I've been a bad boy lately but you will be seeing me (at kickass the very latest!)
I definitely want to have a few sessions prior to get in semi-shape.

Hey look at the love pouring in to this blog! :D

Ken, those are some good personal goals, and are the kind of things I would strive for were I playing... but I'm not playing. What's gonna kick my ass? Argh what the hell though, I guess it's an impossible to answer question, we all have different motivational factors. It's that...IT, you know, the fire, the passion, that's what's lacking. That drive and spark, you guys all know what I'm talking about. Mathieu certainly does! I feel really bad for Mathieu because man if you played here like 5 years ago you would have been in heaven, we we're sooooooooo into it!

Or is it like a candle; Once burned out, you can't re-light it?

I always thought jams would motivate me, but over time the concept of a jam has changed for me; You develop all these different relationships with the players, and for me, a "jam" is more like an unofficial family reunion. I'd rather have some beers and listen to people's stories and get caught up and just shoot the shit then kick these days.

[Random Rant]: The worst kind of schedule for me at a jam is when you look at they do something like:

9-11 - Breakfast at Tiffanies
11-12 - Getting to site and setup
12 - 9pm - Shred.

9 Fucking hours of shred?!?!?!
[/Random Rant]

You know what, if there was money in footbag I would try harder. It's certainly one of my main goals with music is to make a living off of it, and I strive every day to be better and better at that. When you're 15, you're not necessarily thinking about time spent vs money earned or how your time spent increases your chance at a successful career, but at 25 (26 in a couple days), every day counts. Money may not be a motivational factor if you're single either, but I'm getting married next year and I want to have the best possible life for me and my future wife! Once you start building something for yourself like that, it's definitely an issue. I'm not satisfied working for someone else for peanuts, as large as the peanuts may be these days. I guess that the entrepreneur inside of me speaking right now.

If dollars are points then I want a high score.

I want it all, brand new socks and drawers, so I'm ballin' every time I talk to yall...

Re-lighting the candle isn't easy. Its like starting an engine in the cold. You have to work and work at it, but once its started, it purrs like a kitten.

You can totally do both. :)

You can also advance in career and life, and still play a few times a week. I'm working 50 hour weeks on my feet, and still playing 4 times a week. If you still find joy in the act of playing and the rush of being active and pushing yourself, footbag can always be part of your life.

That's not to say its easy, especially to start the cycle....but I know at one time you loved footbag more than anything, and I bet that feeling is still somewhere in there. Don't worry if you aren't at the same level as you were before.....as long as you remember how to have fun playing, and be the best you can be every session, you'll fall right back into it.

Then again, if your passion for the game has faded that's fine to....eventually we will all move on. I just try to motivate people to play, as it brings me so much joy on a regular basis, and I want everyone who has played past and present to share that joy.

Looking forward to seeing you Nick, and any other MTL'ers who make it down to KICKASS. Should be a great time.

You're right Adam, when there's a will there's a way! That last post was a little bitter.... maybe I should hit some sweet combos to offset that?

In other news, me and Bailey will be going to try some Flying Trapeze with the Hurricane! We had chatted about it during the MSJ, but life kinda took us opposite directions and it didn't work out for July as planned. It's funny too, we had just been talking about this like a couple days ago and then BAM phone call it's Seb "come fly through the air with me" Duchesne. Yessir!

I'm gonna try and work on that symmetry article next.

Also gonna try and get my radio show back. I miss it :(

I really don't think a career will make it impossible to play footbag either

I work 40 hours a week
I take care of a baby most of the time at home, feeding it multiple times while home, and also entertaining her

And yet, I still get to play footbag

But it's defenetly not an easy task

Well to be clear, if working 40 hours at your job is your career, then yes, you can footbag and do your career no problem. However, my specific case is that I'm trying to build myself a career outside of my regular 9-5 grind, which requires hours of work on top of my regular hours. So, in a perfect world, my day would like like:

9 - 5: Work
6 - 7: Footbag
7 - 9: Music

And it's just too much. That's not taking into account having a life and a wife at all. The balancing act of trying to do 2 things outside of work is the tricky part, and of course given the choice I lean towards music. The other solution is one day working on footbag, one day on music, or finding other time, and then that's where the "WILL" kicks in.

Better hit the gym ol' boy!
I'm getting my gadbois membership for October, then it's no messin', straight flexin'.
Ever get your hands on the jazzmatazz series by Guru? It's great stuff.

I'M FEELING LIKE A SHRED TODAY.
I think I will try some fun big links at the end. Mathieu is getting too good I need to catch up!

Bah these allergies are killing me. I got told at work today that I spoke with clients with too much arrogance. Arrogance?!?! Arrogance would be like lecturing people about style while not even playing footbag! What the hell do they know about arrogance?!?!

Always sucks when you think you're doing a good job and then getting blindsided with something you had no idea you were doing.

KICKASS in 2 days! Fuck! Already?! I still haven't played any footbag, it's not fair! ARRGGHH!!!!

Ah well what can you do. I guess I'll judge and try and play a bit, but I'm really looking forward to checking out Princess street again. I used to live in Kingston when I was younger, for like 10 years. God I was happy to move out of there, but I still have a few good memories, like when I moved out.

Still playing guitar every day, like 2-3 hours in conjunction with beat making. Man it's so fun I could play forever and never get sick of it. Lots lots lots of new material, still not going to upload anything until I finish something though. I got like 500 great little loops, but it takes a long time to get a song out of a loop.

AND that's it for this random post!

EDIT: Funny picture time....

I just downloaded the entire Star Trek series. Epic.

I also forced myself to shred yesterday and the day before. Today is rainy but maybe I'll check out Gadbois...unless I hit the booze first!

Hmmm...not much else exciting for me...except that I might look into becoming a forest fire fighter. Badass.

KICKASS 3 - The Place to Be

Oh man what great times! There's nothing like a footbag jam to jar you out of the autopilot of everyday life and see things with fresh new eyes. I knew I wasn't going to be playing too much that weekend, but still it was an awesome jam where I got to see some friends I haven't seen in a while, all in one spot. My lovely bride-to-be accompanied me, and our lift was most generously provided by sporty spunky Emily, the more-then-friend of Master of Disaster James McCullough.

We left Friday evening, had some McDonalds to cheer us up for the journey through rain and darkness known as highway driving. I'm not sure about you guys, but there is something about taking a road-trip that just makes me want to eat the junkiest food available. I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's just an inner craving that I have that I refuse to acknowledge, and because it is so convenient when going on a trip, it just works out for the perfect excuse to partake of all that perfect food, just dripping with MSG and who the hell knows what else. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Anywho, after cruising for a few hours sipping rum n cokes on the way there, we finally arrive (most of us pretty trashed) to Gregs cool kooky pad and drop our bags and have just the craziest party ever. The music was banging, Greg's roomate Derrick is just the cooolest smoooothest guy and put on funk classic after funk classic, and finally I named him DJ Class aka DJ Kla$$, which seemed to stick. There was this incredible energy and everyone was just so happy to see each other and just have a good time. I ended up having a bit TOO much of a good time. My memory is sketch but apparently I turned into an obnoxious loud raving drunken lunatic.

My apologies to all those who had to deal with me being an asshole that night!

In any case I paid for it the next morning, holy shit.. I haven't had a hangover like that since, like, my teens. I was still so drunk when I woke up I was still an asshole, and I still don't remember the morning clearly. Still, footbag is the priority and ain't no way that'll stop me from chilling with the crew that day! We pack up and hit a little diner for some proper breakfast, most of which didn't stick with me long but looked delicious. Re-up and go to Queen's for some shred! The whole weekend was filled with college students running rampant through the streets, punctuated with a night-time crazy crazy riot type party deal, which I wanted nothing to do with.

The event is hosted in a massive, clean gym that's a little hot and slippery, but what the hell nothing is perfect. Kla$$ brought his equipment and was bumping some more fine tunes and made a perfect backdrop to the shred going on. I decided to explore K-Town with my lady at this point, figuring I'd get some shred in later. We did our thing and wandered back at around 3-4ish, sadly I had missed the circle comp. Ah well, fuck it, I'm here and should play, and strip and get into a polite 2 man circle with James, in which I proceed to drop every trick I ever could hit. Some people notice, come by, and the circle grows to 5, which normally bugs me but is fine considering how I'm playing.. we'll say it was 4 1/2 people.

Shred highlights
Mathieu GM - Haha I finally kicked with him after 6 months of constant phone calls, except it was in Kingston. Ironic! The little bastard can shred! Very consistent and comfortable with his tricks, nothing too hard stood out except for his stupid control of torques, for some reason. Blurry Torque > marius, WTF?!?!

Gregory Pegory - This guy goes HARD! SLAM! DUCKING WHIRL! WAM! SPINNING BLENDER! He's gotten into great shape and it's the best I've seen him play. I had a blast watching his intense shred punctuated then more blenders then sears housewares department.

Erik Chan The Man - While I didn't have the pleasure of shredding with him personally, I did see him throwing down some tough links and hard tricks. Reverse Montage like it's nothing, spins and wins, what can I say, this guys legs are like a windmill powering his way to victory. Much enjoyed what I say!

Unfortunately due to this being more a social event then a footbag one for me, I didn't see too much more. Myself I played horribly, but ah well, life goes on.

We rap up precisely at 5pm and in a surprisingly non-nonmoving-sheep-herd way proceed to pack up and head back to Gregs place for an evening of drinks, music, and banagrams! What a fun game, Tom Mosher had shown up with his game, and Johhny (an unexpected but well received late visitor) showed up with his as well, so everyone had a chance to stress the fuck out while building there little puzzles. My favorite to watch during all of this was Ethan Hawke, who kept insisting his name was John Baggi for some reason, get really intense into it practically shouting "GO!" every time he had a piece. Some people decided to head out to check the craziness happening outside and came back reporting more cops then students, flying beer bottles, and riot gear. Sounds like a blast but not quite my cup of tea, I'm more of a coffee guy.

It was a much chiller night then the one before, and eventually we all just drift to our various sleeping pads for the night. The next morning everyone pitched in and Emily the super-trooper made breakfast for all 10000 of us! Bailey, James and I were mad hungry though and couldn't wait so paid to help out and then went in search of quicker (though probably not as good) breakfast on Princess street. After much frustration of trying to enter closed places that looked delicious, like the GOLDEN ROOSTER, we end up in this weird asian-owned breakfast joint that wasn't so great.

First, and this is a rant, if you own a breakfast place, make it standard - waiter, free coffee, bill at the end and tip. When I wake up, I want to be seated, I want service, and I want to be coddled. The world can be harsh at 6am, and I need a gentle graduated approach to the day. This place, we had to pick our choices out and pay first, which begged the question, to tip or not? Coffee wasn't included, refills were expensive, water could only be bought in bottles for 2$ a pop, no homefries nor toast with your breakfast. BOOOOO! 1/10 to this restaurant.

Afterward we wandered back and sadly started packing up to head home. We were all pretty tried and wrecked, and an early start home meant an early arrival, which for us meant a much needed shower at home (always the best part of getting home), clothes washing, and home cooked supper.

Thank you Kingston, and my apologies to anyone I left out or events I;ve forgotten, either by accident or on purpose!

.. my heart skipped a beat and I jumped; the echo fades from the cheap blip that signals the arrival of a message on facebook. Licking my lips, I look to see if it's what I was hoping for.. expecting.. yet, fearing at the same time... and it was. The invitation was five simple words, yet the meaning ran deeper then the sum of what was written. I stare at them and they, well, they stare right back at me. I blink, the cursor blinks. I take a quick break, needing to feel the breeze, some fresh air to clear my clouded thoughts. After a few minutes, I come back, and they're still there, awaiting my response.

I steel myself, sit down, and write the words they've been waiting to hear for months.. the time has come................

Mathieu, James, Alex, and I we're supposed to shred yesterday.

I didn't show up for the shred, I was way too tired after work. James didn't make it either, I know he's been off and on footbag these days and had shit to do. I heard Mathieu made it though, and shreded by himself; the timing was horrible, Alex showed up at the rendez-vous just after Mathieu decided to stop wasting his time waiting for us, making the trip for nothing...........

That's how it COULD have went, but instead, we all showed up, kicked-ass and chewed bubble-gum! Mathieu hooked us up with some classroom deep in the labyrinthine depths of the UQAM, where the amount of pretty girls was just absolutely ridiculous. Luckily they wanted nothing to do with us and us with them, so we shut the door to the classroom where we we're shredding, moved the desks out of the way, and played some mofukkin footbizzle!!!!

Despite rust and slippery floors I had a blast. By the end of the session I could feel some of the rust peeling off, and it felt good to start stringing together some moves, even if my form and virtually non-existent flipside we're shitty that day. My blenders were on, I hit a few cool moves that I've hit before, and started getting my pixie sets and steps back. I figure I'll start with those and then venture into the realm of the esoteric once I feel like I'm standing on solid ground.

Mathieu is a little machine, he just keeps kicking and kicking and his strings are long and consistent. He's also got very nice torques, and I enjoyed his combo of Fog > Smoke. That combo was trendy back in 03-04 and it felt nice to see some throwback moves. At the end of the session when I was packing up, he was STILL complaining about how he was having trouble warming up with a 4 man circle! His endurance is something else.

James is a consistent footbag player, always has been, always will. I love his style and runs, he has a very good idea of what looks good and has a solid enough foundation to pull off whatever he wants. Also, cleanest ducks in the whole world.

Quack quack.

Alex is always a pleasure to kick with, and despite many severe ankle injuries he troopered it out and dropped some shred! Whilst he wasn't in tip-top shape he was still strong on the tricks he knew, and his presence is always welcome.

-----------------

Next shred is coming up on thursday, we've all agreed to meet again for another blast form the past session. Unfortunately Mathieu won't be able to make it, but that's OK, gives the rest of us a chance to catch up

Appreciate the lil' write-up Nicky Diamondz
Thursday is goin' down like a prostitute on St. Laurent and St. Catties.
CAN'T WAIT

Dynamic Duo will be making a comeback, there will hopefully be some decent footage assembled in the next few months (Seriously, be excited folks), and yes it takes months for us, we're not too sharp (atm)...har har har! That or lazy.

Mathieu you are out of this world. Feels like that's how I should have been playing years ago. Don't stop, you are on the path my friend.

Kicked with James today! Fun session! I was whining to him beforehand about how I didn't feel like it but he commanded me to come out and kick and so I did. More rust was peeling off today, so that's a good thing. I'm still shakey on many many concepts but every kick brings me closer to the light. Had some solid-ish strings today, nothing fancy, but just some solid guiltess play. Worked on steps, pixie, and flip faeries... for some reason. Hit whirr bs, string > blender > barfly > string , vortex bs, spinning blender > ripwalk, and a few other nice choice tricks.

James was playing pretty solidly, he's always got the freshest ducking/diving links around and today proved it yet again. His flip smog is a thing of beauty. HE also nailed some nuclear stuff, and whirling swirl bs, and just had solid 10-15 contact runs pretty much every time he kicked the bag.

Thanks, James, for getting me out for a session!
