Ok Ken. Be ready to fall back 10 years ago...

We had a session with YAcine this week who was visiting montreal. We were like 8 ppl : Ianek, Sebastien, Marc Giard, Me, Yacine, François and more. That was fun. But here is the best part. This morning, too early, Yacine texted me and told : he, i'm close to your house. I'm coming and i'll give you a boxe of old VHS tapes of shred from the perios between 1998 and 2003. In the boxe, there was a video called : «Shred Alert» ;). I quiclky realized you made it haha. But thanks for that piece of history. It was awsome to see Sebastien playing.... 10 years ago. Seeing all those players from montreal that i don't even know. Totally awsome. If you wouldn't have made that VHS, i would never have seen any of those guy, and i wouldn't be able to laugh of the Sebastien haird cut hahaha ;).

So that's it!

Ha! Thanks for the blast from the past, Mathieu. Yacine is awesome and I miss him. I think the weirdest thing for me about Shred Alert now, is seeing Luc Legault as a freestyler, since he's now one of the top net players out there. And of course it's a trip to see Sebastien and myself playing close to 12 years ago. It's crazy to think about all the people who have left the scene since we released that video...

On that old fart note, I recently got taken down by my body. I was playing yesterday and everything was going fine, and then out of nowhere I pinched a nerve in my neck/shoulder area. Felt like an axe cut through me and stayed lodged in there. Same area I hurt last year...I hope this doesn't become recurring. I couldn't move my neck in any direction, and when I laid down in bed I couldn't get up. Called in sick today to rest up, and I feel a bit better, but it's disconcerting and kinda scary that this happens. Like, had I suffered the injury in the midst of doing something like headbutting a soccer ball, I'd know how to avoid it in the future. Anyway, I just hope I heal up by the weekend, and then i'll make a point to ease back slowly into playing.

Speaking of things falling apart, my current pair of G-Units are on their last legs. At NYJ I got Brian Bear to stitch them back together, and that held up very well for 4.5 months. But they're really getting to the point of no return. I have two pairs of new, backup G-Units. I'm hoping that'll last me around 3 more years of playing, but who knows. And then what? I don't want to go back to Lavers, but maybe in 3 years there'll be a better shoe out there, or maybe I'll be a net player and it won't matter. In any case, I'm going to retire this pair soon. I think it was my best pair of freestyle shoes to date. Career highlights of this pair include: beating Milan in circle comp at NYJ, finishing top 10 in freestyle events at Worlds '10, dropless routine at Funtastiks, my first beast (and then about 40 more), mobius x2, and a few dream tricks.

Lately I've been having fun in my sessions by going for new unique fearless sick 3s, inspired by Mark M. Here's the latest batch I got, from the session when I hurt myself. I don't think I'll be going for fearless any time soon, so this should be the last vid of them:

In other footbag news, I bought my plane tix to US Open, and will likely get my hotel set up this weekend too (anybody looking for a roommate?). While I'm a bit sad not to make it to Worlds, I'm going to USO and Euros, so that's some consolation. On one hand I'd like to start working on my routine, while on the other hand I kinda want to find a new song to use. I still have time.

My neck is feeling better everyday, as I'd hoped. I feel like I'm at about 80% recovered now. Still, it's scary that I can get waylaid so randomly, not to mention so hard.

My plan was to lay off footbag until the weekend, to buy my neck time to recover. On the drive home yesterday though, the weather report was saying it was going to snow overnight on Friday, and that Saturday and Sunday had predicted highs in the 40s. When I stepped out of my car, it was perfect spring weather out. I decided I'd take the risk and get in an outdoor shred, since I didn't want to pass up such good weather while I had the chance.

I took my time warming up, and laid down some ground rules to minimize the risk of pissing off my neck: no sets, no symposium, no paradox, and no ducking. For the most part I was very good about following these. I think I did 6 ducking clippers all session, but at least that's lower impact than some other ducking tricks I do. I decided to work on GDLOs and vortexes all session, and had a good time doing that.

I upgraded my internet connection this week, and the weather looks crappy, so I'm guessing I'm going to spend most of this weekend reading and playing Team Fortress 2. I'll likely do some light footbag at the gym, but I may not even film. Also looking forward to watching the Heat-Celtics series.

Adobe Premiere has been giving me fits lately; I think I have a hacked/damaged version. What drives me crazy is that the errors aren’t consistent, so there’s no way to predict if something is going to go wrong. For example: I’ll export a video, and it’ll come out choppy and missing clips. I’ll open Premiere, change nothing, export it again, and it comes out fine.

I have a minor video project I want to do, which involves a little editing, and I can’t even get to the export stage with it. I decided to put it on the backburner and do an easier video (only clips, no music, no transitions, no title cards, the absolute minimum everything)… only to have adobe crash and burn with that too. Argh. :x

Today I made a small video with a song (but no real editing), which came out a bit choppy. Whatever, it’s not worth it to me to try and fix it again. It’s mostly made up of some easy but weird tricks I hit over the weekend. The indoor footage is all from commercial breaks during the Heat-Celts game, which I was watching at the gym:

In sad news, my current pair of G-Units are all but dead. I think I’ll mod and play in a new pair, but occasionally use the current pair as walking shoes, so I can do casual shred. We’ll see… they look really beat up and bad now.

Modified has really died down lately. Some days there’ll be a total of like 10 new posts. Despite the lack of activity, I still like coming here to see how my friends are doing footbagwise, and I get a lot of ideas from it. Like in the video in this post, I only tried all those inside set moves because of a post Zeb made. Or the GS twirl, I was inspired to do those again after reading something Cross wrote. It’s also comforting for me to write my thoughts down in my blog, as it helps me make sense of where I am with my game/career, and identify where I want to be going.

Euros is in two months…I should start thinking seriously about a routine. Or maybe the fact that I require this degree of self-motivation is a sign that I shouldn’t force my practice.

nice video dude! inside pixie has is kind of a toughie. I liked GS twirl, and I was glad to read that I had something to do with it - what did I write that made you think of it? bedburger was my favorite.

I'm also kind of liking that my spellchecker doesn't have a problem with the word "bedburger".

Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment Matt. I was inspired to revisit GS twirl because of your spinning ducking reverse twirl trick.

This weekend we had summer weather throughout. Sunday was sunny and in the low 80s, and I even got to try out the pool at my apartment. One exciting thing about that, is it has a hottub with powerful jets, so I can massage my legs and back after playing. Sweet. Dan Chick and I are getting a regular weekly session going every Sunday. We had some false starts thanks to weather, and Mother's Day caused some cancellations, but I feel optimistic about this. We play in a huge park with lots of outdoorsy, young athletic people, and already people have come by showing interest. It's good exposure.

The other nice bit about our Sunday footbag session, is that Dan brings a net. Net's definitely a tough new challenge for me, but already I see some small improvements, and can eventually see myself taking it pretty seriously. The main problem I have now, is that my serve is a lot better than my reception, and Dan's reception game is also rusty. So while we both want to get good rallies and learn the set/spike part of the game, we have trouble getting there. Hopefully this will come with time. The other thing I'm hoping improves with time, is the flexibility of my right hamstring. Yes, I pulled it again lightly. I'm guessing I'll be good to go tomorrow, but today I'm going to rest it.

In freestyle news, I finally bought a pair of new insoles and set them up this weekend. That was looooong overdue. Today I'm going to mod my new g-units, so hopefully I'll have brand new footgear to shred in on Tuesday. Maybe I'll make a modding tutorial on YouTube. In bad news, I lost one of my Haniabags. :( I hate losing choice footbags more than almost anything else. Like, if I lose a hat or money, I can be reasonably confident that whoever finds it will get some use out of it. But a premium footbag? The best I can hope for is that some little kid finds it and enjoys throwing it against a wall. It's pretty much guaranteed that whoever finds it won't get the same value out of it that I would. Ugh.

I was able to twist Adobe's arm and do a video project yesterday. This footage is from a session over a week ago, when this funny 9 year old kid decided to hang out with me as I played. He wanted to be on the video, so he asked if he could dance in the background. He also provided me with some beatboxing entertainment. After a while I had lost concentration enough that I played basketball with him, which was also a trip. Anyway, I thought it'd be fun to try and capture the funniness/silliness of that interaction in a video.

That video was gold Ken.

I also liked the muted near whip, during the climactic dance sequence.

Thanks Jay and everybody else for the nice comments on my “Shred with Dominic” video. That kid was so incredibly funny, I just knew I had to make a video of him. I also think it’s cool that a video I made included a “climactic dance sequence.”

I haven’t posted in here in a while, for the simple fact that I haven’t been playing much footbag lately. I pulled my hamstring at my last net session (two Sundays ago), so I took a couple days off from playing. Then I spent a couple days playing basketball instead of footbag. I got in a session after work on Friday, but then Saturday and Sunday were rainy and in the low 40s. I could have played at the gym…but I didn’t. So in a 7 day span I only played once. Pretty lame. Within that time frame, I had a 5 day span without me so much as doing a clipper stall. For those of you keeping score at home:

ATWs:
Earth: 5
Ken’s feet: 0

My original plans for Memorial Day weekend fell through, so now it’s a possibility for me to go to Green Cup. With only ten days left to buy plane tickets though, it’s still up in the air. A change of scenery would be nice though, as would the chance to play with people who are better than me at net and freestyle, so I might just suck it up and overpay for flights. We’ll see.

I'm hoping to play everyday this week, so I can get back into shape on the chance I can make Green Cup. I also just feel better when I play regularly...I'm scared to think what I'll end up like if I stop exercising regularly. Sorry for the lack of video in this post. I have a ton of unedited video on my laptop, so hopefully I'll edit some of that this week and post it up.

The big news on my end, is that I decided to go to Green Cup. I couldn’t find cheap flights, but at the end of the day I sucked it up and just went for it. My pros and cons list was as follows:

Cons:
•Expensive flights.
•I don’t have a routine prepared.
•Current shoes are falling apart, not enough time to break in a new pair.

Pros:
•I don’t have to use any vacation time to attend.
•My girlfriend is out of town that weekend anyway.
•Great opportunity to play with several high level players (Clavens, Gatesman, Dean, Dale, Bear, etc.)

My ultimate justification though, was that money is just money, and when I die I won’t look back and regret overpaying for a weekend of footbag. I’d much more likely regret not attending a footbag tournament, especially during a time in my career when I’m healthy and still competitive.

Ideally, I’d like to compete in intermediate singles net, as well as all the open freestyle events. I’m not sure if the schedule/logistics of the tournament will make this possible (freestyle and net are at different locations for part of the tourney). Beyond that, I’m also not sure my legs are capable of doing both. I don’t have a very good track record of doing both in the same weekend. In any case, knowing that I’m competing a week from now is great motivation for me to stay focused and get ready. I’m making a point to sleep well, drink less alcohol, play footbag every day, and stretch (for net).

One thing working against me, is that I don’t have a good practice spot this week. The weather has been atypically bad lately, with highs in the 40s and 50s and lots of rain. Normally I’d just play inside at my gym, but my regular gym is closed for renovations, and my backup gym lacks a good spot for freestyle. The weather is supposed to improve over the weekend, so hopefully I’ll be able to train outside starting Saturday. Until then, I’m going to continue sneaking into rooms at the new gym, and continue getting kicked out when yoga classes come in. It’s a tough situation, but I’m determined to make it work.

I don’t have a routine or even a song ready yet. While I could exhume one of my old routines, which would be the safe play, I think I’d rather go with something new, even if I don’t have time to really develop strong choreo for it. I’m not particularly worried about circle comp, partially because I see myself as a huge underdog. Given the strength of the competition, I think it’ll be a challenge just to make finals. Yesterday I tried out a couple sick 3s,and after knocking the rust off some old concepts, I’ve found a couple combos which I’m happy with. I think if I pick two good ones and practice the key links over the next week, I’ll have a good shot of landing them in comp. I can’t even recall the last time I competed in sick 3…

I have a couple video projects on the backburner, but now I think they may have to wait until I'm done with Green Cup.

Here’s a token blog vid from yesterday. Mostly just trying to refresh certain concepts so I’ll have more variety for circle comp.

Some good and bad news on my end. OK, I guess it’s pretty much bad news, but I’m trying to look at the silver lining as good news.

Green Cup is this weekend, and I was hoping to compete in open freestyle, and intermediate net. Towards that end, I worked on my routine and sick 3 last week, and on Sunday I met up with Dan to practice net. That was going well until I tweaked my left knee on an awkward kick. I had given myself a poor set on a service return, which set the bag on the left side of my body. Instead of going for it with a left outside, I went for it with a far reaching right inside kick. I didn’t feel immediate pain, but for the rest of the day and Monday I couldn’t put weight on it, I walked with a severe limp, and I couldn’t straighten my leg all the way without getting shooting pain in my knee.

The good news? No swelling, so I don’t think I tore any ligaments. The other good news, is I’ve already made some progress. I’m still limping noticeably today, and I still can’t fully extend my left leg without getting pain, but now at least I can put some weight on that leg.

I looked into canceling my Green Cup tickets, and it looks like a $150 change fee. Given that I paid $250+ for my flight, it doesn’t seem worth canceling. So my plan is to lay off my leg completely until the weekend, fly out to Green Cup, and play it by ear. Absolute best case scenario, I’ll be able to compete in everything by combining advil and adrenaline. More realistic, but still optimistic scenario, is I go out and do intermediate net, and just help judge freestyle. I’d give myself a 35% chance of that. Most likely scenario though, is that I go out and don’t compete at all. While that’d suck, at least I’d get to see friends, and that beats staying home in Denver feeling sorry for myself.

While it’s a sucky situation, I think I’m looking at it with the right attitude. I didn’t hurt myself by doing anything stupid. I’m approaching my recovery conservatively. I can’t do anything to go back and undo the injury, so now I just need to deal with it as positively and intelligently as I can.

In more positive footbag news, I recently filmed a G-Unit modding tutorial. Maybe I can use the downtime from my injury to put that together, though lately Adobe is acting up even more than usual. Speaking of making footbag videos, here is my latest effort. The shred and the editing aren’t as good as my last two videos, but overall I was happy with the final product. Some weird tricks, and some spinning stuff I liked:

Gonna rest up through Friday…crossing my fingers I’ll make some more progress healing for Green Cup. See a bunch of you in a few days!

Thanks for all the well-wishes guys! They must have had a positive effect, since my knee has healed faster than I ever could have hoped for. I’m not 100% or anything, but I no longer limp, and playing this weekend is a definite possibility. Even though there was no visible swelling when I got injured, I still took advil for the first few days, to reduce any potential internal swelling. I also increased my sleep, decreased my alcohol, kept weight off that leg initially, and then when it could take some weight, forced myself to try and walk without a limp (in order to strengthen it, and not have my other muscles overcompensate).

All of this seems to have had a positive effect, as yesterday I felt strong enough to try out some light footbag. I had a very short session, mostly BOP and spins. No adverse effects the next day, and the knee held up well while playing. If anything, it felt a little…tired? Not sore, but just sort of tired right after, and the next day. I experimented with a range of motions, and most didn’t hurt. Double downs with that leg seemed iffy, as did blender/dyno, but interestingly enough whirls were fine. I also obviously avoided doing anything symposium on that leg. If anything, I felt like lack of stamina and stiff shoes affected me more than my knee. This was my first session trying to break in my new G-Units, and they’re still incredibly stiff. I’ve decided I’m going to take this pair instead of my broken in pair to Green Cup. The way I see it, the old pair are more comfortable and I might play better in them…but it’s also more likely that I could slip in them, especially if the floor is at all slick. My old pair have almost 0 traction left. This new pair may result in more drops, but at least I’d be sure I won’t slip, and that’s a big deal when your knee isn’t 100%.

I also decided that I won’t be playing net at green cup. On one hand, net would seem safer/easier for my body, since it’s less likely that I’d push too hard, given that I’m a beginner. On the other hand, I hurt my knee playing net, partially because my basics aren’t good enough, so it seemed needlessly dangerous to try playing net again when I’m not 100% healthy. I also want to have the flexibility to scratch at any point if my knee starts bothering me, and I think I could do this more easily in freestyle. It looks like there may not be enough entrants for intermediate net to happen anyway, but I wanted to make my decision beforehand regardless.

Tonight I fly out to Green Cup, so naturally it’s getting increasingly hard to focus at work. I really don’t know what to expect from this weekend, but I have a feeling I’m gonna have fun. I figure at a minimum I’ll get to watch lots of footbag, and hopefully I’ll even be able to play and compete too. I’d like to film a lot, and make a video when I get back. Pretty much as long as I don’t make my injury worse, I think it’ll be good times.

Don’t like making video-free posts, so here’s a clip of a cool combo I hit last week:

See a bunch of you at Green Cup real soon! :)

Green Cup was just an amazingly fun weekend. I can’t recall the last time I had this much fun at a footbag weekend. I’m so glad I went. I filmed a lot, but rather than pepper my write-up with videos, I think I’m just gonna keep this wordy. Old school. I may insert videos for the important parts.

Green Cup: Prelude
I made the decision to attend Green Cup pretty last minute. My original plan was to use the tournament as a way of building experience competing in net, and also to force myself to get my routines prepared for USO and Euros. I had a stroke of bad luck though, as I injured my left knee playing net the Sunday before competition. For the first few days, I was limping badly, and it looked unlikely that I’d play at all. Then, my leg made huge progress healing on Thursday and Friday. By Saturday morning, the knee felt weak and tired, but it didn’t hurt at all. I knew that a combination of advil and adrenaline would enable me to play. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Green Cup: Friday
Put in a regular workday Friday, but by the end of it my mind was already in Oakland playing footbag. I get off work, go home, go over my packing checklist, and reward myself with an hour of playing Team Fortress 2 before heading to the airport. I listen repeatedly to my two routine songs, try and sleep through as much of my flight as I can, and finally land in SFO. Unlike most airports I’m familiar with, there’s no designated “passenger pickup” area. I go to the information booth, where I have this interaction:

Me: Excuse me, where is passenger pickup?
Info: That’s illegal.
Me: No no, I mean, my friend is picking me up from the airport. Is there a designated area for that?
Info: *blank look*
Me: So…do people just meet up to get picked up outside?
Info: Yes.
Me: And what’s the name of that area outside, so I can direct my friend where to meet me?
Info: Outside.
Me: Wait, this is the Information Booth, right?
Info: *blank look*
Me: *looks around for hidden cameras, shares commiserating look with fellow exasperated travelers*

Despite the best efforts of the Information Booth to not help me, I manage to meet up with Brian without too much difficulty. On the ride to his place I realize I’m hungry, so we swing by an In-N-Out burger. I’ve been pescatarian (only fish and veg) since the new year, but it was past midnight by now, I was hungry and tired, and I figured if I was flying out all the way to California, I may as well eat something I knew was good and was craving. So I had a double double, and it was delicious. Best fast food burger ever. We also picked up a bottle of Fin Du Monde, which hit the spot, since I needed a drink. I crash on Brian’s floor, and the last thing I see as I rest my head on the pillow is a ceiling fan, which I take as a good omen.

Next: Saturday.
