My last two attempts at projects in Premiere have been successful. Maybe I've found the right settings? Don't want to celebrate yet. Anyway, i was able to make my third blog video, and it came out in HD and everything. The footage is from yesterday's session, where I mostly worked on nuke sets and whirling swirls. I think I may finally be making some progress on nuclear set. That set has given me problems for years, so I'd be thrilled to add it to my game. I've been skooling whirling swirls for a couple weeks now, and I finally feel like they're getting more consistent.

Not to jinx myself, but I managed to edit my 3rd successful Premiere project in a row. Transitions, songs, and HD. Feeling very encouraged by this. I'm also figuring out some of Premiere's quirks. For example, if you try and import video files and an MP3 from the same folder all at once, it'll reject most of the video files as damaged. But if you do the video files by themselves, and then later import the MP3, it works. Strange.
Anyway. In my NYJ write up, I mentioned how I spaunched in request contest. As I sat there hearing each round's combos, I remember thinking to myself: it'd be fun to have a session where I try and hit as many of these combos as possible in runs. And so I did, in the middle of last week, and made a video of it. Here's the Link List.

I was in DC for 4 days last week on business, and decided not to bring my shred gear with me. It was sleety and snowing heavily in DC, and just miserable weather wise. When I got back, I was rewarded with two days in a row where the high was in the low to mid 60s. Denver is awesome. Got outdoor sessions both days. Saturday was particularly fun, as Luis Lipchak was in town from Boulder, and we got to hang out and play. I plan on making a video of that this weekend.
My Flip HD camera is showing it's age in annoying ways now. I charge it for almost 8 hours at work, and sometimes the battery craps out after just 30 minutes of filming. Other days its fine. Pretty annoying though. I wonder if I can just replace the battery.
Footbagwise I'm not really working on any specific goals. In fact, there are things I should be working on, which I'm neglecting. At this stage though, if there's something that holds my interest, I figure I should just ride that interest and not beat myself up for neglecting other areas of need in my game. The concept that I've been working hard on for the last few weeks has been nuclear. It's very frustrating, but I think I'm making some progress. Here's a small video I made of some matador combos which are new to me. As you can see, I'm making an effort to learn this set on both sides.

Not sure where I want to go with nuke set. I think it'd be a fun mixup to my game if I could get it to the point where its somewhat reliable and I can do them midstring. I'd also love to hit 69 once. That's one of my few remaining dream tricks, and I think it's an attainable goal if I keep making progress with this set.

Thanks for the comment, Kevin. These videos take a lot more time and effort to put together than just throwing up YT links, but I think they look better, and are easier for the viewer to deal with. That Raekwon album is very solid. Just great beats throughout. With these small blog vids, I'm not doing any real editing, but I hope to get around to making my autumn video soon, and there I'll try to get the images to interact more with the songs.
Last weekend the weather was insane. Highs in the mid 60s on Friday and Saturday, and it cracked mid 50s on Sunday. I played outside on Friday and Saturday, though my camera battery died early on Friday. Saturday was perfect. Luis Lipchak was in town for interviews, so we got to hang out some, and got in a shred on Saturday. The weather was perfect, we had tunes, and my camera battery lasted the whole time. It was great. I worked more on nuke sets, but also had fun messing around with some spins, and hit some new stuff. I put together a highlight video, and it made me happy to see how good outdoor footage looks in HD. My autumn video is almost entirely outdoor footage, so it'll be this quality:

After our bout of spring weather, Denver turned around completely, and now it's snowy out and below zero. The high today is negative 3, though it's supposed to get up to a high of 49 by Friday. Denver weather is the most schizo I've ever seen, but it's kinda fun. I'm gonna try and brave the cold today and get to the gym, and maybe film some more indoors.
Can a mod delete my last double post? Thanks.
Let's get bounce!

This week was very likely the most stressful and busy week I've had in my career. Thankfully, my work paid off and things went well, but it was exhausting nonetheless. Because of that, I only got in two shreds this week: yesterday and today. Thursday I forgot my camera (so no footage), while today I shot, but didn't hit that much. Both days I decided to try and re-hit a bunch of my old spinning challenges. I figured it'd be a fun way to work on my spins, and particularly my flip spins. It was surprising to me to find out which challenges still give me trouble, and which ones I was able to hit with relative ease. Overall though I was pleased with the results. I was able to get a bunch of the challenges done in both sessions, and some of them took me ages to get when I first worked on them two years ago. Definitely feel like I've made some good progress on spins over the last two years.
Here's a very lazily put together video of today's shred. Please watch in HD:

Yeah man, me too. Can't believe it's been over 3 years since we last played.
Work has been exhausting lately, but I've gotten in some shreds. My camera battery is extremely unreliable now. I'll charge it 8 hours at work, and then some days it'll be good for 2 hours, and other days it craps out after 30 minutes. Lately I've mostly been working on revisiting my old spinning challenges, and just going for spinning links. I'll do a few matadors each session just so I don't regress, but the current flavor is spinning. I'm going to Arizona for a week soon, so I'm gonna wait to edit most of this week's footage on the plane/bus. Expect a couple blog vids next week.
A couple years back I posted a list of all the tournies I'd been to in my blog. Thought I'd update it both with tournaments I've been to since, and in some cases some new thoughts:
1997
1. NYFA Footbag Explosion. My first footbag experience. Didn't compete, but made some friends I'm still close with today, like Ian Brill.
1998
2. Montreal Summer Footbag...something. Totally sandbagged and won intermediate routines. My first time competing ever.
1999
3. Worlds 99. My first Worlds. Sandbagged in intermediate again, finished in 6th or 8th. 6th I think.
2000
4. Philly Open 2. My first time competing in Open, and I won routines and sick combo (ripped warrior -fog). Did well in doubles net with Yacine, and won a wallet which I used for the next 8 years.
5. Some random tourney in Montreal that Yacine threw. I won routines and Shred... was it still shred45, or was it Shred30? My score was around 129.
6. Worlds 2000. Made it to semifinals and did a routine to a Primus song. Won a match in intermediate singles net against Joel Dion, the guy who founded Hackrifice. Dropped out of the sport for 6 months afterwards.
2001
7. Funtastiks. I don't think I competed in anything. Had fun, but didn't get to go to another funtastiks until 7 years later
8. Another Yacine tourney in Montreal. Won routines.
9. Western Regionals. Think I finished in 4th place, and considered this one of my biggest wins. I was AWOL for most of this tournament, as Tu, Brian MacKenzie and I all decided to spend the day having fun in SF instead of playing at the tourney. Burritos, Mexican Wrestling, and Haight Ashbury.
2002
10. Penn State Trio Official Footbag Forum 2. Beat Bevier and Yacine in routines to win the tourney.
11. East Coasts. Took 3rd in routines to a J5 song. In Sick Trick I was trying for Your Mom, but couldn't get it. I remember hitting 5 unique fearless (blw-blw-psw-pdx torque-pdx blender) and it being a big deal for me.
12. SF Jam. No competition at all, but it was a footbag event I crossed the country to attend, so I count it. Footage of this is on one of Dan Klokow's vids.
2003
13. Japanese Footbag Champs. Pepsi sponsored the tourney, which was a sweet gravy train. We flew in Sunil to do demos, I got paid $1000 just to judge, Sunil and I were put up in a 4 star hotel, the works.
14. Tokyo Shredder Gathering 1. I did a Sick3 demo which went really well. I'll post the youtube link to it later.
15. Worlds 2003. This whole week is a fun haze in my memory. I remember hitting 4 unique triple dexes for Rippin, which blew him away. I did well in semis, and just missed making finals in routines. I remember thinking I'd make finals for sure in the near future. As of 2010, still haven't!
2004
16. Jap. Footbag Champs 2.
17. TSG2. I did my first dropless Shred30 ever, which was also the first time I ever broke 200 in Shred30. My first time competing in Japan. I saw that as a promising sign that the scene was getting better.
18. Worlds 2004. Fighting injury, and I did dismally. I did a routine to "Under Pressure" by Bowie and Queen, and ironically choked under pressure. Oy.
2005
19. JFC3. This was also a milestone tournament, because I did a lot of work ahead of the tourney holding judging workshops to train judges. The actual tournament itself I didn't judge, and instead was like a supervisor judge. I let the Japanese players do all the work, and I was just there to cast tie-breakers or let them know if they were doing anything wrong. They did great.
20. TSG3. Andrew Grant came, and it was a blast. Won Shred 30.
21. Worlds 2005. Did my best routine to that point in my career. Had a 1 drop routine in the first round, but didn't make it out of the pool of death in semis. Shred30 was 3 different rounds. I went dropless in semis, and I think only had 1 drop in finals and qualifiers. I averaged about 196 across the 3 rounds, and took 4th place in finals. My strongest Worlds up to that point.
22. Rochester NYJ. I won shred with a score over 200, but the counters added it wrong and gave 1st to Flash. Won sick 3 as well, with alpine leg-fog-pixie diving eclipse.
2006
23. CSS7. I remember playing very strong all tourney. Had a late night session with Clavens which was probably my most intense session ever at a tourney. Epic times. I also saw an NBA player (Eduardo Najera) at a restaurant which was cool.
24. Santa Cruz Invitational. This tournament was a blast. I met Kyle, the ZJacksons, and Landes. The highlight of the tourney was playing 5-on-5 basketball with Penske, Lon, Mirken, and other footbaggers. I took 3rd in Sick Trick for symp whirling eclipse, 3rd in shred with a score over 200, and 3rd in Rippin Run
25. Cornell Footbag Jam. Hit backside frantic eclipse in Sick 1. I think I got 3rd in Circle behind Moir and Clavens.
2007
26. CFJ2. I didn't compete, because school kicked my ass too hard before and after. I helped run things and judged every event, and the next day I took an econ midterm. Rough.
27. East Coasts. Went on a whim at the last minute with Jon S. Had a one drop routine in Finals, and came in 3rd place.
28. Worlds 2007. This was the first year that I was really serious about practicing a routine, and it didn't pay off. I learned that I needed to be even more serious about practice. Despite the fact that I didn't practice Shred30 at ALL, I still managed to take 8th place with a score in the 190s. Go figure.
2008
29. Shred for Savvy. This was going to be the tourney that I finally went dropless. I practiced sooooo freaking much for it. But as fate would have it, I had 1 drop. I was still excited though, since it was easily my best routine to date, by far. This was also one of my stronger circle comps ever. I also had excellent cake at this tournament.
30. USO. 1 drop routines in both rounds. Yargh! But my finals routine was almost 2 minutes straight without a drop, so I felt like it was an improvement over the one I did at Shred for Savvy.
31. NYFA Jam 2: One of my best tourney showings ever. I beat Jorden in Rippin Run, won sick 3 with whirling ss butter-fog-toebius, and most importantly, I went dropless in routines for my first time ever. This was one of the best moments in my entire footbag career.
32. Worlds 2008. I almost died at this tournament. Somehow, comp doesn't seem that memorable. I did well in qualifiers and surprisingly well in semis. My proudest achievement was not dying. Footbagwise, this wasn't a good event. But in terms of the course of my life, this was a good experience.
33. Funtastiks. 7 years after my last one. Crazy. Hit my 2nd dropless routine at the tourney, which was good for 3rd place. I had way too many pdx mirages in it, but given how soon it was after injuring myself in Prague, I was proud of it. I also took 4th in doubles intermediate net, which I was proud of.
34. East Coasts. Hit my 3rd dropless routine and eked out a win with it. If I go dropless, I don't really care what place I get, because I feel like I won the game of going dropless.
35. NYJ 08: My first NYJ! Just a great time hanging out. Took third in Circles, behind Clavens and Gatesman who were kicking ass in Finals.
2009
36. NYFA Jam 3: Won routines, but kind of by default. Sucked real bad with my routine, which made me nervous about how I'd do at Worlds that year. Used the motivation of my bad routine to kick hard and win Circle and Request.
37. Worlds 09: Went dropless in routines in the first round. Still my favorite routine to date. Had 2 drops in semis, and my choreo was off, so no Finals for me. Best run Worlds I've been to, and a lot of fun.
38. East Coasts 09: Eked out wins in routines, circle and request. Ryan Thomas could have beat me in any of them. Was going through a tough spot in my personal life, so this was a hard tourney to focus at. Played some intermediate net too.
39. NYJ 09: I had a great routine ready, but had two drops in comp, which was disappointing. Somehow managed to upset Milan in both rounds of Circle though, which I was very proud of. Likely my second best Circle comp to date.
2010
Didn't make many tournies this year, mostly because I was in Colorado for work and couldn't take time off easily.
40. Worlds 10: Finished tied for 10th in routines, and tied for 9th in Circle comp. Nice to be able to say I finished in the top 10 at Worlds once in my career. This was also my best Circle comp ever.
41. Funtastiks: My 5th dropless routine, which was good for second place behind Clavens. Probably my second favorite routine I've done. Highlight may have been filming the Double Eliminathan video.
42. NYJ 10: Won routines, took second in Circle behind Gatesman. Was sick the whole tourney, so it's a bit hazy in my memory.

In Arizona this week for work, so I decided to come down a little early to see my folks. I've been eating like a king, and the weather hasn't been too shabby either. Gonna try and get in an outdoor session every day I'm in Arizona. On the plane ride from Denver I edited another blog video. This one is 90% spinning combos:

My camera is still schizo, so some sessions it craps out in under 30 minutes, and other days it goes for over 2 hours. Weird.
My last 3 sessions in a row, I managed to hit a 7 add which had been eluding me. My first session I hit it after the camera died, my second session I got it on camera but it wasn't framed well, and today I finally got it on film. Will add it to my video project. I really should get around to making that video already. I think on this trip I'm just gonna play/shoot as much as I can outdoors, and once I get back to the cold of Denver I'll get to making a video. I have enough footage that I might make two, but we'll see.

Been playing a ton of footbag lately, and playing well. I was in Arizona for a week for work and to see my folks, and I played outside almost every day. When I got back, I caught the tail end of a mini heat wave in Denver, and got in 2 great outdoor sessions in a three day span. I took today off from footbag, but I plan on playing tomorrow. Lately I haven't been working on anything in particular...mostly just seeing what comes to me. That said, I still try and do a few strings each session specifically aimed at improving my flip spins and flip open set.
Made two small video projects this weekend so far. Premiere still acts up sometimes and gives me headaches. It's such a finicky little bitch of a program. I have a ton of clips set up to make a proper highlight video, but I'm almost scared to try, since I don't think I'd deal well with a big project crashing. I may give it a shot tomorrow...we'll see.
Here's a video I put together of highlights from my Arizona trip. Please watch in HD, and comments are welcome. I'm currently averaging about 0.5 comments per video I post in my blog, which is a pretty terrible return on my time, considering how much effort it takes to make these.

In other notable news, I hit my fortieth beast yesterday. I'm pretty sure I hit my first beast around this time last year, so I'm pretty proud to have hit 40 in a year. I've also hit two new sevens in the last week, both on video, which has to be a new record for me. I'm mostly happy because they are very different from each other, which makes me feel like my overall game is more solid than it used to be.

Hey Ken, just wanted to say I'm guilty of watching your vids and never commenting. I watching all of them. I watched this one earlier on YouTube because I subscribe your channel. Thing is I don't know what to give you props on. I'm the kinda guy who only knows what a move is if I can hit it. And if I can hit a move you don't need props on it. lol But I enjoy all your video's and I'll endeavor to comment more in the future.

Got in 3 outdoor shreds in my first five days back from Phoenix. Very sweet bonus to get that opportunity in Colorado in the end of February. The shreds enabled me to film a few more clips for my video too. It's really pretty crazy how much better my camera shoots in outdoor light compared to indoors. I've got a ton of clips now, so I just need to pick a song and dedicate a day to editing it all up. I'd really like to do a good job on this, considering I finally know how to export in HD, and I'm working on my own time. I'll be going to Sacramento two times in the next 3 weeks, on work trips. The forecast is full of rain, so maybe I'll edit my big video on those trips.
The other day I was procrastinating, so I reread a bunch of old blogs. The first few pages of Sinatra's are hilarious, and the first page of Riefer's tells a great story too. On my trip down memory lane, I decided to read through my challenge thread to see if I'd missed anything. Sure enough I found some challenges that I'd initially rejected as too hard, but can probably go for now. Beyond specific challenges though, it kind of hit me that I currently don't have any goals I'm working on. I feel like I improve faster when I have a specific goal I'm working on, and it feels weird to not have one now. Like, a few years back I was on a quest to do a dropless routine. Then it was to work on my spins. Then dropless at Worlds. Then beasts, etc. But as of right now, I feel adrift, as there is nothing that I'm obsessively chasing at the moment. Sure, I'd like to make routine finals at Worlds, but at this point I'm not even sure I'm going. I'm still playing regularly, I have fun when I play, and I occasionally get something I'm stoked about. But nothing feels like a long term project. I'm not entirely sure what to do about it, or if I should be concerned, but it's weird so I thought I'd note it.
Looking over my challenge thread and my blog entries from a few years back, two goals did stand out. One was mobius x2, and the other was spinning mobius. It's notable that I've wanted both of these for so long... and have put in such little effort in getting them. I feel like with my other stated goals, I put a lot of time and systematic effort into getting them. But not these two. So I 'm going to make hitting them a short term goal. I'm going to make a point to spend 10 minutes each session on each of these goals. Hopefully I'll get one of them within a month of doing that. I think spinning mobius is more likely... like, I should be able to fluke it at least once.
I don't like making posts without video, so here's a cool drill I was happy to hit yesterday:

Can't believe February is already over. On one hand I'm excited because it means we're that much closer to spring, but on the other hand it also means I need to figure out my summer plans sooner than later. This has been a very enjoyably mild winter in Colorado. I've played footbag outside a ton since Thanksgiving (including another session this weekend), and I never felt like winter was getting me down. My body and game feel strong, since I never really took time off. March is supposed to be the snowiest month in Denver, but I still feel like Spring is on its way, and isn't far off.
As for summer plans, I'm still on the fence about Worlds. I'm not as motivated as in past years to do well in competition, and I've already been to Helsinki before, so it's a bit harder to justify the time and cost of flying out to Finland for a week. One variable that could make it more likely, is if my niece's baptism in Spain happens in late July, I might be able to combine the two trips. We'll see. If I decide to not go to Worlds, I'm toying with the idea of going to Japan for a couple weeks, since I haven't been there since summer of 2006. I miss my friends there, and the longer I put off a return trip, the worse my Japanese will deteriorate.
Vegas jam is less than a month away, and I'm starting to get very excited about it. Caroline Birch is one of my favorite people, playing with Gatesman and Penske is always a treat, and it sounds like a decent chunk of NYFA is coming to boot! A weekend of shred, old friends, and poker sounds incredibly awesome. I'm hoping events get finalized soon, since I lack the motivation to prepare a routine until I know they're officially happening. I'd really like to go dropless at least once more before I retire from competition.
Here's a video I made this weekend. It has clips from this weekend, as well as some older clips I had lying around. I managed to export it fine from Premiere, only to have YouTube block the audio. I went back into Premiere to change the track, and ran into a bunch of problems, so I ended up just audio-swapping it on YT. Fuck you, Warner Music Group.

I'll be in Sacramento this week, but the forecast is full of rain. I'll bring my shred gear along anyway, but if I have to take a bit of time off from playing, that doesn't have to be a bad thing either.

You are more than welcome to crash at my place for as long as you want. I would love to hang out with you again in Japan. Kenzo is pretty sure that he is going to Helsinki this year, and I am unsure about it; That is a busy time of the year for me, plus I'm "not allowed" in my contract to leave Japan until after the 7th of August...C-Fan wrote: As for summer plans, I'm still on the fence about Worlds. Thanks for all of the vids, thoughts, motivation, etc., that you put in your blog. I am an avid reader, just not an avid commenter.
