A Cool Footbag Story Dealing With My Chinese Professor

Post by F[uns]tylin' Eclectic »

I Just got back from my only 2 classes of the day and something sick happened in one of them!

The first week of my Economics class, my Chinese professor told us to write a short blurb about ourselves and we would get some extra credit. So I did, and of course, I mentioned footbag since I'm utterly obsessed with it. He wrote back saying that he had something like that in his country back home called "Jianzi" and that he was very good at it when he was younger. I was so stoked on this and he and I talked about it through email for a bit. I asked him if he would kick with me one day after class and he agreed.

...Today, Economics was so boring. So toward the end of class the professor said "OK, I realize most of you are falling asleep, because of very dry material, so I will end class in a fun way." I heard this and was kind of excited, because fun things are fun. He then pulls out a manilla envelope and says "Our fellow classmate, Nick..." My heart jumped... I had no idea what to expect. "...is going to put on a performance for us, I got this sent from my country." He pulls one of these babies out:

Then throws me the shuttle cock and says that it's mine, then tells me to perform for the class. I was so unprepared! I had slip-on Vans and tighter jeans on. And on top of that, this thing was SO not like a footbag! I put on a decent-ish show for the class, then class was dismissed. I walked over to the professor to thank him. After I shook his hand, he asked to see the shuttlecock. I passed it to him and he started hacking with it! He was pretty damn good for an older guy who hasn't kicked for quite some time.

His Highlights:

 Butterfly Kick :P

We hacked back and forth for a little, while some of our class stayed and watched.

I figured maybe a light-hearted, footbag story would brighten up everyone's day :D

THA END.

That reminds me of a similar experience I had, but where I was the Chinese teacher:
K, right.
So super awesome hack moment.
The Jr. Highs all left for an overnight trip to Hecla Island and so the school was all out of synch, and there were more kids in the library than usual. And not the regular kids either. So there were a bunch of pretty riley kids doing thinsg like talking really loud and strumming guitars and stuff that they know they shouldn't really be doing, and which were annoying, but not really annoying enough that I felt like chastising them. I had to close the library at 3:30 (for which I have a weekly door sign) and so I was kind of preparing to give them the boot, and called out, "K, guys, I'm closing up in 10 minutes!" Just when I was about to go out and claer them out, I saw one kicking a hacky sack a bit. Clearly not library behavior!!! DUN DUN DUUUUN! So I walked over to them. About a group of 5ish high school boys. The one kinda slipped the hack into his pocket and I was saying something, like, "Okay, home time!" And then they were talking to me or something, and not leaving immediately as requested. So I asked if I could see his hack. And he was, like, "I dunnoooo" 'cause I guess Mr. Chan = teacher, teacher = confiscate hacky sack. And I was, like, "Come on, I'll give it back. I'll show you a trick." And then I tried PS reverse whirl. In pants and shoe and stuff. I missed first try, and was, like, "Oh, hehe, wait." And did it second try, and they were floored. I caught the bag and tossed it back to him and said to everyone, "Okay, now go home!" The boys crowded around me were, like, "NO WAY!" And the girls sitting at the table were, like, "swoon swoon swoon" (totally) And one of the boys was, like, "Can't argue with that! Let's go boys!" K, so, in story form it doesn't sound quite as epic, but it sure felt great.

Thanks for reading guys! Cool story, Erik. You're probably a cool teacher and your students probably talk about you and think you're awesome for being a teacher who's good at "hacky sack". One of our student teachers in high school used to kick with us.

Dante, apparently footbag shoes don't help too much with Shuttlecocks. Well, not Nukes, at least.
