This looks fantastic Zeb. I have a lot of respect for people who take the time to do projects like this. It's this kind of thing that really keeps footbag progressing. It is really hard to come up with a working system and I think this looks really good. It's also obviously also taken a lot of effort, so thanks for that
.
With things like this, I don't think "perfection" can be achieved. There's always going to be problems and exceptions with any kind of ranking system, so I don't think it's even worth worrying too much about many of the points people have brought up, unless they offer a workable solution as well.
I don't think the possible bias towards areas with more competitions is a bad thing either. It encourages people to hold more competitions, and North America really has no excuse for having less than Europe. In most sports, if you want to be considered the best in the world, you have to go to the biggest and best competitions in the world.
I think some people need to realise that systems like this aren't attempting to rank players on their intrinsic abilities. Vasek, David Clavens, Jorden Moir etc. may be the most skilled players in footbag, but this is a ranking of the best competitors for the footbag year. This also a quantitative system, not a qualitative system, which is surely the only way you could have such a system as well.
One thing worth thinking about is the weighting between tiers. When I came up with a ranking system a few years ago, I had an order of magnitude difference between each tier of event. This meant that there wasn't a limit on how many events you competed in, but winning worlds was 10x better than winning European Championships, which was 10x better than winning Finnish Championships, which was 10x better than winning some small jam. This means that you can look at the results in terms of different resolutions - competing in smaller events only changes your ranking compared with people who you're equal to on a bigger stage.
I also gave the score to each event based on the ranks of who was there competing, rather than an arbitrary score for that event - so if next year's world champs are held in Hobart, and nobody from outside of Tasmania competes, I might be the world champion, but I wouldn't be the number 1 ranked player in the world. Of course that's an extreme example, but it's clearly more of an achievement to turn up at a small event and beat the top ranked player in the world, than to turn up at a larger event where the top ranked player isn't competing and win.
These kinds of systems can run in two different ways - they can be for an award at the end of a set time - such as determining the F1 driver of the year, or you can have a system that is a running score from the last 12 months - which is what they do in cricket, and I think Tennis and Golf? So you never have a point where everybody is on the same score, but once the 2010 Worlds is held, the 2009 worlds results are no longer part of the score etc.
Just some ideas anyway. It already looks really good, so I don't know if you need to change it much. Great work too, and thanks

Jeremy, one thing you mentioned i disagree with, so I think I'll chime in. Most of what you said I agree with.
". . . it's clearly more of an achievement to turn up at a small event and beat the top ranked player in the world, than to turn up at a larger event where the top ranked player isn't competing and win."
Made me think of this counter:
If Vasek goes to a tourney in Colombia, where only 5 other freestylers compete, Vasek's presence should not significantly impact the tournament "level" or the number of points a players gets for placing. The reason I believe this is because if I get 2nd place, well . . . I just got 2nd place out of 6 total players. 2nd place just wasn't "hard enough" to achieve based on the presence of only one good freestyler.
Tournament level is most accurately determined by the number and presence of multiple high-level players and/or number of players from diverse geographic regions.
In non-related news, Zeb, does this system only allow for 3 events to count toward one's annual score besides Worlds? If so, how did you decide on 3, and not 4 or 5?

yes, making a cap of 1800pts (if a player gets first in the 3 events) I chose 3 as a test, it could be more, who knows i'm just testing the system lol

awesome work zeb! looks really good!
if an individual has competed in three 3rd tier competitions, and in their 4th does better than one of their other events, is that updated so that it's always your 3 best 3rd tier competitions? or is it just your first three 3rd tier events? does milan have a chance to get up to 1800 if he wins the next three 3rd tier events he competes in?
i think it would be great if you could show the events that the points were won in. That would be sick. it also lets us see who beat who in certain events.

well i added the excel sheet, it has all the tournament that player has done in the year, and bolds the ones that are used in their ranking.
so to answer your question....A player can only use 3 of his tournaments towards his score, so, if Milan were to do better at a tournament before worlds he could very well hit 1800
. So it would be whatever tournament or jam better benefited that persons score, not necessarily the rank in which they achieved at the event.

excel is like broken or something right now, so i cant accurately update it as much as i would like too. So until i can figure out whats up with it, ou can atleast see the results from the nyfa and what they did the the results.
but heres something to think about..
once this is updated, Milan is no longer in first
