Jolly Green Footblog

Post by tristand »

HELLO MODIFIED!! This is Tristan "Jolly Green" Delaney reporting, fresh from traveling from the Slums of Shaolin (BSC, baby!) back to my homeland of sunny Ventura, (Southern) California. I have never kept a diary of my footbag activities, but since I'm home with no job, no money, and nothing to do for the next two months, I've decided to keep in touch with all of y'all with this handy-dandy footblog.

Anyways, let's get started with the practice updates:

Thursday, June 23, 2011:
Decided that after a week and a half of no footbag since NYFA's Jam a couple weeks ago (which was awesome), I decided to get my ass off my couch and shred. Wrote up a few drills, focusing on the basics.

3x50 inside kicks
3x50 toe kicks
3x50 outside kicks
2x30 toe stall-> (op) inside stall -> (op) outside stall repeat
2x30 clipper -> (op) ossis repeat
2x50 inside kicks
2x50 toe kicks
2x50 outside kicks

There was supposed to be more, but my left shin started acting up and really affected my flip clipper. I had the same pain on the Sunday of the NYFA Jam, but I thought it would have gone away. Not sure what it is, but I'll keep an eye on it and go see a doctor if it becomes worse.

Good job dude. Also, great meeting you at NYFA. Keep to your basics and you'll be surprised... So will everyone else 8O

I'm glad you're doing it. And you'll be glad you're doing it.

Keep kicking dude. Oooo! Post videos if you can. Your style is sick. Love the dragon stuff.

Keep it unusual.

Thanks for the suggestions, Doug, I wish I had seen them earlier. I'll keep them in mind for future drill sessions.

Today was a pretty gnarly day, it began with a 3 mile run on the beach with my little brother. I tried keeping up with him, but he's a Marine and I'm out of shape as fuck. Immediately after we got back I decided to kick around a little bit. I only really did like two drills but they took me each like half an hour to even get my maximum number of repetitions.

Warmed up with 2x50 toe kicks, inside kicks, outside kicks.
Clipper > SS Mirage >> Repeat. (Personal Record: 10 in a row)
Clipper > Far Legover >> Repeat. (Personal Record: 7 in a row)
Cooldown with 50 toe, inside, outside kicks.
100 assorted kicks (mostly inside and toe).

I also fooled around with osis b2b (PR: 8 or 9?), gyro clipper > clipper >> rpt as well as maybe 5 minutes of unstructured shred, but the vast majority of my time was spent on the two drills listed (more than half hour each). Surprisingly I found that I enjoyed (almost) endless drilling, and this gives me some hope about consistently drilling this summer and in the future.

The shred session lasted about 2 hours, so I was on my feet and active for close to 3.5 hours straight. Man am I tired! I'll have to see how I feel tomorrow, but I hope I can do a similar workout in the morning. Best thing was that my left shin didn't bother me at all!

Does anybody do any cross-training (running/cycling/etc) in addition to footbag? I feel like a big part of why my strings are so short (usually no more than 12-15 contacts between drops) is a stamina issue in addition to a not drilling issue. I am most concerned with rest and what drills I could do on rest days. I suppose those days will be simply a shitload of kicks and other 1-ADD moves for now, and then I can progress to slightly more complex moves when my legs get stronger.

Great to see you're planning on drilling this summer. Don't worry, clip> far legover rpt x7 will turn into rpt x17 before you know it. With legover, try to execute as small a dexterity as you can. The smaller the dex, the more controlled the delay

Also, for increasing the strength of your dragons, try alternating dragon delays. It's difficult to release just right, but you'll start to get the hang of it.

Also, cross-training... I do a lot of kayaking (for my upper body), and slacklining (for balance). For stamina, I'd keep running with your brother. Running is great for building stamina.

Looking forward to keeping up with your blog.

I'll buy you a cupcake when you hit Dragonstein, you can hold me to my word

Also, if I have any cool dragon-y ideas in the future, I'll pass them down to you.

Wednesday, June 29:
Decided to incorporate a few new concepts into my drills today. Felt really good and had a good 1.5 hour session in my backyard.
  • Warmup 3x50 toe, outside, inside kicks
4x20 mirage > ss mirage rpt
    4x30 infinity
    4x20 osis
30 minutes trying to max out far legover > mirage > ss butterfly rpt (Max 7)
After that I was pretty tired but I also tried fooled around with a couple other drills:
  • spinning clipper > ducking clipper rpt
far clipper > dragon > clipper > pickup
gyro clipper > gyro clipper rpt
Doing the infinities made me realize how bad my endurance is. Hitting anything above 10 contacts left me out of breath. Gotta do more aerobic activity to get my lungs in shape.

Was great to meet you at NYFA bro! I think that this regimented drilling that you've started is really going to pay off. I'm struggling with the longevity of my strings (endurance) but, as Nick mentioned, I think that running will help out in that area, as will just plain pushing your strings as far as you can and striving to add one more to that number each time.

Saturday September 10, 2011

It's been a while since I updated this footblog (since June, are you serious?), so let me give a brief recap of what has been happening so far:
  • Went to USO in Boise on my way back to Boston after about a month of no playing. Competed horribly but met a good number of the West Coast players and played a ton of fb. Worked on some connections into and out of dragon (stepping refracting dragon and dragon pdx mirage mainly). Also hit torquex2, which was my first time hitting anything other than clipper out of torque.
I hit blender a couple weeks ago after I moved to Long Island for school. I realized that I needed to try and hit my ossis super frigid after the dex, and after that it just made so much sense. Can't wait to hit that consistently
Anyways, I decided to do some drills today because it was finally nice outside, and my legs were itching to kick. here's what I did:
  • 2x50 kicks (inside & toe)
50 toe stalls, 50 clipper stalls (each side)
5x10 toe mirage each side, 50 legovers from toe
    20 pickup->ss clipper->far legover->ss clipper rpt
    20 ossis b2b
20 gyro clipper -> ss clipper rpt
    10 pdx mirage->far dragon->clipper rpt
Total time was about one and a half hours, not sure how much of that was me actually playing and me cursing at myself because of stupid drops. Man, sometimes this sport can be so frustrating. Just need to keep at it I guess. I'll try and make it out to NYC in a couple of weeks, but for right now I only have $50 to hold me over until then, so I'm stranded in Long Island for now (NOOOOOOOOO!!!!).
