Is myachi popular? I can honestly say before this thread i had never heard of such a thing in my life. The kids in the commercial however had clearly been doing it for quite some time.

I think it looks really lame personally, but hey, all my friends think i'm a dork for doing footbag. Different strokes i suppose.

To answer Baserock's question, Myachi is pretty popular in places and virtually unknown in others. We out-google-trend footbag in NYC and a few other cities around the US, but it is still a pretty young game.

And yes, it was the Lighter Game that inspired Myachi. We played it as a drinking game in college. The initial goal of Myachi was to combine the lighter game with footbag since lighters have this bad habit of exploding if you kick them just so.

As near as we can determine the lighter game goes back to about the same time Bic introduced the first disposable lighter.

I do kind of dig the tag line "A Lazy man's Hack", though. I have to admit that my favorite place to shred is sitting on the couch (or at the computer).

Here's a video, of me personally, playing myachi. I've only been in the game for about two months. Now before you start flaming me, I just want to say that I've always watched people play footbag. It's just that I never had the coordination with my feet to do much more then get three kicks and maybe a simple toe stall.

As much as I loved footbag in college, it is hard to deny that it isn't a very eclectic sport. Most people can't play and most people who do aren't very good.

Another positive of Myachi is that it brings a lot of people into footbag. People who might have been intimidated by the difficulty of footbag very often pick Myachi up quickly. Once they master a few hand tricks they usually start doing the basic foot moves as well.

What the hell? I've never met a single footbagger that said "Oh man I started with Myachi, and then finally got the balls to footbag." Most of all the players I have met usually started with I dunno... a hackysack, or a rare few transitioned from soccer. There is even one player I've met that was a net player THEN was interested in freestyle (just to mess around).

We've introduced a new player to footbag at Stanford. He has almost no grounds for kicking, and already we've made him foot mirage, x10 toes (back to back), and get kicks down (can do about maybe 5-6 kicks in a row)

Footbag is truly a sport where anyone can be good at it, if you just put in the hard work.

Last but not least, I can do nearly every trick in footbag with my hands. La-di-fucking da, where is my fucking award.

So you long you drill drill drill, and really love the sport you'll become a good player faster than you think.

I'm being legit here, I don't know of a single footbag tournament near me. I have a few kids in school who hack (And I use this term because they have no clue what they are doing; just trying to keep it up by whatever means necessary), but not much more. To be quite honest, they've turned more towards myachi after I showed them, because they know they can learn tricks easier with it, but still have a challenge even attempting the harder ones. Reinforcing this with my own opinion, to the noob or outsider who has to juggle other things in their life, spending even an hour 4 days a week just to get the most basic moves down seems tiring and just too much of a commitment. Now I'm 100% sure what you said is absolutely true because it applies to more than just footbag, but unless, like you said, you REALLY have a love for the game, it's not really productive. Yet with myachi, you can try it for 10 minutes, get the simplest moves down and see what it could do, and THEN decide what you want.


I honestly say let bygones be bygones and shake on it, and I'd love to continue this conversation in a nice manner.


Oh, and by the way, that video I posted is of me, 2 months after picking up a myachi. 2 months. Yet compared to your friend Conner, apparently half bad. My record for toe stall, back and forth, is 11. Regularly I get 8-9, but every now and then I do get lucky and hit 10 or 11. I think my kick record is 8, but usually I only get 4 or 5, and I have to admit, I'm a righty. I can't do a foot mirage, because I have no clue what it is. That's in 3-4 months less time.

Now I'm not bashing on footbag at all, and honestly, I really do want to incorporate a ton of more advanced footbag moves into some of my myachi repositure, but for someone reason myachi will always hold that spot in my heart over footbag, and it would take a really impressive freestyle session to blow me the other way.
