hello FunkyD. i see you've just joined the site, welcome! nice work on your first bag, i just wanted to point out one or two things from what i can see. good job taking shots of both the outside and the inside, that's very helpful.

when you start to use ultrasuede, you'll want to gather a bit more. since you said the stuff you used here was stiff, you can get away with lower gather to make it a little softer, but for ultrasuede bags you'll need more. as far as your knots go, it looks like they are all single knots. i would recommend doubling or tripling them to be safe. other than those 2 points, i think you're heading in the right direction. i can't wait to see more from you!

i also noticed that you live about 40 minutes away from me (nanuet, ny). if you're ever in the area i'd love to get together and kick. i'm 5 minutes from the palisades center mall.

. And when i make my next bag ill be sure to take your advice. As far as meeting up in NJ goes, im not quite old enough to drive anywhere (im 15), and my parents probably wouldnt agree to the terms haha. So i probably wont be able to anytime soon

Hey everyone this is my first bag with ultrasuede light (have made others with crappy material!) and also my first three stich and it came out exactly the size of a golf ball! I was hoping for some people to give me all the criticism you can! Thanks for the help!

Great bag. How many have you made total? Have you considered numbering your bags? I numbered every one I've ever made, and a lot of other stitchers I know have said that they wished they did it. If you use a sharpie, the number wears off in a few sessions anyway, it's just a great way to keep track as you number them.

Okay, so, I could give you the same advice I would give anyone... Work on your consistency. Make each pent exactly the same, and everything you do about the way you stitch it the same. The more you can do this, the better. It makes for purty looking bags.

That said, looks like you did a great job. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, if it goes up in the air when you kick it, it sits on your foot when you want it to (can't tell if it does this, but that's all about fill once you can make a soft round bag), and it stays together for a long while with good care, then it's a good bag.

Yeah I suppose I would be if anyone else played footbag here! Total I've made 3 two stitch 32 panel bags out of some crappy material and then this three stitch. I've made about three four panels as well.

I'm working on consistency right now as far as the pentagons go but I think I might still be gathering a bit too much?

Thanks. It plays pretty good but i think I could use a different filler ratio other than what's in it now. It's not too good for stalls but I think that's mostly because of the filler.

I'm definitely not going to stop stitching now! Once I get my bags consistent with a better fill ratio then I will take you up on that offer!

Since you mentioned it, it does look like your gather could come down a bit.

Read the part about the 50-60 70-80 rule that I use to fill soft bags for immediate playability.

Good luck! Can't wait to see what you come up with. With a little bit more practice, and careful attention to the tips given to you by those with more experience, you will be making awesome playable bags before you know it. I would guess that your bags will be in a whole other world of playability by bag 15 if you try hard.

Maybe think about throwing a number 4 on that 3-stitch bag and keep track! At the very least, I will be glad to see a number that goes with your progression. Your call, though.

Nice job on such an early bag. You seem farther along than I was at that point.

That's what I was thinking. Well I have now read those over three times and understand everything there.

A number on the bags is going to happen so I don't regret anything and also to see how far Ive come once I make more bags. Thanks!

I know it may not be choice filler but I used copper bb's as the weight and then poly pellets to "fill it" if you know what I'm trying to say.

On the left of the golf ball, from left to right are my first 5 bags. My first bag is unplayable but my 2nd bag seems like it will become a pretty playable ultra-mini. On the right of the golfball are my girlfriend's first 2 bags. The big poofy one with no gather actually uses the same pattern as my 3rd bag (random blue/gold bag) while her second bag uses the same pattern as my first two bags. (hmm maybe we could have avoided making 3 mini bags? don'tcha think??) I really like the feel of the gather on her 2nd bag, I just wish it was bigger.

I like these 4 bags real well. My 5th bag (red hexes/black-white pents) was just stitched, it should expand to a nice size with a little break-in.

my 3rd attempt at a 32 panel. The yellow/tan pentagons were also recycled from my 1st attempt. The white hexes went to the 2nd attempt.

The bottom 12 panel is one I just made.

Magus, I really like how you've experimented with different shapes! Do you have a favorite? I've been getting tired of the normal 32 panel and wanting to try a few other patterns...

I wouldn't really call it experimenting. More like progressing. If I could have sewn a 32 panel right from the beginning, I probably would have. But I started with 2 panels and just kinda gradually worked my way up. As far as ease of sewing and less potential to be lopsided(at least that's how it seemed when I sewed them), I like the 12 panel, the 26 panel, and the 14 panel(the one with hexes and squares. I tried the other one with big squares and small triangles/hexes, and I can't seem to get it to be round). I also came across a 6 panel footbag that's designed exactly like a puzzle ball. The panels were pretty much the same as the 2 panel baseball design, but with 6 much smaller panels.
