Embarrassing faux pas - joking about your friend who is a girl who you sleep with but isn't your girlfriend giving CPR to somebody who dies, because you think it was just a scenario as part of an exam she had that day, when it was actually a real person while she was doing ambulance training. :oops:

Unbelievable shit day. Just played touch football. A friend of mine is playing against us. Everything is friendly. I sub off and a kid on their teams asks me what division I usually play. I tell him I have a broken collarbone and so can't use the left side of my body well, which is why I'm playing in a low division. About 3 minutes later my "friend," who probably weighs 130kg, so twice my weight runs through and open palm hits me in the left collarbone, completely knocking me off my feet. The ref, who doesn't know about my injury, plays a penalty straight away for the rough touch. The guy starts complaining that I took a dive. He then starts abusing me and the ref constantly until he gets sent off the field, but even then. After the game he threatens to beat me up, a girl on my team and the referee. He tells one of the girls on our team, who is telling him to go away to "pull your scrotum over your head," and a bunch of other stuff. He keeps abusing everybody for about 15 minutes. He obviously gets suspended for the rest of the season. Collarbone is a little sore, but not too bad, so I guess it's must have been almost healed, and is still all connected. So amazingly shit though. I've never seen somebody implode like that before. What the fuck.

Some good news :)

I would say I'm now 100% recovered from my broken collarbone. Have been cleared by both the footy team doctor, my GP and the hospital doctor have given me the all clear to play footy. I'm skipping this week just to be careful because we're on top of the ladder and playing the bottom of the ladder team that hasn't won a game and we beat by over 160 points last time we played them, and then we have the bye straight after that.

Touch Footy is going really well. We're now into the grand final, having smashed the top of the ladder team in the semi final :D. I got off my feet and dived for the first time in a little over 100 days, so that was good. Given that I'm 100% fit, exercising almost every day, and playing in the lowest division in the competition, I'm fairly confident of winning the grand final too.

The final piece of good news is the best one. We have a new footbagger in Hobart - Anton from Detroit is here on exchange for the semester, studying similar stuff to me at uni too. He's a bit of a beginner, but keen and has lots of potential. We played together for the first time today anyway, which was fun, and tomorrow we'll have a three man circle for the first time since Andrew Grant was here :D

Yep :)

Unfortunately not much footbag lately, but mainly because I'm back playing football :D

Oh, we won our touch footy grandfinal too :)

Footy is going well - we've won both games I played. My first game was a little average, but I kicked 2 goals. Last game was much better. We were very undermanned, possibly fielding less than a full team by the end of the game, and playing against potentially the second best team. The result didn't matter too much because we're locked in to 1st place, but we wanted to win anyway. I played well, and kicked 4 goals :) One in particular was awesome, because I intercepted a handball from a defender and ran in to the goal square to kick it, and as I ran in I heard him say "Oh shit..."

Oh, I forgot how sore football makes you though. Like it's Tuesday and I'm still sore now. I did go on two 6 hour bushwalks each day after playing though, so perhaps my own fault :P

I have a footbag demo on Thursday at a science museum, which should be fun :)

Oh and a new girlfriend :D Hopefully this one will last a little longer than the last - she certainly seems a lot less confusing and is able to communicate things to me, so that's a good sign :P

Demo went well. Must recount the following statement from an old man in the local government;

"You only ever see Negroes playing [footbag]."

It seems my attempt at creating discussion about blogs failed, so I'm going to post :P

Footbag is going well. Our three person circle going on for the rest of the year is fun. It will be sad when Anton goes back to the US, but his game has improved a lot and he's keen. I've been fairly sore and not playing particularly well. I hurt my knee at the last game of football for the season and it took a long time to get better. Now I'm playing touch footy in three teams, as well as referring other 4 to 5 games a week, so I have touch footy 3 nights a week plus 2 days training and my body isn't really up to it.

Speaking of touch, I'm playing in the top premier league this summer, which is very serious, and my first serious club touch footy since about 2003. It's a lot of fun though. There have been some crazy changes to defensive strategy in the last few years that are a bit of challenge to re-learn. The big one is that these days when you make a touch you're supposed to turn and run fowards back to get onside while looking at your short side attackers, while when I was learning the game you were told never to turn your back to play. Changing this for me is like changing your form on butterfly after 10 years of footbag. I guess only Dan Boyle will understand what I'm talking about. The other change is even more complex so I won't even try to explain. Anyway in my first game of premier league last week I played on the wing, which is the easiest position to play. I did a good job though, there were no scores either side of me, even though we lost 10 vs 5. My other two teams are going well, but they're just social.

Today I volunteered to help look after orange-bellied parrots at the local aviary. Orange-bellied parrots are one of the most endangered animals in Australia. Their population has crashed massively in the last decade. From a few thousand breeding pairs in the wild to 200 the year before last, followed by 40 last year. The most recent assessment of them predicted that they'd be extinct in the wild within 5 years and that their only hope of survival is captive breeding. They've caused a bit of controversy over recent years because a number of wind farms have been refused due to fears of them killing OBPs, which isn't supported by any science, and many people see it as a political excuse. Apparently wind farms kill micro bats (non-fruit bats) though. They have high internal pressure and thin skin and when they fly in to the low pressure zone just behind a wind turbine the pressure differential gets too big and they explode. I've only heard this anecdotally, but from a girl doing a phd on bats, so I have no reason to doubt it.

Uni has been a bit of a struggle this semester, and I'm glad the year is over in a week. I just found it incredibly boring and unchallenging, which makes it hard for me to find motivation. It feels like a lot of the stuff we do is completely useless. They should re-do all subjects with the assumption that in our lives we'll almost always have mobile access to the internet, and so not teach us things that we can look up in less than 5 seconds.

Won my first game of premier league touch :D. We were losing 3 vs 0 and then scored the next 6 tries to win 3 vs 6. We had a middle/link subbing group that I played in. Playing middle felt pretty tough, I still have a bit of improving to go. Fun times anyway.

Hilarious events at today's footbag session. Lotus was playing and this mentally challenged person started asking how long he'd been playing. Then he tried to grab the bag off Lotus in the middle of run, causing Lotus to drop it. He then actually pointed and laughed at Lotus and was like; "you dropped it hahahaha." He then told us his name was "Dork" although the people with him (who were either his parents or carers) suggested this wasn't true. He then preceded to whisper in our ears that he was called "Dork" because he had a "big dork." :lol:

Not much footbag lately, especially now that Anton has gone back to the states, so it's just Lotus and I here again.

Played in the touch footy state cup yesterday. Was a lot of fun despite our first game being at 9 am with nice and sunny weather and our last being at 5:15 with torrential rain (well, maybe not torrential :P). Played 3 games and I had to referee two as well. Also in a disaster, I started the tournament in a 3 way subbing group for the one guy link position (it was mixed), but then got moved in to a two way sub group for a middle position, I think because my defence was very strong. I didn't let in any scores for the tournament, although I think we only conceded 5 as a team. We ended up winning convincingly too, which was good. 7 v 2 in the final I think. Today I am very sore. I literally can't walk :( Looking forward to the next few days with no sport at all.

News;

I am sailing from Sydney to Hobart, leaving on Wednesday. I have started a blog, as I am told that this is what you do;

http://ilovejessicawatson.blogspot.com/

Also Lotus and I will be between fight footbag entertainment at a local MMA fight on Saturday, which should be fun. The guy organising it just got out of jail for cutting off somebodies legs. I will make sure I mention how important legs are for footbag, and that I hope to keep them.

Ok, I'm reviving my blog. I still stand by the view that we should get rid of blogs from modified, but that's obviously not going to happen, so I'm just cutting off my nose to spite my face by continuing to not post.

Quite a lot has happened since my sailing adventure (which was awesome, although I didn't blog it well).

The MMA fight demo was a lot of fun, although some of the top bikie gang leaders in the country were there, and we got ripped off on the pay, and paid a couple of hundred less than we had agreed. The managers of the venue gave us some free tickets to Cirque du Soleil though, so it all worked out.

My touch footy team has done well, I've started playing in the top division again, and we've won the last two premierships, as well as being undefeated this year so far. I did discover a boot print on my chest this morning in the shower though. I also injured my calf last night - just a mild strain, but because of the situation in the game I pushed through it (we were losing 6-7 at half time, but went on to win 12-9) and it's pretty sore now.

Footbag over the last few years has been going badly, mainly because most of my joints are in bad shape, so I don't play very often. Lotus moved away too, so there is no scene in Hobart any more :(. I did manage to get a clean sweep at the last Aus Nationals, but it felt a bit like it was a win by default, since none of the top competitors since I started playing footbag 12 years ago were there. Still it was a fun event, and footbag golf has become a particularly competitive event, which I was very lucky to win (for the third year in a row :D). Actually my attendance was very impromptu, as I had been doing 2 months of field work in the South West of Western Australia (helping with some tall Eucalypt research), and we happened to finish a couple of days before nationals, and I managed to convince my boss that a flight to Sydney, which was considerably cheaper than a flight to Hobart, would be ok, despite being for personal reasons (and I paid for my own way from there, saving the university money). This meant I had to take the "red-eye" overnight flight across the country, and so hadn't had any sleep at all when I arrived at the tournament, but fired up with some caffeine and was fine.

Obviously the biggest thing in my life is having a baby now, although being me, I've read so much about babies and parenting now that I've found it relatively easy going so far, or at least much as I expected. People talk a lot about what a big life style change it is, and that's true, but I there's so much information out there these days, I think you probably should know what you're getting yourself into, although the gap between deciding to have a baby and getting pregnant was so small that most of my research was done during the pregnancy.

Anyway that's a bit of an update on my life. I'll mainly try to blog about playing footbag, which I'm going to try to start doing on a daily basis again, although probably not for a few weeks while my calf recovers. I'm going to particularly focus on avoiding joint stress, so take things easy and with few dexes. Fitness and enjoying playing are my main motivations, so I will try to avoid attempting anything exciting, although I probably won't be able to help myself.

Good to see you posting on here again - like you said, if the blogs aren't going away from here, it makes sense to post in one. Congrats on the baby - maybe we can make a new Australian scene when all the footbag babies grow up...

Thanks Boyle. Hopefully we won't have to wait until our babies and impending babies are old enough before there is a rival of the scene though :P

I haven't had much opportunity to play, due to injury, and other commitments, but in some way influenced by the achievements topic, I've been writing down some goals that I'll share - some are specific, while others are general. In not much order;

Reach a level better than my previous peak.
Play 10 days in a row
Play 100 days in a row
Play 1000 days in a row
Focus on non-shuffle and low impact moves
Film at least 10 fearless
Beat my unique fearless record (11)
Film a beast
Become consistent at a beast (eg. hit it most attempts - I should quantify consistent at some point I guess)
Become consistent at a 200+ shred 30
Become consistent at a decent sick 3 (can be the beast, or something cooler, especially if the beast is all cheap 6s).
Achieve 10000 consecutive kicks.

I'm creating a spreadsheet of tricks I consider "standards" that alternate sides and cover a good variety, and part of every session will be having a few cracks at consecutives of those tricks (I might include drills) too, so I can better track progress. There's no time frame for these goals; I'm not planning on playing every day from now for the next 1000 days, they're just things to aim for. I might try generally filming some sessions too, although I doubt I'll publish anything in the near future. Anyway I'll post the things I'm tracking in the spreadsheet at some point, perhaps after I've been doing it for a while and have some data, and also might have refined things a bit.
