As I recall, it's called "spyro gyro" because it's a combination of spyro swirl and gyro butterfly, so it is both spyro and gyro. Sypro supposedly once referred to a move that is spinning, followed by a near side dex, where that foot is put on the ground before the dex.

If I recall correctly, I think they both hit it for the first time during the same session, a few turns from each other. I'll ask Rick next time I play with him.

Actually, I think the concept of "spyro" didn't come along until a couple years later. I think this is one of those tricks that was named so long ago, there was no real consistency. Like how whirling dervish doesn't have a whirl in it. I'll check with Rick on this as well.

Yeah I just did a little research and that sounds about right. Spyro gyro was first hit by Kenny Shults, Rippen *and* Peter Irish in probably 1995. Brian Parsons suggested the name "spyro" to refer to spinning near plant tricks in 2001. Interestingly gyro whirling swirl was first hit in 1993, probably 2 years before gyro butterfly swirl was hit. I find the latter much easier.

I always assumed the name had something to do with the Jazz band named Spyro Gyra :

Even way before I played footbag there was something about that name that intrigued me, and I figured that footbaggers hitting gyro moves must have felt the same. I admit I don't know if I've ever even really heard any of their music -- I don't know what they sound like.

I have this feeling that I read somewhere just recently that there is actually something called a Spyro Gyra that has nothing to do with any jazz bands, something that pre-dates the band... like I had just learned this by coincidence very recently, but now I just can't remember, and I can't find it on-line, and I just can't remember what the hell it might have been. I feel like I was surprised to learn what the term Spyro Gyra really meant... but other than that feeling, I'm drawing a total blank. Its a frustrating feeling, and I can't be totally sure that I didn't just dream this...

See? Nothing at all to do with Jazz... And the funny thing is that I only read about this a few days ago. Prior to that, I had only ever heard of the jazz band (and the footbag move, of course). The question now is, is Spyro Gyro named after the band or the algae...?

I hit this trick today. I call it full muted spinning swirl. Does that sound right or should it be called something else?

I don't know if it's just because I'm old, but I think of muted as tricks where you have an uptime and a downtime dex with the same foot and you'd usually plant with that foot between dexes, but instead you don't. I'd call this something like spinning swirl without a plant, and I wouldn't really think of it as a different trick, but just a different style variation of spinning swirl, like how you can hit alternating clipper with or without plants and hops. For that matter, I don't really think of muted tricks, such as muted magellan, as a different trick to magellan. I think of these variances as "sub-tricks" if you like (analogous to sub-species in taxonomy).
