Nathan wrote: Just saying, people should limit their advice to things that they've actually mastered.
This is very interesting because I think about this every so often when training with Ronnie. I have zero net accomplishments to speak of. I have not even advanced out of pools in any tournaments I've competed in. Some of what I try to help Ronnie with (which I have struggled with as well) is just repeating what Jeremy, Scot, Cory or whomever has been kind enough to offer advice has told me. I will elaborate on stuff I'm far more familiar with; his touch on the bag and using more of his body for a stronger swing

There is some potential in Ronnie in my opinion. I've seen him do things in practice that just flat out amaze me that no one else sees because he chokes really bad in games. While he may not become a phenomenal open level player I do think he can be a solid net player down the line with a lot of work. Lot. Of. Work. He's been training for a little more than a year and he still struggles with some basic skills that almost frustrates me more than it does him. It makes me wonder if that's due to my ineffectiveness as a teacher or just him being so inexperienced at hacking the sack (for the record, most of CLCK has been kicking a footbag in some form a minimum 19 years, R-Dawg just started kicking in 2005). Maybe it's a little of both.

Most of me agrees strongly with Nathan's quote. My ego would like to think that at this point, I've added to his game more than I have been detrimental to it.

Speaking of Ronnie, we were doing Bump & Kill drills last week. I was setting and he got in a ready postion, front and center with his back to the net. This is way out of his comfort zone but I thought I would see what he could do from here. I set to his right and he just blasted the bag with a beautiful toe reverse that landed right on the middle of the court. I stood there shocked with my jaw open as he reset and waited for the next set. I hit a few more random sets to his right and hit every one of those with that same, nasty toe reverse. Where the fuck did that come from?

Sunday, no plans were made do to possibility of rain and Scot having family obligations. I ended up getting a hold of Marty and we volleyed over a net court set I just finished building. Then we played 3 games of improvised pickle ball then tossed a disc around with Don. It turned out to be a long, fun day at the park. Better than sitting at home all day.

Almost forgot; ate and talked mad shit with Marty at Potbelly's

Back to the grind

We've gotten 4-5 players on the court the past 4 sessions. Tommy is in Florida for at least a year, Bryan has been busy with a new job and Scot been out due to a shit ton of family obligations. Cory, Ted and I have been to every weekend session with Ronnie and Greg filling the 4 and 5 spots when they can.

I'm still inconsistent. When I'm hot, I'm playing really strong but when I'm off my game I'm a free point on the court when the bag comes to me. Setting has been my most reliable skill since I've been using my right inside kick almost exclusively. Serve returns are still my weakest. My offense and defense are somewhere in the middle in terms of reliability. My knee can be a nagging little bitch and plays a big part with my performance lately. Other than the obvious loss of explosiveness on a jump or sprint, it really fucks with my confidence (balls deep). It leads to a lot of hesitation and second guessing.

My spike trends for the past few sessions are as follows; Bitch slaps are still the main option and hit this spike more often at any session. Shtataffs are my favorite answer for the opponents oversets. I'm still hitting standing pulldowns. They are certainly not like Tommy, Bryan or even Ronnie's pulldown but I'm very happy with the results. They generally hit midcourt with decent speed. They're just plain fun to hit too! I'll hit scuffs both standing and flying every so often. Standing has good power but clears the net half the time. Flying scuffs clear the net more often but my swing is pretty weak. I don't try as many side axe, toe jams or sunbacks as I used to but when I get a solid contact, I murder the fuck out of them. No, really... just annihilate them... it should be illegal  I just go all out when I swing for these so when I get a kill I get really charged and start screaming like a freakin' maniac.

Yesterday I played like crap the first half of the day while Cory's camera was filming. I snapped at some point and started cussing myself loudly and punching the ground. It must have cleared my head a little because my offense started to click. I got big air and crushed a shtataff on the left side, smashed some side axes and blasted a pair of toe jams. Camera battery dies at this poibt though, go figure. While I received unholy satisfaction at kicking the shit out of those spikes, all that rage didn't help my defense or my win/loss record much. Regardless, going down swinging made my day and left the session quite happy.

yo zeke, how's the takraw scene in chicago? the nashville footbag crew is about done, out of our 5 "regulars" (i use that term loosely) 2 are out with serious injuries. so i picked up the takraw once again this week. the skill set is so much higher there, not sure why i even bother to play net in nashville. 5 weeks of officially being a dad now. that kid sure does eat into my practice time!

oh yea, i can into wiley the other day at the 4-way market - it's just a beer store before you take that the wrong way. he said tommy moved to the FL, what's up with that?

What's up Elliot!

The takraw scene pretty much died last season. Jia Jia, our star player, is playing takraw back in China and original organizer of the takraw meetup group moved back east. I've been the new organizer for the past month but I have not yet gotten any new members to come out on the actual court. Personally, I really didn't want this responsibility. After years of organizing freestyle sessions (and years of hearing excuses) I was quite content to be just part of a club/group and not have to lead it. With net as my main focus the takraw group takes a back seat... trunk... maybe even more like a dragging muffler. I have been thinking about changing it to a general footsport group for hacky sack type activities.

Sorry to hear about the injuries. If takraw games are readily available then I say go play takraw... no point to wasting time being frustrated with footbag.

Yeah, kids seem to have a way of getting into practice time, from what I can see. I don't know how Scot can play at all with 3 of them!

Tommy received a year residence or some such at an art studio in Florida. He's been wanting to work primarily on his ceramic art and step away from business/sales for a while now. I'd expect him to be back in Chicago after that year... there's no net there, lol!

Guess I'll have to post a pic at the top of the next page, such as is your custom. In the meantime, don't go making any mental pictures.

I wish you were able to play takraw with me. Today I had an awesome training session in Sacramento with bunch of high level Hmong layers. We played about 10-11 games total. In the first 5 games, I hit about 4 roll spikes total. In the last 4 games I hit about 15, including going 4 for 5 in one game.
Also, I hit one with a set that was on my sunback side, meaning I had to hit it "inside out" if that makes sense. Anyway, how is the footbag going in Chicago? You playing much these days?

Yeah, still playing once a week at the shop. After more than a year of no PC, my computer is back up and running with a lot of help from Tom. I should be posting more about my usual ups and downs of this sport sooner or later. Cory has been filming for a little more than a year with his Flip camera and will be giving me about 400gb of footage (hopefully) next week. I'd like to make highlight videos after I sort out all the clips. Realistically that's at least a month away.

Hope to get a new digital camera when I get my tax returns. Very likely NOT going the DSLR route.

There have been 5-6 players regularly, most of whom have adopted the 'I' defense. Bryan has been MIA since the last WCC. Ronnie decided to join the navy and expects to ship out in less than a month. That's the 3rd person is as many years moving out of the city. More importantly, he was my main practice partner. FUCK.Anygay. Rob Creel is expected to move here (in the city, thankfully, and not the god-damned 'burbs) in May so I'm looking forward to to see how much net he'll be playing.

I've seen some of your recent vids on youtube & your roll spike is looking great! When you train with the Hmong, do you mean you play pick-up games or drills?

Games. We played only games. In between games (as in after we got our asses kicked) we drilled defense, setting, kicking etc on the sidelines waiting for our next opp. on the court.

I also do a bit of takraw drilling each week at our indoor practice. About 20 minutes of different power kicking styles, about 10 minutes of spiking, and occasionally, some blocking drills.

I hope to put up a video this week (not of the Hmong day). We'll see if I forget my camera again.

Glad to hear you're still kicking. When is Whitworth moving back? Who knows, maybe Funk is on his way out there . . .

T-Nasty is expected back in late august.
I've heard similar things from Funk himself at last years Mud Island Belt.

I am really enjoying these videos you are posting.

This may come as a surprise but I have never been much of a net player. Watching you guys play makes me want to try...

Thanks. I bet it would be tons of fun to just volley around with the guy s without actual other net players to make it complicated... say at a CIC b-day jam or somefing like that...
