Balancing School Work and Shred??

Post by F[uns]tylin' Eclectic »

I'm a Junior Penn State Student... well, I guess I'll be a Senior in a few days when this semester is over.

One huge problem I have is balancing footbag time and school work. I'm a good student and I receive mostly A's, B's and the occasional C (C stands for Calculus :\ ).

I try to tell myself "only session for an hour" then that becomes 2 hours, then 3.... ughhh. I also try to get one homework assignment finished then reward myself with drilling a set 30 times in my room or by letting myself watch a short footbag video.

Anyway, I was curious how all the student footbag players balance their school work and shred time?

Let your thoughts flow..

By not making posts asking how to balance footbag and school when you should be studying for finals.

I was not at all a model student so I can't really give you advice here.

Play and do homework at the same time of the day. Then if you have time or want to you can play more at night. Basically get into a routine which helps you avoid doing nothing. Problem solved.
Another solution is to too sleep less. Instead of 8 hours or whatever cut it down to 7. There is another hour of footbag.

I guess I'm a good student, with a distinction average at uni. I use footbag to help me study, but I don't have big sessions. Instead I'll spend an hour or so studying, and then get up and have a short footbag session - 10 minutes to half an hour, then go back and study for another hour or so and repeat. I can do this pretty much all day, but if I try to study for many hours without a break I find it much more difficult.

If I'm doing stuff that involves a lot of waiting around I use that time for footbag as well. For example the other day I was doing some testing of a photosynthesis model comparing C3 and C4 photosynthesis. The model was designed very (too) accurately, which meant that whenever you changed the settings you had to wait a minute for everything to stabilise, so I would press the button to change the light levels or CO2 concentration, get up and see how many consecutive flipside xbdy rakes I could hit, sit down and log the results, press the button again, and then have another go.

I'd have to say though, that my approach to this is aimed at making sure I can study effectively for as long as possible, rather than play footbag for as long as possible.

The other thing worth considering is watching TV. I basically never watch TV. Use that time to study or play footbag. Some people talk about when they're exhausted they just want to do some mindless activity and "veg out" watching TV. While I understand that feeling, I am sure that if you decide to play footbag despite feeling that way, you'll very quickly get in a good habit and the feeling of wanting to "veg out" will quickly go away once you start playing.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Tony: Touche.... touche...

Corey: I already get little to no sleep, for the most part, because I'm doing homework. So that won't work, but thanks for the thoughts.

Jeremy: I like that idea... rather than having one big session, and rushing to do as much homework and studying as possible, I'm going to start having 10-30 minute sessions throughout the entire day. I really think that will work for me. Pretty cool to hear about how you conduct experiments and practice while you're waiting for results. I have a feeling I'll be doing that in the future, when my work gets more hands-on. As for the TV thing, I'm not like most people who need tv in their life. I haven't watched a full-television show for I can't say how long. I'm not a big fan of tv at all. It seems like all of my non-footbag friends from high school make every day consist of smoking a bong and watching a shitload of tv. It depresses me that so much of the work is sucked into the idiot box. It's name suits it.

Alright dickhead, I get it haha Thanks for your contribution, Nick :P Can't wait til you're home from school this summer so we can do epic amounts of shredding without having to worry about schoolwork. Check out Bob's post in Journeys & Footbag Travels. We're doing it up right this summer.

One thing I'm trying to do this year for finals is make voice documents of my study topics so I am free to browse the web, yoyo or play footbag or whatever while I'm listening to the material.

I have the very same problem, what I try to do is wake up earlier than normal to kick for a couple hours, then I go to school, I have 15 mins in between classes to kick, once I get home I "try" to get as much hw done as possible so I can free up my day

This seldom works because let's face facts... footbag > homework :P
Why circle jerk when you can circle kick??
