Crap. I was half way done with another bag when I went to Melt another knot. While I was pulling it away from the fabric to check if I had burnt it yet or not it had apparentlybeen burned and the knot just fell off, I checked and they all just fell off and now I am back to ground zero. If this is the case why do we use dental floss? You can't even just tie knots either because they will just come apart. I don't want this to turn into the whylavers thread/ flame war, i just want advice and opinions on the subject
i personally use upholtery, when it comes to knots my panels i do 3 singles knots, 1 double knot and i finish with 3 single knots. 7 knots total, they never fell apart.
My point is, you better make too much knots than not enough, it needs to be STRONG !!
Do you mean granny knots? And do mean stacked on each other or separate? I did about nine or ten stacked together and burnt the ends. My problem wasn't the knot coming undone, it was the knot broke off, the floss broke right where it connects to the knot
i do a total of 6 knots like that and 1 double ...
i stitch the whole panel with double thread and than i pull one side out so it become single threaded. I'm sure you can make the same with the floss but there is no need to make 7 knots since its waxed.
make sure your not melting to little of the floss end. leave a good half of a inch to melt. If when you melt it, it acts like a fuse, you got good floss. once it melts to where you want it ( close to the fabric ) blow it out an push the metal part of the lighter in to the cooling blob.
my melted knots never fail me.
oh an i also do this. I don't know what your floss is like, but mine has so much wax on it that before i use it i run it threw my pinched nails to remove some of the excessive wax. This makes the fuse burn better an the thread thinner for that first panel.
i use reach waxed unscented floss... i think you just gotta be careful to be gentle with the lighter. just takes some getting used to once you have good floss
