Hey Pasquar...would love to...but terrible timing...

Vegas Jam is on that weekend, so I'll be out of town. In fact, I think a lot of the footbaggers in San Diego will be heading there. I'm not sure if Abshire is going or not. If he isn't, you should definitely schedule a session with him.

sorry...I won't be able to shred for a while. I think I tore both of my thigh muscles :(

I tried doing a light session last saturday and couldn't do anything other than toe stalls and some clippers. But even those were kinda painful and made things worse. :/

finally some good stuff worth posting :)

May 7, 2011:

We had a light session today, as all of us were either injured, or just recovering from injury. Richie didn't kick today due to injury, but came out anyways to watch and give pointers.

I'm glad he did, 'cause towards the end of the session (after 30+ minutes of working, listening to his advice, and refining my technique), I was able to hit the following (all new combos):
  • dimwalk > blur (both good sides)
  • ripwalk > ripwalk (good > flip)
  • ripwalk > ripwalk (flip > good)
I've been getting injured on and off since my last blog entry, so it took a while to get back and hit something worth mentioning.

One thing I noticed is how effective heat is to muscle recovery. Before the Vegas Jam, I seriously didn't think I could have done any kicking, but after several consecutive days of using a heat pad (the kind you get at Costco that lasts 8 hours), plus some jacuzzi time, I was able to play somewhat.

Since then, my thighs have fully recovered, and I'm able to do whirls and other stuff again, but now my left calf is in pain...I think it's just from overusing it, so I'm forcing myself to use my flip side more.

Shin splints are still a problem, so I gotta keep reminding myself to watch my form and do toe raises.

I'm slowly eliminating 2 ADDs from my game (other than warming up, obviously). Hopefully by the next footbag event, I'll be able to shred guiltless.

Edit: i noticed an error on my previous entry. I can hit smear, no smog (in fact, don't even remember what smog is).

Earlier last week,
I had a night session with Abshire, and something he said intrigued me...after I mentioned that my right calf, shin hamstrings were bothering me, he said something like "you better watch out for your right leg...that's your driving leg...you don't want to be learning to drive with your flip leg on the freeway"

Then I thought..."well, I better start learning to drive with my flip leg, just in case I ever hurt my right leg so badly I can't drive wit it".

Interesting enough, after a couple days trying it out, I realized that because of the position of the pedals, I need to hit the accelerator pedal with the side of my foot...essentially in a inside/clipper stall position.

So I've been driving like that for several days now...and I think that has helped with my ankle crank a bit. I'm still smoothing out the sensitivity on my flip leg, but as long as I'm not in traffic, I have been driving like that and it's been fine.

Yesterday
I had the honor to shred with Milan...it was a huge eye opener. Most of the time I was unsure of what tricks he was doing, but I could still follow the components. It made me realize how important it is to learn even those tricks that I don't really like...because when you expand on it, you get something else completely awesome.

Milan gave me some pointers on form, and I also observed a lot from his shred...some things I want to keep in mind:

- always keep my toes crunched on clipper stalls (I didn't realize I tend to get relaxed when using clippers in bigger tricks)
- keep the bag close to your body (even when you can have it further). Particularly on stepping sets
- stamina/cardio is important
- if you get bored with a trick, put it in a combo to make it fresh
- being a bit crazy (aka...determined) is more than OK

Today
Went to kick during lunch...I decided to revisit my basics. I decided to do 1000 reps of each trick before I move on (eg: after I've done 1000 clippers, I won't keep drilling it...but I'll still use it as part of other tricks...like butterfly and stepping). What I did (total, not in a row):

- 100 toe stalls alternating
- 100 clippers (good)
- 100 clippers (flip)
- some 2 adds and short runs

I think that wasn't too bad considering I kicked last night and should be resting today.

Hmm...I don't think so  ?

I should have mentioned that before I tried switching foot, I can already drive the following ways very comfortably (and with zero accidents):

- standard driving (two hands on wheel, right foot)
- left-hand driving
- right hand driving
- left-hand while pen spinning (check my YouTube channel)
- handless driving (using left leg to steer, curves must be < 45 degrees)
- driving and spinning two pens (handless driving, plus spinning one pen in each hand)

Each time I try a new driving technique, I only add one variable/uncertainty, allowing me to keep my driving pretty safe (safer than people talking on their cellphones, anyways :P ) And I did try this on empty streets until I was sure I could handle it.

I didn't feel like I did enough during yesterday's lunch session, so I did another session at night. More drilling to get basics really down.

50 Osis on each side. Trying to freeze them instead of scooping them up like I used to.

I wanted to do 100 each, but around 40, my shins started hurting bad.

Today my shins are pretty bad. I'll probably take the day off to rest. Or maybe I'll try single dexes and take a break from clipper stuff.

Haven't posted anything on this blog for almost a month. Been super busy at work, so putting a couple sessions a week was already tough. And I haven't really hit anything worth posting until today.

Today was a good day. I hit two new tricks, and a few good combos.

whirl > ripwalk
dimwalk > blur (I think...it was either dimwalk or butterfly)

Then towards the end of the session, i started trying fearless tricks...and I finally hit two:

phoenix
blurriest

Phoenix was my first 5 ADD...so I was already stoked. Then within 20 minutes, I was able to hit blurriest...my first triple dex (not super clean or comboable, but I was able to catch the bag in my hand)

I've been working on 3 fearless tricks for the last few weeks, so finally hitting two of them was really rewarding (the other one that I'm close, but haven't hit yet is Matador).

I know my tripless (or even guiltless game) isn't consistent yet, so I'll be working on them...but hitting some harder tricks just gave me the burst of excitement I need to drill my basics and get them consistent.

[Edit]Oh yeah...I think one of the things that helped (besides the obvious practice) is that I told myself I wouldn't buy my next pair of Lavers until I hit my first fearless. I've been wanting the new Lavers for a while, so that helped me push harder.

had a lunch session and night session yesterday...mostly drilling my basics trying to get better form and improving my stamina.

- 50 clippers each side
- 30 clippers b2b (3-step)
- 100 legovers b2b (50 each leg)

then did some runs and hit a new trick

- atom smasher

I should have stopped there, but I got too excited to finally hit that trick and kept going.

I end up falling badly while trying to hit whirling swirl. My ankle is in a bit of pain right now, so I'll probably take a few days off and see how it goes.

Overall, it was a good day...I feel like I'm improving.

had my usual 2hr+ session yesterday with Damon and Richard. My ankle was still a bit more sensitive than usual, but it didn't stop me from doing anything.

the session was mostly for runs/combos...didn't hit any new tricks or any of my previous fearless, but I still felt accomplished.

- 15 tiltless (never really counted before, so I think this is my record)
- ripwalk b2b
- open switch > open switch > double orbit
- smear > dimwalk > blur (new)
- blur > legbeater (new)
- whirling swirls (3 in a session...most I've done so far)

Been a while since I posted here...

I was getting better at my ripwalks, being able to use them in more combos than before.

some things I hit in the last month:

- paradon > ripwalk
- ripwalk b2b (multiple times in a session...aiming for 3 b2b)

But then...almost 2 weeks ago (8/27), I strained my quads. I guess I should have seen it coming...I did almost 3 hrs of footbag during the day, followed by a 2 hr broomball game later the same night.

Anyways...the day after I could barely walk or lift my legs, so I've been taking it easy on my legs, and applying lots of heat to help speed the healing.

Yesterday, my legs were feeling better so I decided to put a light session. Interestingly, my right leg has healed a lot faster than my left. I was able to do a lot of tricks with my right leg...but...hardly anything with my left.

Even toe stalls had to be very careful with my left, and I didn't try any dexes because it would hurt.

On a positive note, I've been working out more since I can't kick (at least the muscles that I can use). I also bought a Sports Psychology book that has proved to be quite interesting and applicable to footbag (got a deal since Borders is closing).
