Man I can't believe I'm solidly considered an "Old school" player... fuck, I can't believe I'm considered "old" by some of the new baggers! I've had a lot of time recently to really read over peoples posts and their tricks and such... these new school footbaggers are just stupid. Jays posts, Anssi, others, I dunno, it's a completely different generation of footbag player, they can hit tricks and links that are just plain stupid.
I've been kinda jealous; I wish I could reach a level like that, but I know it's not possible. Not because it's impossible, but it's all a question of how much you're willing to dedicate yourself to something, and I just can't dedicate the time needed for that level. Besides, I've learned too many bad habits in the past form-wise to be able to progress.
Luckily, though, I can always remember that there is no monopoly on combos, and no monopoly on style.... I'm an ultra-competitive kinda guy, so it's the only way I can comfort myself in the face of some of the stupid shit being hit nowadays. Anyone read the finnish tournaments request contest? I can't believe people made it past round 8 and stuff, let alone 13 or 14, those combos are insane!

I feel ya gramps, but tis true, STYLE IS EVERYTHING and you gots it BRO.
Colin and Mathieu and any other MTL hacky slacker, I will attempt to make myself available for shred as much as possible, it's just hard with work and everything, just don't be afraid to call me up randomly and drag my ass out for a sesh, you should all have my number: 514-924-8485
But yeah, capoeira has taken over

Had a sessions today.
First of all, fuck my new lavers. I just can't get use to them. Also, i have serious doubt about a bag i received recently. I hope it will break in well, because for now it's not the best i ever used.
The first half of the session with my new laver was pretty shitty. On the second half i putted on my old lavers and worked on my flip spinning clipper. FINALLY, I figured out what was wrong with it. Now It is pretty good, it should be as good as my strong one soon!

Today Sebastien, Me and some nets players made a demo in a HUGE festival for children. Probably more than 1000 children. Our spot wasn't so good, like in a corner where basicly no one could really see us. Still, we made some demos and lots of children played with us, espicially in the afternoon. Was cool to talk with the net players.
On my side, i'm just so sore to be able to shred these day. Hockey + footbag + tennis + 40 hours of restaurant is really hard for my legs. I will have to rest a lot before worlds. Still, i'm progressing, wich is cool.

Kicking tonight, should be good - I could whine about all the footbag I'm not doing some more, but that's old hat; Today's new hat has lots of disposable income but not much disposable time. Music stuff is going well, the studio is shaping up unbelievably fast... in fact so quickly that I'm overwhelmed by technology at the moment, there's too much new gear. Life sucked hard last year but this year has been a resounding rebounding success! Within just a couple months, the studio has seen:
- New Computer
- 2 new 19" flat screen monitors
- New M-Audio Soundcard (FW410 for those who care)
- New Mic with shock-mount (Rode NT-1A)
- New wireless keyboard/mouse
- New midi keyboard (Oxygen 49)
- New sounds to work with, due to 2nd monitor (Guru, Omnisphere, SynPlant, etc. crazy synths)
- Soft Gold Painted walls
- New Coffee Table
- New Plants
- New Bitchin' Fuckin' leather sofa
Man, I just feel so lucky that all these things that I had been wishing for years, I can finally get. It took until I was 25 to get my life in order, and it's great to see all the hard-work start to pay off. There's only so many years you can live like a college bachelor with roomies and shit before you start to wonder about the quality of your lifestyle.
Next piece of gear: AKAI MDP32 - Basically a software MPC, this thing is going to bring my beats to a new level.
And I've started singing and rapping! And I'm not so bad! While Johhny was over I was fucking around and came up with some beat I called "Johnny be Good", and over the course of the week I've recorded a cool hook on it as well, featuring yours truly on the mic. Very exciting, I'm so anxious to be able to do more recordings and expand my vocal capabilities.
If anyone is also interested, I run a well-worn thread over at soundclick where I do reviews of independent hip-hop, and it's been getting pretty big, with 80K+ views, if you wanna check it out, or send me some tracks to review I'd be MORE then happy to do so, I love new music!

That's all I got for now - gonna kick tonight then update, and then from now on I'm going to bring a change of clothes and my lavers to work so I can kick before work, or during lunch, or after. I'll be set like a step.

Sounds good. You still climbing with Alex? You're such a monkey. God I need new lavers; my old torn up blue ones just aren't cutting it anymore. Now that I'm relatively beefy money-wise, I REFUSE to wear duct-tape shoes anymore.. that's a pre-25 thing. Another sad note is that many of my tournament t-shirts are worn down to the point of being unwearable now. I haven't traveled for a jam for around 3-4 years now, but I'd like to hit a couple as a last hurrah.james wrote:You're still my hero
I'll drag you out one of these days, then beers on me.
Ah well what can you do. Weekend plans: Paint studio trim white, get all light fixtures up and running, paint studio table black, record record record record.
Still trying to get my radio show back...
June 24 2010.
Had a 1 hour and half solo session. I worked a lot on whirls and did some spinning clipper and flip pixies. Overall, it was a good session : for one of the first time ever, i feel that i start to control my whirls (finaly). I also, i'm getting used to my new lavers, i think they will turn out well. My hard work on flip pixie start to pay off a lot, i can do lot more now, it's nice! My flip spinning cliper i also faaaar better than before, wich i'm really proud of.
I mostly drilled; i hit those link :
Whirl-Ripwalk-RPT.
Pixie whirl-pdx illusion-RPT
Toe whirl-blurry illusion-RPT.
Whirl-Torque BSOS (easy for me)
Whirl-Drifter-RPT (easy for me)
My whirls are gonna be good enough soon to start to drill a lot of pdx whirls.
Dante, i will hit pixie whirl-blurry illusion soon just for you
.
Hope to play with montreal crew soon.

By now, i will use the new descritive system of Ianek when i will talk about what i hit. I think that once i will be use to hit, it will be much easyer then the present system. If i write something you might not understand, i will write the correspondance between the new and the old system.
Had a 1 hour solo sesh today. Guess what; i worked open (was pixie) and spinning clipper. Whirl were completly off today, so i spent most of the time drilling the 2 other moves.
Nothin really surprising, except maybe a MOBIUS second try? Since i worked my flip torque, mobius become much easier. When my flip spinning clipper will be better, i'll be able to hit mobius both side pretty easily i think.
Also, things are looking good for worlds. I will probably show up in a good shape, wich is a good new. I don't think i will compete; i want to spend more time shredding than thinking about the competition and the energy preservation.
Might have an other session tomorow.
See you soon all.

Played at tamtams with Ianek, Jean-Martin and Marc. My endurance was not super on today, but i managed to understand a new move : barfly and his variation from the toe. Even on flip side i hit some that were ok. On strong side it will not be long before i become consistant with it. It's cool. In 2 try, i footed 2 times pdx torque - pdx drifter - PS whirl. Once i came back at home i hit it first try huhu. A cool combo.
I'll keep practicing until worlds. I'm pretty happy of my game right now. Lots of things to learn, but hard work really pay off. It's cool to feel that way about footbag. So many people are frustrated with their game.
Tomorow is a day off, my legs need to rest!
I'm still debating if i will compete at worlds or not. I think intermediate routine could be nice, i will see.

I gotta hand it to the footbag homies for always looking out for a fellow bagger! Thanks to everyone for keeping in contact even though I don't really play anymore.
I'm still gonna get some new lavers but this is it, I'm pretty much retired from footbag now. AND, am happy to announce it! Not because I dislike footbag, very much the contrary, but I totally came in, saw, kicked ass, did what I wanted and now that phase of my life is done and I'm doing new things now. I figure I could just be constantly frustrated and disappointed, or just admit to myself that I'd rather do other things, shut the door, and look forward instead of peaking back guiltily all the time over my shoulder.
Next step: Become BAP beatmaker
Watch out world...

Had a session with Ianek, François and Marc (for some minutes).
It was cool. I played pretty well at start, then it get harder. No real highlights on my side, i just did the usual stuff.
Ianek hit nemesis both side. On one side it was definitly not clean, the other one was pretty much clean i think, mayeb a little bit ''the'', but still pretty good. Props to him. His string lenght are really better then before, it's cool to watch.
We played just beside all the net players, as there is a big net tournment in montreal this week end. With like Manu Bouchard, PT Lovern, Jeremy Mirken and all the montreal crew. It's huge in comparaison to freestyle... It's weird, i'm like in the wrong city to play freestyle these day haha. I feel we are like 4 or 5 players who are really playing, while there is something like 30 or 40 net players? they are super organized with lots of training session scheduled, they rent a gym in the winter, and all this stuff. While in freestyle i'm like alone on my island with some other i see sometime. It's weird. Still, there is Ianek and Seb that are really good and with who it's cool to have a session once in a while.
About my game, i don't really know what i should think. I'm good. I'm defenitly better then before, but i have such a hard time with some concept. I'm weird. I don't know if i spend too much time working on them, but i feel like some move that used to be super easy before (atomics sets, stepping sets, etc) are becoming harder. I might try to spend more time on them to make sure they keep a good level.
I will try to have 2 sessions tomorow. One in the morning, one a night. We will see!

Played for the first time in a week. I took a break for the whole week to let my knee and my back recover. I don't want to go at worlds with some injury... Anyway it was like 100 farenheit outside for the whole weeks with a looooot of humidity.
So i had a session with Sebastien today. I find out a part of the problem i had on my flip toe. I tend to set the bag forward, so it get harder for some dexes. I will work on that in the next few days, i'm confident it will help to fix a lot of things. I also start to figure out how to hit double around the world BS. It's good for me, as i have never been a ''double dexes'' guy. Still showing some progress in that department.
Hope to play with more Montreal players before worlds! I have not played a single time with Kolo and Julien since more than 6 months...
After the session i went down to see the Net players. The net scene is montrael is so hardcore. I saw Manu Bouchard and PT Lovern train for worlds. They are super dooper good haha.
Oh by the way, nick, At the page 11 of this blog you said :

. Sorry for doing exactly this with this blog hahaha.I find most blogs WAY too serious and boring so don't bother reading them anymore. In fact, most blogs have NO personality to them whatsoever. There are perhaps 5-6 blogs that I check out every now and then, and it's just because they are my friends. The Montreal blog is fresh and different, which is why people read it, I assume. When I try to write in here, I like to mix things up and not just put down basic lists or goals or say the usual blabber
Mat
This blog is a fun mix of posts about all kinds of stuff that we're all into - your lists are ESSENTIAL in keeping the footbag part of the footblog alive Mathieu! Besides, we need to monitor your progress so that once you're really good, I can brag to everyone about how I showed you tricks, was your mentor, etc. even if it's a lie
Not sure if I ever mentioned this but I'm going to make a t-shirt that says "You might be better - but I'm in BAP" Haha I'm sure these jokes are old news to everyone and noone really gives a flying clipper about BAP anymore, but it's nostalgic for me. One way to keep my link to footbag alive!
Beats > Beats > Recording > Singing > T-shirt (BSOS)
I hope noone minds that all I talk about it music. It's a big part of me now so I'd rather be genuine, as all of you players should strive to be
Get it?
Hey JDigges you pimp, thanks for looking out - here's the deal; basically, my beats are really going to be my ticket into making money with music, and so the game plan is to amass at least 20-30 completely finished, awesome beats for next year when www.midastouchempires.com goes live. I'll put them all at once so it's fresh, print the business cards, market like MAD and make some bread off of leases and exclusive sales! See, beats are an awesome market, because if you lease a beat, you get 20$ or so, the kid who leased your beat is allowed to use it for up to 2000 sales, which is honestly more then enough I don't know anyone personally who sells that many albums... maybe Matt Cross? I dunno.
Regardless, you can lease a beat to multiple people until it's sold. And rappers are coming out of the woodworks. So are beats, but the trick as in everything is to start local and have a human connection. I'll hit concerts, PR events, radio shows, studio openings, rap battles, etc. and pepper the city with ME, so that I become a staple. Mix that in with free beats, free production, recordings etc. and you have a small business starting right there!
Anyway, rant aside, I do plan on taking a bunch of little loops I've been working for a while and putting them together in one MP3 file, just to show some of what I'm working on. I'm pretty happy with the direction my music is taking and feel that it can only get stronger, harder, faster, longer..
Hope everyone had a killer weekend! Back into the fray now...

Yah would be cool to do some videos. I know Marc wanted to film me. I might buy a camera one day too. But i prefer to show what i do do at jams instead of posting tons of videos
. Only a matter of opinion. By the way, as i call you every week, im still interested to shred with you one day

I don't have much news - work work work rest rest rest be be be the best best best...
Actually I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but next year is going to be my wedding! We've officially saved up a G note and are in the process of booking the ceremony location (A cool art gallery) and reception hall (Lasala Rosa, an awesome all wood concert hall). I've known a lot of you guys for a lot of years now, and it would be my pleasure and honor to have you guys be at the reception!
Now here's the bait to make you want to come: Instead of MSJ next year it's gonna be the Montreal Wedding Bash!! What that means is that I'll be organizing an awesome jam for the time of my wedding, so that you guys will have an excuse to make it over: Sick jam, reception party which will be THROUGH THE FUCKING ROOF, trust me, followed by tam-tams or something. The only catch is that sadly I won't really be attending the event much, but it'll be my treat to set everyone up. Also, I won't be hosting that year, obviously due to the wedding.
The ceremony location is quite small and intimate so I don't think I can squeeze in any friends beyond my immediate family, but the reception... oh man.... the plans we have are unreal.
Tentative date: July 10, 2011. Stay tuned...

We had a session last week with Mathieu Gauthier in Joliette. We bascially played horrible haha. It was Seb, me and Mat Gauthier. It was super windy and we had so much trouble to control the bag. It was fun. The biggest highlight was probably Mat Gauthier hitting far torqur b2b. Props on that one. This is what i remember. Oh and bad point, i injuried my knee after the session... The next morning, i was barely able to walk. So i didn't play footbag for the whole week. I wanted to let it rest before worlds...
Today was my first session since my injury. My knee isn't too bad. No major pain. I played with Francois and Julien in a huge festival. I managed to have us a crowd. Maybe 20-30 people. It was nice. I hitted my usual stuff, no really highlight. It was just a nice session where we played for the crowd a lot.
I'm not exactly where i wanted to be for worlds. I'm realy more both sided than 2 or 3 month ago, especially on open sets. But my whirls and my flip spinning clipper are not where i wanted them to be. Still, it's ok. Worlds are going to be fun anyway, and i'm sure i will learn tons of things there. When i will be done with my job, i'll have much more time to shred, and i'll also have more energy... Wlaking 40 hours per week isn't good for footbag

An other session at tamtams today. First of all, my knee hurted so much today. I stopped to play after like 30 minutes. Footbag is fun, but not enough to get me injuried. Also, no more footbag for me until worlds. My body need to rest, and i will listen to it. As Jay said, one more week of footbag won't get me better, but a healed body will.
I saw a super cool link from Marc today. Gyro butterfly rake. Try it, it's really weird, but beautiful. It's awsome to paly with Marc. Suck a great guy. He is so talented in so many things. Just incredible...
Played with françois again. Ok, if i ever get a camera, i will make a video of him. 5 minutes of pure crazy things that you have never see... TYhe bigest force of Francois is that he don't know anything about footbag. He never look any video, he never goes on modified, he don't even know the diffrence between legover and pick up. But he can do anything.... I'm not joking. And he hit super weird stuff, because for him these moves are not weird. He just say : Hey, if my leg pass over the bag on that way, that would be cool. Let's do it. Anyway, i promise you i will do a ''Special Francois Video'' as soon as i have a camera. You guys (and girls) MUST see that.
Then, let's pray that my knees heal before worlds. If not, it will be a beautiful vacation in california!
