Post by norek »

Hello!

I would like to present one of the best shredvideo ever from Poland (maybe the best? - yeah maybe, "The 50 drills" was better  :P )

Starring: Gielnik, Norek and Wilku.

Drum'n'Bass and hardcore shred!
Enjoy.

Footbag has become so tech, it's boring. I liked the rakes, it was nice change up. With that said, you guys still ripped the fuck out of it. Triple whirl is insane.

Amazing video. Gielnik's huge move and game is so badass and stylish. Wilku's string in competition shows an incredible amount of restraint, discipline and mastery.

Norek is totally a robot. Sickness in general.

Why break the motions down? It's triple whirl just like clip set double pickup is not a whirling ss pickup and barfly is not pdx illusioning ss butterfy (ss rev whirl) even though you could see the motions in the trick. :)

Oh my. O my golly. Aaaaaw dang. That was dope. Thanks. This video makes me want to play footbag right now, and I love videos that do that. It is like you made a great video to watch, you showcased some tight tricks, and you motivated me to go play. Thanks.

It is just my opinion, but any trick that involves a triple dex with one leg should be in a class of its own or some sort of super move. I feel if footbag was a video game, the one-footed triple dex would be similar to a "finish him" in Mortal Combat, or something that would show a special video game scene to emphasize - he just did that - and you are going to have to put the controller down for a second because you know your eyes just opened up a little bit larger than normally, and basically you just got smoked. Nice.

Polska jest najlepszym z footbag ( I know it has a special name in Polish, but I am not going to try to spell it )

I really hope you three will be here in Portland and San Francisco this summer. I have seen how many Americans have made it to the couple of tournaments I went to in Europe, and I feel that Poland should have twice as many players that come over here. You guys seriously deserve it. Good luck. It is my prerogative that you experience the best that we have to offer in Portland while you are here. :)

The vortex swirl was amazing too! :) I have always wanted to hit a miraging swirl.

great stuff guys! LOVE the intensity. triple whirl was so clean and awesome. Can't wait to play with you guy again. Wilku's style is looking really nice and smooth, and Gielnik looks like Peter Irish in this video, especially on ripwalks and RW.

This triple whirl vs whirling muted ss miraging muted ss whirl question is interesting. Many aspects of the debate are interesting. Since I have a hundred essays to write, I will procrastinate and give some thoughts.

1. Why break it down? Because it makes it much easier to replicate. I remember playing with Ales Zelinka and he was working on his furious sets and he said that it's not double miraging, it's symposium whirling miraging/quantum. For me at least, as soon as I started thinking about it as a symposium whirling set I could hit the set. Lots of moves are like this for me. Flurry was another one - not a double miraging dlo, but a whirling ss dlo - although when I started hitting downtime flurries I started thinking of it as a downtime barraging legover, so it changes. Breaking moves down to the micro level is, I find, helpful to understanding not just how to hit them, but the best way to hit them. The nerdy intellectual deconstruction of footbag moves allows you (or at least me), to develope new and better ways of hitting them without even trying to hit them. I figured out how to hit downtime blenders, for example, using my brain and not my body (but then I had to teach my body how to follow the theory I constructed). This is an entirely practical argument.

2. The other interesting part of this debate is the kind of subtext that seems to be lurking just under the water - that whirling miraging whirl is not as clean or as "pure" as triple whirl. Nobody's said that, and maybe nobody intends it, but I think it's something that many people would be thinking anyway, even if they deny it. It's certainly something I think about a lot of moves - if you say you're hitting something and what you actually hit is not that move but something else - a big example for me is cross body rakes, most of which aren't really cross body because the half spin negates it, you're not doing the move correctly. You're still hitting something, but it's not your intention so it's no good. One could imagine a "pure" triple whirl where all three dexes are leggy dexes on the outside of the knee. This seems impossible to me, but I've stated footbag moves as being impossible in the past and been comprehensively proved wrong, so who knows. Of course in this instance we also don't explicately have Norek calling it triple whirl, although I think it's a pretty safe assumption that he does. I certainly would.

It comes down to fairly intangible debates about value related issues. I don't think there is a clear right and wrong answer about it. I think with a lot of moves the "pure" version is so hard, we are justified in accepting the less pure. Most swifters are stepping muted far swirls - which, without the swirl you probably wouldn't call a drifter. I don't have a problem with this, even though these days, as proven by this video (and some others), people are definitely hitting genuine downtime drifter swirls.

3. Is this triple whirl or whirling miraging whirl. Answer; It's both. The nomenclature in both instances tells us what it is and the distinction between those moves at such speed is so nuanced that I think it's acceptable. Breaking it up is useful, and I feel now like I might be able to come close to hitting it. Without breaking it up I doubt I would get close. Highly technical, somewhat metaphysical discussions can also be useful in developing the sport and the language to discuss the sport.

I am in a cultural geography mode :P
