Footbag's ethnic minorities

Post by Muffinman »

All the talk about shuttlecock and Chinese footbag players got me wondering about the number of Chinese players already, and the numbers of players in visible minorities in the footbag community (especially outside of their native countries). What are the minorities? Obviously there are a lot of Japanese players now, but outside of Japan there aren't many East Asians. There are no black players I can think of other than my and Andrew's prodigy, Manna Mpepo. And what about East Indians?

Chinese players:
-Kung Ho
-Waylon Lew
-Peng Peng Du (no longer plays?)
-Eric Chang
-Erik Chan (half)

Vietnamese players:
-Tuan Vu
-Tu Vu
-Dat Phan

Filipino players:
-Zeke Ibardaloza (no longer freestyles?)
-Manna Mpepo (half)

Yep, no more shred for me... or Tuan as far as I know.

Aren't Ken S. & Jeremy O. both half Japanese?

Without prejudice, it would do everyone some good to know what the term "minority" means, and, more importantly, what it doesn't mean:

Yeah my heritage is half Japanese. Dyalan from Sydney has Indian heritage, but from South Africa, I think. There have been quite a few Asian decent players in Australia - Jon Lee, Harvey Lee, Norman, Kenny, and I think Chris DeRusso (?) had some Filipino ancestors, but I don't think any of those guys play any more. There have also been one or two players of Maori descent in New Zealand I think. There's a guy from NZ in the 2001 Aus Champs video (VHS) that hits toe set double spinning stuff, but I forget his name.

Tuan stills plays.
We were both in Munich for a while in 2008 and we sessioned. He was still doing stuff like rubberman, paradox torques, and nuclear, I think. We also chatted at Worlds this past summer and he said he concentrates on net, but does still freestyle, and that his son plays, I think.

Wow, I don't know how his knees can take both disciplines! I finally met him at a Memphis net event a few years ago. He's really into MMA and he showed me a bunch of pics on his phone with a bunch of fighters he's met.

I'm not quite sure of the exact user names nor do I know if they play any longer

Yacine was half Algerian, and Sunil Jani was Indian-American. Yacine no longer plays, and I'm not sure about Sunil, but I'm of the impression he doesn't.

Luis Lipchak is half Chinese and half Mexican, and he still plays some.

Is Sunil in Baltimore now? I'm pretty sure I heard him on the public radio show "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" a few weeks back...

Sunil is back in Philly doing his residency for Ortho surgery I believe. But I may have the discipline wrong. We caught up briefly when he moved back to town and talked about trying to get together - but he's obviously wicked busy and so am I so it hasn't materialized yet. But he did say he wanted to shred when we got together, and I think he played at east coasts last year at a level most of us would dream of - could just be residual talent, or that he still plays a bit.
