So, I've been really busy, but have finally devoted enough time to my latest project in footbag that I feel like I can introduce some people to it:

The East Coast Kick

So far, I have up interviews with some people involved with KICKASS, and more content should be showing up on a daily basis.

Since I am only posting this here for now (rather than announcing it on General Footbag or something) I want a little feedback about the design, etc. By Monday there will be quite a bit more to see and I'll unveil it for real or whatever.

Hopefully, this will turn out to be something pretty cool.

Cool.
The site looks really clean and simple, which is cool.
I like the subtle background.

The only thing I can think of when first looking at it is that the footbag image is really grainy. The photo itself is really cool, but if the quality was higher, it would look a lot nicer.

Can't wait for the video :D

I kinda like the grain, makes it look more vintage. Props on making the zine. I look forward to watching its development!

I subscribed, so I've been getting instant notifications of your posts. Cool stuff. I'm happy to finally see footage (thanks Mathieu!). But upon reviewing the short video, I'm more puzzled as to how I won. Haha. Mathieu and Adam were both ripping so much harder.

I'm gonna read the death of a bag one now.

I like the reception my new site has gotten so far. I wish I had more time to devote to it.

Here's a new post, though: Click clack

In terms of me -- school's been ramping up, and I twisted my ankle. Trying to stay positive until I can play footbag again.

Long time, no blog.

It's sad for me to look back only a few months and see how excited I was to work on the EC Kick. My interest waned very quickly, for a couple of reasons.

One is that I was hoping to somehow make the site "newsworthy" in that people would want to visit it for breaking news and updates. I knew going into it that there isn't much "news" in the footbag world, but thought I might be able to find a way around it. I didn't, and everything ended up being features basically.

Secondly, I am studying journalism and have been writing for the school newspaper, quite frankly I get tired of writing and seeing a keyboard in front of me all the time.

Most importantly, though, footbag has been replaced, in part, with a new goal (obsession probably, since that's the type of person I am). That is to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail starting March 4. This means I hike the whole trail in one shot -- 2200 miles in 4-5 months. In terms of EC Kick, it became hard to motivate myself to update a site that I knew I would be abandoning in a few months anyway.

It will be weird to not be playing footbag for a long time come March. I will probably bring one along in my pack, but I won't have my Lavers and I won't have much energy to do anything besides walk. This will be my longest break from the sport since I started playing. On the other hand, I am really excited for this trip. I think the amount of motivation I have is necessary to force myself to walk 15-20 miles everyday for that long a time. I'm taking a semester off school so it wasn't a decision I came to abruptly.

I'll probably have an email list, or maybe I will just post my emails in my blog. Either way I will try to keep all my friends in the footbagosphere in the loop.

Peace!

Good luck on the trails, man! Sucks you're taking a break for that long though. But ya know, sometimes it helps to step away from something like footbag for a little while and come back with a clean head and perhaps a new outlook on it. Hope you'll be down for some footbag next year when I move up to PSU. Stefan and I are really looking forward to shredding with you and Brill. Especially Stefan, he's so amped to meet and shred with new people.

Well, Happy Trails, and Godspeed!

Ello. Time to update ye old blog I think.

There's a good chance this will be my last post here till August or September. As I mentioned in my last entry, I'm hiking the Appalachian Trail, which will remove me from the world of footbag for 5 months as I hike up the East Coast of the United States. I'm leaving Friday.

I think hiking has almost completely replaced footbag right now. In the future (after I hopefully successfully finish the trek) I imagine my interest in footbag will return. But I haven't felt this non committal towards practicing hack in, maybe ever. My lavers legitimately don't fit anymore and I haven't even bought a replacement pair. I haven't played with Ian Brill since 2010.

Anyway, I'd like to be able to keep in touch with as many of my friends on this website as I can while I'm walking. The best way to do that is by adding anyone who is interested to my email list -- just send me a PM or fbook msg with your email address. I'll be emailing out updates roughly whenever I feel like it, which will mostly be determined by whether i have computer access. Let's say every 1-2 weeks average. Feel free to write back in return, I'd love to read about new tricks, tourney results, bullshit etc. I'm probably not bringing any books along so will be starved for words to read..

Oh, and Nick, I will be glad to play footbag in the Fall! Stoked to have you on main campus.

Peace out modified! See you in the summer! 8)

Appalachian Trail, that's nuts dude! Takes a lot of commitment, hope it's life-changing and awe-inspiring the whole way through!

Yo yo, footbag world. I miss you...

Just wanted to write a lil sumin while I have the time.

Its been 7 weeks on the trail and this might be the 5th time I've been in front of a keyboard. After I write I'm going to watch a footbag vid or two and then try to take care of some odds and ends I need to.

I've hiked 627 of the Appalachian Trail's 2179 miles. The community out here is a lot like the footbag community. People will let me sleep in their house just because I am a hiker, even if we are strangers. Thru-hikers can become fast friends in just a few days of meeting each other. Hiking 15-20 miles a day is tough but somehow the good times outweigh the bad.

I do miss playing footbag a lot though. Hopefully when I get back home there will be some sort of tournament this fall to replace Funtastiks. If not, the newly enlarged PSU crew might have to take matters into our own hands!!

Peace,

Nathan

Good to hear from you again dude! Glad you're down to shred again when you're back. And as you were saying...

I threw my first jam this semester. There was a really sweet turn-out and it seems like everyone really enjoyed themselves, so I'm gonna try to do it up in H-Burg around Labor Day to make up for Funtastiks.

Looking forward to reading tales of your journey. Can't wait til next year. Hike easy.

I know you're back from school and playing again. I'd love to see some updates in here, especially now that you have a scene going at PSU. Video would be even better.

Hey Ken, thanks for the revival. Just what I needed to get back to writing in this thing sometimes.

So yeah, I finished the AT on August 6, and started my fourth semester at Penn State Aug 22.

I like to think that I've changed a lot after the hike -- I am a bit better student and concentrate better. I spend more time practicing things instead of consuming things (like media and internet).

Now that Nick is going to PSU as well I've been kicking a lot. I don't play much solo but we school pretty hard a couple times a week. Last night I twisted my ankle though, so I'll be taking a few days off. I'm also hanging out with a girl these days who just bought lavers and is learning all the basics. So that's been fun and has me kicking even more.

So only two months after a 5 month hiatus from the sport and I think I am playing nearly the best I ever have. That's a good feeling. Two days ago I hit blurriest both sides which, as anyone who's seen me play knows, is not exactly the type of trick I hit often. Also got a few pdx eggs in some strings.

I still think about the AT a lot, it was an amazing experience. I started the trail with two of my friends and about halfway through we ended up splitting up, even though we all still finished. I was the front-runner of the three of us, and the first to finish. On the second half of the trip I was averaging 19 miles of hiking everyday. Looking back its kind of hard to believe I pushed myself like that.

I think starting the trail with my friends was a good experience for a couple reasons. First, simply because we had such a great time hiking together, even though we goofed off a lot and got way behind the schedule I was planning on at first. The second reason is because it gave me a really good look at what it takes to actually hike 2200 miles, and how each of us approached the trail differently. For me, I had to feel like I was making progress every day. I didn't have a set schedule, but tried to push myself every day to hike a few extra miles. At the end of the day, it made the hike seem manageable, plus I would end every day completely exhausted and take a lot of joy in just being able to sit down and stop moving.

My friends didn't hold the same view, and basically just took it easier. While I couldn't stand hiking every day at their pace, because I started to get anxious to keep going, it obviously worked still because they both still finished. However, all told, I feel like their hike was more like a vacation while mine was more focused on reaching my limits of physical and mental stamina. And I'm really grateful for the things I learned while challenging myself like that.

Anyway, just some thoughts I have on hiking the AT -- one of the best decisions I've ever made. I think most people who read this are probably "friends" with me on Facebook, where I've uploaded all my pictures from the trail. Check em out!

So, I've been playing a lot recently and hitting some stuff worth noting I think.

We had a nice session outside on campus yesterday, and I played really well. let's see...

-ducking pdx dlo
-spin pdx dlo
-fog>dimwalk>rpt x1.5
-ripped
-predator
-pixie drill with all the basic downtime stuff.. so 16 contacts
-atom x 10

There might have been some other stuff but that's what I'm remembering now. Nick was playing alright but hating on his new frankenstein shoes (see his blog). 4 of our noobs were playing with us, and George and Ivan both hit some new stuff.. pdx mirage and flip legover, respectively.

We're working on getting an official club going at PSU, and a PSU Jam is in the works. East Coast revival, bitches. 8)

Hey, errbuddy reading this, Nathan's back on the attack. He really amazed me during last session. It seems as if he's taken just one week of solo playing and upped his playing level by... I don't know how to describe the numerical value... so I'll say "A fuck load".

Nate, you missed Backside Blur> Alpine Smoke, as well.

You were freaking ridiculous the other day. You really inspired me to start really kicking it into gear.

We should kick again as soon as possible man. Now that I know my leg is ok, I'm fiending for footbag.

Let me know if you're free this week.

AWWwwwww, Thanks Nick.

We played yesterday and had a good time -- 2.5 hours, 2 prospective noobs to join our sessions, and 1 media op (with the Centre County Report)

I played pretty well too. We started out with like 6 people and the bag was moving slowly around the circle cuz we had people distracting us and shit. But by the time it was down to me, Nick and Ivan at the end of the session I really warmed up and started to play.

Things I remember:

-phoenix> blw> blw> matador> bld> sumo
-fog>dim>rpt (9 contacts of it)
-ended on 3 long strings on b2b turns -- 42 contacts, then 60+ then 30+. A good feeling, since I usually try to end on 30.

I need to stitch myself a new bag, I'm getting tired of playing with an old Abshire.
