Phillip Merritt: Footbag Progression

Post by Nox »

I did this when I learned to juggle and I thought it was pretty interesting so I decided to do it again.

Month 1:

Hopefully I will be hitting around the world and mirage by next month. Oh and I just got my lavers today so I was hitting all of this beforehand as well.

Theres not a lot to go on in this vid, however I would suggest trying to play on your toes more. When setting the bag, ome of the power of the set comes not from the setting foot, but from the support leg itself; something that may become more apparent to you when you start to learn how to clipper. Theres nothign wrong with toe stalling the way you do there, and Anssi demonstrates the differences in his new vid ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSGYzNm3OV8 ) but learning to play with the so-called "Magic Hop" now will pay dividends in the future.

Other than that, keep it up, and remember that the three most important rules in getting better at footbag are

1 - Practice
2 - Practice and
3 - Practice some more :D

Edit : Also, try to film so we can see all of you. 90% of footbag may be in the legs, but your arms and upper body do a lot to keep you balanced. Being able to get the full picture so to speak will help others to give you advice.

Ya I didnt put much time into this vid (i just wanted to get it in before i go to oregon for a week) but the next one will have a way better angle. Matt Cross told me to start working on those types of toe stalls. Im starting to see the need for them while attempting mirage.

So I visited Portland, Oregon this weekend and I happened to run into cale and some other kickers. I thought it was pretty crazy seeing as how this forum isnt that big. I got one of Cale's bags and this thing is awesome.

Ive been practicing atw a whole lot recently and ive im landing it more and more frequently so im getting pretty stoked about that. Inside stalls are coming in real nice besides my flipside, but I was expecting that.

Mirage is giving me a lot of difficulty. I just cant seem to get my foot down fast enough to switch feet and catch it, any tips?

Hiya Phillip, right now I suggest that you focus on setting the bag straight up in front of you, without it traveling out away from your body. Work on alternating toe stalls standing in place, back and forth between feet. Mirage will be so much easier after you get this part down.

very cool idea on doing a video progression. keep up the enthusiasm

youll hit all that stuff with more practice. its been said, but staying on your toes more and setting the bag straight up will help out a lot. definitely work on stalls and the rest will come in time.

Thanks for the help guys. I can do consecutive toe stalls fairly easily but they can probably still use some work.

The inside stalls are getting to be more fun now that that my muscles are getting use to the movement, like before I could barely get it up high enough to catch it after the stall haha. Im hoping to be doing clippers in next months video.
