Nucleus Vs. Lavers for Sole Delays
Just wondering about the Nucleus... I'm really into using my soles and other unusual surfaces, so does anyone know if they're nice for sole delays? I love Lavers, and can do sole stuff pretty decently in them, but I'm wondering if Nucleus is more compatible for soles and would help me step up my sole game.
Please throw in your opinions.

Nucleus out of the box require proper form. Tricked out nucleus are more promising. I am in the process of tricking out the ones I used at the Tony Hawk event. I'll post some photos when I am done. The mods we did this weekend to play at the event worked great. Even in the rain on grass!!!
As far as the sole? It really doesn't matter. You can't feel the bag through any shoe's rubber sole, but the nucleus are thinner and more flexible in that region.
I wouldn't say they suck as much as they still need some love to make them work for your game. I found G-Units to be the best so far. My Laver's are long gone under my bed collecting dust bunnies.
I am looking forward to playing with the new nucleus mods to see what kind of return I can get for all my modding efforts.

They look cool, but I don't think the idea of the clipper rails. That mod would make some of the xbd sole stuff I do pretty difficult since I go from clipper to xbd sole and the bag ind of slides around my shoe to get to the sole. That's sweet if these work for you, but I have a feeling this mod would eff up my form and I feel as if I would be displeased.
If you have to roll from clipper to sole then you already have bad form. Each trick should have a separation unless it is a ROLLING trick like Jon does.
What I have found is that out of the box the clipper has a roll off spot. This is due to the way the molds for this sole were made. They tapper to the bottom so they pop out of the mold faster in production. It is a manufacturing trick. However, this has caused quite a bit of disappointment. A rail fixes this, this rail fixes this. Just ask Honza, Evan or Dave since my opinion isn't taken very seriously. (Which is silly given I have played for over 13 years)
The net is icing on the cake for me. I switched to G Units and love the no-brainer clipper stalls. Even with a rail I was having issues with bounce off. Yes bounce off! The material was too taunt for my foot causing a trampoline effect. The net is more forgiving and the cut out acts just like G Units and catches everything.
If you are worried about form then you must be competing? If so, I wouldn't recommend either G Units or Nucleus for competition. Lavers are the only way to go. In the history of footbag I don't recall a single World Footbag Champion playing in anything other than Lavers since they were introduced to the sport. (I could be mistaken, and I said World Champ, I realize Dave plays in them but he does not hold the World Title)
I still think they need work in the cushioning department. They act much like wrestling shoes in that they lack a mid sole and you can feel the ground in them. A good insert should correct this problem, as the shoes are counter sunk on the inside to accept a thick insert without it riding up your clipper area like every other shoe on the planet.
BTW - I do not work for Nucleus, I am in as much search for a Laver replacement as the next guy. So far The G Units are my fav. If I can get the Nucleus to behave similar then I have a new shoe, otherwise I have to spend months on the internet waiting for someone to post some G Units on Ebay or Craigs List.

Thanks for filling me on on that Damon. I didn't really think about it, but I do a twitch set to get into flapper stalls from clipper. I examined it today and realized I don't roll into it. Sounds like Nuclei have their upsides and downsides, as with every shoe. I misunderstood the net idea, that sounds intriguing. But it looks like they would be a little fragile because of the net, am I right?
All in all, I think I'm gonna stick with my Lavers. Bob Riefer told me about how some people take a belt-sander to their soles to slim them down a bit. Any ideas on that method?

I mainly have a problem with the support of the sole. Clippers are not a problem and neither is the toe. It doesnt seem that these shoes were made with footbag in mind
I also ordered two pairs, got one that was the wrong size, Had horrible customer service, and still have a brand new pair that doesnt fit and is not used and they still owe me $40

i rocked nucleus for several months and i must say they really helped my clipper form! they're light and flexible, and if your form is there they will not disappoint. if not, they'll make you fix your technique and hence make you a better player!Webslinger wrote:They do not suck at all, it depends just on your style... Agreed(with Ken). I still like my Units the best. They require the most modding, but man the results are butter.
We actually took a drill and drilled large holes through the bottom of the Laver. Anything to make them more flexible and lighter. I have even taken a razor blade to the bend in the shoe's sole and cut large relief gashes to make them bend at the toe easier.
Today China makes a light pair of Lavers that don't require all of this additional none sense.
The Nucleus is missing a mid sole and for heavier players this is a serious stability problem. It hurts to land in these shoes. Lighter players don't need as much cushioning.
The net mod didn't take anything away from this shoe. They are canvas and tough as nails. What I like about canvas is that they wrap around the foot tightly. Leather G-Units do not hold as tight to the foot without tying them extremely tight. Lavers without the brocka mod also wrap the foot tightly, but can later slide around once sweat gets to the socks. This never happens in Nucleus.

Nick,
If you have a pair of old lavers that you dont use I recommend you try this. Take a very large serrated knife and cut off the bottom off the shoe. There are stitches that connect the insole of the shoe to the sides. If you can avoid cutting those while removing the foamy bottom youll have a really good shoe for sole stalls. I was messing around doing some weird mods on my shoe and I cut some stitches near the toe so I left that piece of the bottom of the shoe there so that when I cushion for sole stalls the insole doesnt get too out of control. If your mod isnt perfect on the first try--and that is pretty much impossible yo will need scissors the serrated knife amd a butter knife. These three tools will help you remove the excess foam stuck to the bottom of the insole. Once the mod is done you should have a really light should that makes for easy inside and outside stalls while providing you with more flexible toes and flappers.
The only problem is that it takes like 45-60 minutes and it is easy to slice your finger. I would do it to my normal lavers but i do not know about the durability.

Well, it's been a while since I started this thread, and I've now tried out every (well, all the main shoes worn for freestyle) and can honestly say, Nucleus has the best sole for flappers and sole tricks. However, for shredding, they were good, but Units are so much better. Units are nice for flappers too though.
Nothing compares to the Nuke soles for flapper tricks though. So butter.
Here is an ALL-FLAPPER SESSION I had a little while ago in my Nukes...
So if you, the reader, use a lot of flapper stuff, and have the same question I had, I recommend Nukes as a flapper shoe, but Units as a main shred shoe.
