What a silly question. It takes more skill to dance well than it does to play footbag badly, and vice verca.

If your friend is just being stupid, and insists that the difficulty of footbag is incomparable to that of dancing, give him an ultimatum. Tell him he has a week to hit a mobius.

It's rediculous to say one takes more skill.

To be among the best at either skill takes an insane amount of dedication. People train their whole lives (from a VERY young age) to be good dancers. Think about how crazy ballet is.

Footbag also takes mad practice. We all know that.

To be the best at either, it takes an unmeasuable amount of skill.

I say, both are off the charts.

i was a classically trained ballet dancer when i was young and i dabbled in other forms as well. i give alot of my mobility, flexibility, and body knowledge to my 7 years of dance. however, having done both, i still couldn't say wich takes more skill. each is so completely different. it's like trying to say wich is more talented: an amazing singer or an amazing race car driver? both have unrivaled skill in thier domain, but you can't really compare them.

Of course he could. That's the point. Your argument is as silly as his is.

I'm tempted to answer dancing. Anyone who has ever seen old footage of Baryshnikov will know what I'm saying. At the highest level serious dancers are doing shit on a totally different plane than us. Like Jared said, these people train their whole lives to dance--they dont do anything else. They are insanely good and also artists of the highest level. They perform in the best venues all around the world. They are world famous for what they do.
Also if you've seen footage of the most badass breakdancers you will know how crazy that is--just as cool as freestyle but just from a different angle. Their body controll pretty much equals anything out there.
Of course I will not say that one takes more skill than the other. They both take amazing skill and they are both great.

For arguments sake, though, I'll say Freestyle Footbag takes more skill (its good to be fair and open-minded, but its also okay to choose a side and defend it, to root for your own team).

Dancers can do some cool stuff, but we move around like them and also have to keep the bag off the ground while we do it. If a dancer makes a mistake, they can cover up. Nobody might notice (except another expert dancer) a small mistake or break in proper form or the dancer can play it off like it was intentional, or just ignore it. In footbag, if you make a mistake, the bag falls on the floor, and its HARDER to ignore this mistake or pretend like you meant to do it. Unfortunately for us, experts and the uninitiated alike can always tell when a footbag player has dropped the bag.

I'm inclined to agree with Jonathan, there.
With footbag, it's not just the controll of yourself, but it's the controll of the bag that's important as well. I think for that reason, you can't realy compare the two. Perhaps you could argue about the similarities between gymnastics floor routienes and footbag, but I think you can't realy compare dancing and footbag for the reason of the bag.

Footbag - Dance with gravity.
Comment in the BCS blog if you feel the need to.

Jethro, it is not an argument for words.

If you are truly passionate about footbag, practice like a demon and then just "let" your friend walk by sometime when you're freestyling. The one that looks more beautiful in the end probably takes more skill.

When he starts talking smack, be cool and say "whatever, dude." You don't know, he might be jealous!

This semester I made a dance based off of footbag movements. The show just got over this weekend. http://news.owu.edu/2003/orchesis.html
The article got my title wrong, the real title was Rhythm and Bags. Anyways, I would say dance is harder. Yes, Dance.

I'd like some footage of what you choreographed, I'm trying to imagine what it could look like, but only footage of what you helped create would trully show your dance ' Rhythm and Bags '

EDIT :: I forgot to post something about the topic, soo...my vote goes towards dance.

Dance, something that everyone has in them once they hear that beat, that rhythm, that sound. Hundreds of styles where none are mastered because of the unique movements that come not only from 1000's of hours of practice, but the soul you put into it. Some dance forms use the whole body, every muscle put into movement in corellation to another movement that makes a motion different from the other thousand movements.

Footbag is mastery of mostly the lower body and controlling a bag with your lower body. It is a very close race. If there were thousands more people that have been footbagging more seriously for the last hundred years, it would make it easier to compare.
