've had maybe 5 solo sessions in the past 3 months. In Boston I mostly just played with the BSC and here in Rochester I've had a few 2 man sessions with Matt. Come to think of it I think I've only seen Chris and Mike once this summer. I did however go to Toronto and play with Erik Chan and the FAT crew as well as NJ where I played with Jordan Zuber, John Goode, Jordan Alejandro, and Ian P.
Toronto was a lot of fun and it was great to see some old friends but it was early in July and I still wasn't very motivated to shred so I played like absolute crap. However we went to some restuaraunt afterwards (wish I could remember the name) where I had a really good wrap and then after the meal the waiter brought out little bowls with a small amount of water and what looked like a piece of lemon inside and then proceeded to lay a npakin on top of each bowl. I just stared at it inquiringly and I guess Erik saw the befuddled look upon my face and started laughing at me. Turns out it was just a wash bowl for your hands.
New Jersey was another fun trip. I went down with Ian to party with my cousin and his friends at my shore house and the shred was like a bonus. Before going down I hadn't played in a few weeks so I knew I'd be rusty, and Ian hadn't played since the Boston Jam, so he was really out of it. Jordan A. suggested a park we play at and it ended up being one of the best places I've ever played. It was a huge pavilion with outlets everywhere (good for music) surrounded by tennis courts, a basketball court, and a playground. If Forked River ever decides to throw a jam I would highly advise playing there. Anyway, we ended up playing for 4-5 hours which did a number on both Ian's and my legs, but it was worth it. So much fun.
Anywho, I just had a solo session today and hit a really good string (for me) and planned on posting just that in my blog, but it looks like I kinda summarized all the footbag stuff I meant to write about at one time or another.

I actually stole most of it from Zach Jahners blog.
I pretty much just copied most of his drills cuz I suck at thinking up my own. Hope you don't mind Zach! (given you even see this)

So I was supposed to have a session with Pete and Ben Little today but unfortunately they both had to cancel due to work and lack of gear, so instead I had a solo session which was probably better for my game, but not as fun... still pretty fun though. Worked on atomic for the first half hour, mostly just linking into and out of stepping moves. I never thought I'd ever hit rubberman but after todays session, I'm starting to think otherwise...
-blur>atomsmasher bsos
-legbeater>blur bsos
-atomsmasher b2b bs (footed bsos a few times)
-legbeater>ripwalk>blur>rpt
-smoke>dlo>rpt>genuine string (maybe one osis) ending in ps whirl
-swirling same toe>same foot reverse swirl (stolen from a christmas calendar video where Jay and Johnny hit this)
I had a few good random strings too for when people were walking by. Actually at one point I was in the middle of a drill when I heard someone murmur something about "playing in the tunnels" and I glanced over and saw a uniform. "Ugh, damn security" I thought, so I abandoned my drill and decided to hit some easier, flashier tricks in an attempt to impress this person of authority so as not to be kicked out my spot, and midstring I hear them say "You havn't missed a step have you" and as I performed ducking clipper b2b I said "Nope" thinking they were talking about my ability to keep the bag in the air. Eventually I dropped and looked over, hoping to see a look of such astonishment that not only am I not going to be kicked out but will be given a key to the city that can open any door!...
Turns out it was one of my friends from freshman year.
I guess he switched majors and is now in criminal justice so his co-op job requires him to wear a security uniform. Now I realize when he said "you havn't mssed a step..." he was talking about the fact that I was still playing hackey sack, since I used to play in the common room during freshman year. Just kind of a funny story.

So, first post of 2010.
I turn 21 in two days. Exciting. As for footbag, I've been playing really well the past few sessions I've had. I haven't been playing as much as I used to simply because I'm living in an apartment now and there's no good place to kick when it's so cold out. However, this seems to be a benefit as my legs feel more powerful when I play nowadays. I feel like I had a lot I wanted to write about earlier but now I'm just drawing a blank, haha. Here's some highlights form today's session:
-ps whirl bsos
-twirl bsos
-mobius bsos
-ripstein
-pdx whirl x6
I guess there weren't too many highlights actually, just some good feeling strings. There should be a video out sometime in the near future so just look for that.
Peace

Nucleus review from a somewhat mediocore shredder.
So far I've had two sessions in these shoes. Once with Pete and a solo session just now. My first impression: Fuck. My second impression: Fuck, I'm tiltless again. I think these shoes are going to be very good for training in, but when I go to tournaments and group sessions I'm probably going to bring lavers.
The thing with the nucleus shoes is that they require a very precise style. The clipper is a bit different from what I'm used to with the laver since the spot I normally catch the bag with on the laver is curved up a little so the bag doesn't slide off the side of the shoe. However, with the nucleus, you have to catch the bag closer up toward the toe since the part of the shoe where the foot arches slopes downward. Maybe this is how the game is "supposed" to be played, but since I've been playing for about 3.5 years, I've developed a certain clipper game that just makes it rather difficult to play at all consistently in these shoes. If you know anything about my game then you know that I'm a bit spin heavy in my strings.... It took me about 45 minutes to hit spining clipper>gyro clipper>rpt. So frustrating.
The toe. Ugh. Fuck. Fuck the toe so hard. I hate the toe (if you can't already tell). I've never cut off the walls on my lavers. Call me old fashioned, call me elitist, call me an idiot. Whatever. The toe box on the nucleus is so god damn small that there is absolutely NO room for error at all. In the session with Pete I dropped the bag about 5 times in a row just trying to drop the bag on my foot from a hand toss.
In today's session I tried drilling my mirages and it took me way too many tries to hit miragex3>ss miragex3>rpt.
Okay. Now that that's cleared up, here's the good part. The shoe breeds proficiency. The clipper really requires you to delay the bag and not rush through tricks. Once I realized how to stall my clippers, osis became a much more simple concept than it ever did in lavers. With lavers, osis took me forever and a half to learn simply because I did not know where to catch the bag and would rush the set afterward. With the nucleus, it was very apparent where to catch the bag and really requires you to wait before setting the bag after completing the osis. This is good because it makes you set the bag straight up instead of out in front of you, which is a bad habit of mine in lavers.
Also, when you catch a clipper in the right spot, the bag sticks very well. It is only unforgiving when caught near the arch of the foot. Despite the fact that the clipper is so different than what I'm used to, I think it will be very good in the long run and help me delay the bag longer, which is the main hole in my game at the moment.
The good part about the toe... Ugh. I hate the toe so much. HOWEVER, I realize that it will help in slowing down my toe game. Since the toe box is so narrow you have to really concentrate on catching the bag BEFORE going on to the next trick. I think this will really help smooth out my toe game since I tend to rush through any toe trick that doesn't involve pixie and legover.
Anyway, that's my review of the nucleus so far. Once again, if you happen to read this and think "Hey, fuck you! Its a breakthrough in footbag technology!" remember that I'm only a mediocore player and my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.
Besides I don't HATE the shoe. I'm just very very bias toward lavers.
Peace

No shit! So does that mean you'll be attending the Greater Rochester Area Shred Symposium? Cuz that would be the dopeness
.
Awesome session today. 5 people and it was in the 50s so that meant OUTDOOR shred! Summer can't get here fast enough. Anyway, lately I've been playing in nucleus shoes for all my sessions, but today I switched it up about 30 minutes into the session and went back to my lavers. First reaction to putting lavers back on: WIERD. The shoe felt so much larger and wide open. I could catch an osis where ever I felt like.
It was great. I think using the nucleus has definitly helped my form because today I hit a bunch of new tricks (thanks to Kevin Hogan for the inspiration).
-stampede
-grifter from clipper
-pdx grifter
-flux
-matador>ps whirl (new link)
-sumo
-flip blurriest
-blurriest bsos
-10 genuine toe tricks (although 8 tricks involved a pixie set
)
All in all good session. Everyone was going off. Kevin H. is getting ridiculous with nuke set, Lassar's fairy set is textbook, Pete was hitting 6 and 7 add moves all over the place, and the new kid, Tristan is really starting to dial his butterflies.
I just want to play in lavers all the time now! However I do think the nukes will help me progress.
Peace
