not to take away from this vid, b/c it's rad & robots are cool, but is it time for Rippin' Run to evolve?
i feel the event needs a reward for taking risks.
every unique could add a contact to the player's string for each component over 4? ( unique 6s add 2 contacts, unique 5s add 1 contact, etc. ) so the player who plays it safe could still lose to a player who may drop first, but indeed had a more Rippin' Run.

This was how Rippin Run was first designed when the event started. Bonuses for bigger tricks and subtractions for BOP's (doing 3+ in a row). The great thing about Rippin Run is that you have an instant winner, no video review, and no waiting for scoring. This is what killed the Bonus/Subtraction method, before you could say there needs to be evaluation the announcer is usually saying that the person who dropped last has already won (my experience). This event also needs to have contacts counted, because people shred at different paces. Especially long runs like this, the person shredding longer could still have less contacts. This was the case when we went back and reviewed the historical Ricky V. Peter Rippen run from back in the day. Peter went longer but had BOP's and I think their contacts were really close, because Ricky was shredding a little faster. So really in that case, Ricky dropped first but won. But try explaining that to an audience of 200+ who don't really understand footbag. This event was really designed for audiences not footbaggers. A straight forward event that everyone can understand, who ever "battles" longer wins.

Myself as well. Here is my version:abstract wrote:i feel the event needs a reward for taking risks.
Each trick is given a unique value based on the product of 4 components, and then divided by four.
These are the unique components:
A: first consecutive trick in form of adds (or other)
B: second consecutive trick in form of adds (or other)
C: third consecutive trick in form of adds (or other)
U: total number of unique tricks
LS: left side
RS: right side
First trick of the run: (("A" • B) • (("A"+B)/2)) • U
Middle of the run trick: (A • "B" • C) • U
Last completed trick: (A • "C") • (("A"+B)/2) • U
Any immediate repetition is deducted one add (or other), but cannot go below 0 adds (or other).
Given x: add number (or other)
Code: Select all
DDD-DDD-Barfly:
A: (x)
B: (x-1)
C: y
So, "B": ((x) • (x-1) • (y)) • UCode: Select all
DDD-DDD-DDD:
A: (x)
B: (x-1)
C: (x-2)
So, "B": ((x) • (x-1) • (x-2)) • UExample 1:
(LS-inf.) - (LS-inf.) - (LS-inf.) - (LS-inf.) - (LS-inf.) - (LS-inf.) - Drop =
Code: Select all
((3•2•2.5•1)/4)+((3•2•1•1)/4)+((2•1•0•1)/4)+((1•0•0•1)/4)
+((0•0•0•1)/4)+((0•0•0•1)/4) =
((15)/4) + ((6)/4) + ((2)/4) + ((0)/4) + ((0)/4) + ((0)/4) =
(3.75) + (1.5) + (.5) + 0 + 0 + 0 = Example 2:
(LS-inf.) - (RS-Dinf.) - (RS-dyno) - (LS-twirl) - (LS-rip.) - (RS-rip.) - Drop =
Code: Select all
((3•4•3.5•6)/4)+((3•4•4•6)/4)+((4•4•4•6)/4)+((4•4•4•6)/4)
+((4•4•4•6)/4)+((4•4•4•6)/4) =
((252)/4) + ((288)/4) + ((384)/4) + ((384)/4) + ((384)/4) + ((384)/4) =
(63) + (72) + (96) + (96) + (96) + (96) = This demonstrates that one run is approximately 100x more worthy
Clearly pros would have their scores truncated in a notation in keeping with the current standards. Possibly scientific notation if it proved to work. The scoring mechanism would be a fun project to program. I would be interested in trying it out sometime. I could build it easily in max/msp, but C, JS or Java would be a project.
There's totally no need to change Most Rippin Run anyhow. As someone said it's a competition for audience, not for footbaggers. It needs to be easy to understand for non-footbag people. And it is! You drop first - you lose. I think Shred 30 is definitely enough if we want a formula-based technical competition. I've never looked at Rippin Run as a serious competition because it's easy to "cheat", like playing Butterfly > Butterfly > Paradox Illusion > rpt all the time. And because of add limitation Toe players are in worse position because they need to perform much more dexes than Clipper guys. But it's not a big deal. This competition is just for fun
