You have to be able to read between the lines when it comes to the news and print. Don't bitch about the companies that keep your precious internet alive and keep you in the free lifestyle that you have become use to.

Richard is correct, you must read between the lines. You must diversify your sources of news and FILTER.

T.V. and newspaper are not good enough.

Internet is great but "any 12-year-old with a computer can put up a webpage".

Internet is cool because it makes the "old guard" of TV news obsolete. Networks are hemmoraging viewers like crazy.
That can't stand the fact that their "captive"" audience is gone.

Radio demands that you THINK, but has to many commercials.
TV is just pretty faces and cool pictures. TV requires no thought.

to Richard:
Who keeps the internet alive? that part of your post confused me.

I thought I'd add an observation about those avg. circulations I posted for the most popular newspapers.

Notice how pitiful they are, when compared to the populations of those cities. Especially papers like the NYT, which are distributed nationwide(or worldwide)

New York has more than 10 million people ). And ONLY 1.1 million papers are circulating?

Are the old newspaper companies completely "irrelevent"? OR
do our schools fail so miserably that nobody can read anymore?

The "Arizona Repugnant" is the only real newspaper in town here. And it fucking sucks.

That's what a news monopoly means, you sit on yer ass and produce a rag, suitable only for lining a bird cage, and the advertisers have nowhere else to go.
But then USA Today bought the "Repugnant" and fired a bunch of people. Good. Now to finish my rant, I'll just trail off .......

I believe Richard is stating that although you dislike the media's portrayal or spin on the issues, at least they are bringing it too you in a fast and convenient format for you to enjoy.

The best way to take advantage of the media is to take from it what you need and look past the crap.

That is for you to decide each time you watch or read the news. For example on Fox (regular channel) the news achors are ready to throw Jacko in jail before a jury has even been assembled.

Well considering that every man in America even the snipers are innocent until PROVEN guilty, condeming a man on national TV in the media without proof or a trial would be CRAP.

I'm sure the owners of Fox have an agenda they need to get out, after all they are paid through sponsorships guaranteed to them based on ratings. They need the stories to be juicy and controversial, otherwise noone would watch. If noone watches, Fox doesn't get paid. Fox doesn't get paid, there's one less ferrari out on the highway.

You kinda have to be a smart viewer and see the spin for what it is, some rich guys personal opinion. Once you can do that, the news, between the lines as Richie stated, becomes more clear, while the hidden agendas and spin are just some fluff added in to push the ideas of some rich dummy or politically motivated group. In Fox's case it would be the Republican party.

I was watching the six o clock news that night to find out about the bombing of the british embassy in Istanbul, and the top story of the night on every one of the local news channels was Micheal Jacksons rape charges.

Dumb

I'm sick of Jacko, Im sick of Scott Petersen. The wall-to-wall coverage of these two cases is so boring and shallow. I won't watch any of the news channels now. That's all they show.

If a nuke detonated in Baghdad tomorrow, we would hear about it AFTER we hear about Jacko's stuffed animals.

Some news stations, however, go a few steps past feeding you bullshit. Fox News, for example, literally paints a completely distorted image of the world that would lead someone who doesn't get news anywhere else to believe that the United States is loved and admired throughout the world, we've found WMD, and the Iraqi people are accepting us with open arms. I've actually seen them CUT OFF PEOPLE'S MICROPHONES BECAUSE THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT THE TRAGEDY OF IRAQI CASUALTIES, cutting in with remarks like "but remember, we're therer to liberate the Iraqi people!"

As far as Jacko and Scott Peterson go, news stations are in business for one thing: to make money. They play whatever will get people to watch.
