worlds 2011
so i have heard rumors its gunna be in finland, whats the word on the street?
A poll with all the possible locations would be cool.Anz wrote:

It's quite sure that Worlds will not be in Finland next year. In the FFA board we think that the WOC has been too slow taking the bids for next year and we couldn't make it the best Worlds ever if we took it now.
We want to make the best Worlds in Helsinki and that would be now possible in 2012 or 2013.
I'm not a fortune teller, so I can't promise this will happen, I'm just saying we would like to do it.
As Steve said, the body isn't even cold yet, so keep your pants on when talking about the next year.
As long as we're idly speculating about where we'd like Worlds, and since this speculation has no impact on where Worlds will actually be, I'd like to go on record as saying I'd love to go back to New Zealand or Okinawa for a week. Also, the moon.
Yeah -- Australasia or Japan would be so wicked. I hope that is down the road, as I'd like to visit those places anyway.C-Fan wrote:As long as we're idly speculating about where we'd like Worlds, and since this speculation has no impact on where Worlds will actually be, I'd like to go on record as saying I'd love to go back to New Zealand or Okinawa for a week. The moon would be awesome. I am pulling for NYC!!!
07-orlando
08- prague
09- berlin
10- san francisco
11-?
4years with no East coast worlds i dont think so!
Of course I was only playing for 2 of thlse but that is irrelevant.
If it is not in NYC, Boston, or DC I think Sydney, London, Paris, Rome, and Tokyo would be cool places for worlds. (although some would be so expensive and some have less than 5 players in their country/city)

As I understand it nobody has put in a bid or expressed any interest in hosting 2011 worlds. Finland made some inquiries and decided against hosting worlds in 2011 (or at least the Helsinki crew did), so it seems pretty unlikely to occur there. There was a rumour that Denmark, Switzerland and Canada were all considering bids, but I don't know anything about that.
A few quick notes about Worlds in Japan and NYC.
Japan
I don't see Worlds happening in Japan any time soon. While Japan has a very good freestyle scene, with lots of players, and lots of tournaments under their belt, Worlds in Japan would have the following problems:
1. It's far from both Europe and North America. So it'd be expensive for everybody to get there.
2. Once people get to Japan, everything else is expensive. So while in the past players have been able to shell out for an expensive plane ticket, cross an ocean, and then skimp when they got there, this would be a lot harder to do in Japan. Worlds in Japan would be expensive for the players.
3. Getting around in Japan isn't easy. Tourists are often surprised to find how little is written in English, and that most Japanese people aren't very good at English. But yeah, it would be a lot harder for players to simply get around, get fed, and figure out subways in Japan.
4. Getting the real estate to run net would be expensive and tricky. Beyond that, there are no net players in Japan, so that half of worlds would have to be run by an external staff.
NYC
I know NYFA put in a bid for Worlds last year. That said, I spoke with Barrett this weekend about the prospects of Worlds 2011 in NYC, and he said it was highly unlikely. Basically, they'd only do Worlds if they got a big corporate sponsor, and that sounds like something they're going to slowly work towards.
So yeah, while I'd love Worlds in Japan or NYC, neither seems likely for 2011.

While this won't fly for 2011, I'd like to mention that Worlds in Montreal for 2012 might be a possibility, if not 2012 then 2013. We have a great net scene, cheap places to stay, good weather and venues, and most importantly I'm willing to spend time and money to get the ball rolling. My fiancee would help, Mathieu GM seems ready to rock, and lots of the net players have TONS of experience in organizing this so I think we'd be able to do good.
Obviously this is not a bid or anything near it, just some enthusiastic comments from a footbag player turned aficionado turned old school struggling player again.
Gonna speak with some of the MTL crew and see what's up.

Maybe in a few years we will look at Worlds in Australia, but at the moment it's just not feasible. To make it worthwhile, we would need some big corporate support as well.
We are developing some good relationships with a few organisations though, so maybe in the future we could see something.
I'm planning on heading to Finland next year anyway, hopefully the Worlds will be somewhere not too far from there.

Are corporate sponsors really necessary?
I mean I haven't ever been to a worlds, but I've certainly been to and organised events that have far more people attending than attend worlds and I'm fairly sure require a much greater level of co-ordination and organisation.
The basics of worlds are just this;
1. Good competition venues.
2. Accommodation.
Although ideally event organisers could organise a lot more than those two things, as long as those happens the event should be ok. People attending would pay for their own accommodation plus the costs of the venue.
With something as unique as footbag, advertising is pretty much free because media outlets love to cover these kinds of events.
Insurance costs are an important part of acquiring a good venue, but not too expensive for just a week, and can be included in the player costs. It's easy to get t-shirts and clothing printed these days, and can take pre-payments to cover all costs.
Given the number of people who attend worlds, organising a host-hostel that gives a discount and probably even helps with transport to the venue would usually be really easy. If you just ring up the nearest hostel to the venue a few months before hand and say "I'm organising an event with 100 or so people needing accommodation," they'll definitely sort you out a good deal.
Most pubs and clubs can be booked out for large venues, and doing so, at least in Australia, means minors can then attend as well, and people can just buy alcohol over the bar.
Having done these steps, you've got a good venue with discounted accommodation close by, official apparel, event advertising, and a venue for presentations and player parties, and so far the cost for the event organisers is $0. If you then get sponsorship you can subsidise these costs for players, provide cheap or free food and extra advertising of for events.
Try the same event again with 2000+ attendees and international speakers with Islamic decrees calling for their murder and still no corporate sponsorship.

Well not really "for free," as I'm sure you'd know if you read my post. "For free," only as in the players attending would have to pay for everything, rather than the organisers.
But no, I have other non footbag things that are much bigger priorities for me, and I live in Hobart, which is a far from ideal location for Worlds. I was just hoping to offer some constructive general advice on how easy it is, in reality, to organise the basics of this scale of event in the hope that somebody would be inspired to put in a bid in their own city, because at the moment there will be no 2011 worlds, and I think that would be a shame.

Sadly it would take a REALLY big change of status for worlds to be in NYC next year!! I am playing mega millions tonight though!! realistically 2013 maybe 2012. No corporate sponsorship is not needed for worlds to be run, However it would be Hugely helpful in a place like NYC because everything here is usually about the almighty $$ and it is hard to get any good venues with spectators. I for one am sick of seeing all this talent and entertainment go unseen here and in other locations around the world. Maybe some of the trouble is that worlds is moved every year and by the time a local community warms up too it its over.
NYC is, in my mind, the place too try too go BIG it is the undisbuted media capital of the world. It has instant large crowds. It has thousands of large companies competing with one another too get recognition. Most importantly we have good club members who have energy too pull it off
