The Fast and the Furious: Operation El Kemino, Tokyo Edition
Great 3 hour session today. Funny how up and down this sport can be. I spent the first half hour slowly warming up and getting used to my "new" (3 years old) bag, because my favorite one has a hole, and has lost a ton of filling. Luckily this one is working great, even though it's much lighter. Just played, but occasionally worked on phoenix>fog, furious, and whirr.

Another great park session. It's nice to know that the bad sessions like Tuesday are the bad ones, and not the mediocre ones.
Not a lot of highlights, other than good strings, and whirring swirl 2nd try.
Finally broke down and worked on barraging clipper to get better at furious. Man that's hard, but it should be worth it. Coolest thing I got was:

Haven't played for about a week because I haven't felt like it. I can feel myself losing the reignited spark I found 2 months ago. I don't think I have the passion anymore to seriously practice, but I still really enjoy playing and will continue to push myself when I do. Plus it's the most strenuous exercise I have, so why not at least play for fun all the time.
Played today at school for about 2 hours and filmed a bit. Didn't get anything great, but had a good time.
Looking forward to USO, but more so to play with people and not to compete.

Played the past two days and having fun with it.
I think I've decided what I want to do with footbag, and unless I get another spark like the beginning of the summer, I'll keep at it like this. I'm going to just play for fun and exercise now, but not practice seriously. I haven't been feeling guilty about not playing enough in a week, or forcing myself to practice for longer than I feel like I can, and it's really been nice. I have fun when i play, and I get frustrated much less.
At this point I'd rather focus on music, but I'll still probably be playing 3 or 4 times a week. I'm still going to play hard and push myself and go to tournaments, but use them more as meet and greets rather than competitions.
Still looking forward to USO and seeing everybody. Just a few weeks now =)
Oh, I forgot, I had a few neat highlights:
alpine bw bs
pixie dolomite bs
tomahawk>osis>infinity rpt>mullet>osis>infinity>mullet

Thanks Nick. When I wrote that post, it felt akin to announcing my retirement. But here I am having had 3 great sessions this week and having a great time with footbag =)
Great session at the park today, even though my shorts got so soaked with sweat they started to fall from the weight.

whirling drifter bsos (=O)

both scorpion's tails and blurriests linked genuinely (I think it was a schmoe out of all of them)>osis while pulling shorts up>a few tricks>fusion>few tricks>foot other fusion

Man I'm really jonesin' to shred, but I have to work another hour. It's nice to play when I want to, even if it's about the same amount that I was making myself.
Also, I think jonesin' is a funny term. I think it used to be used like "I'm jonesin' (for crack)" but it's just a silly word now.

New tricks I hit at USO before I forget:
blazing torque first try ever (on youtube from Zac)
symp blazing drifter
blazing blender (which I hit on my 5th and final try in Big 1)
something else on the first day, but I can't remember (edit: whirling torque)
I'm at Zac's house now and we just played. There might be a video from it.
I had a fun time, and I'll do more thoughts on it when I'm home next week.

I got in last night after another long day of travel.
I've been gone since Thursday the 11th. I flew to Boise for USO, and then on Monday morning, Zac, Cody and I drove back to Missouri/Kansas where I stayed with Zac until yesterday. The whole thing was very nostalgic to the similar trip we did in 2009 (though I only did half of the drive this time, not knowing I was going to Zac's when I booked my plane ticket) but was still fun in its own right. We're both a lot different now, after having gone through a couple of years of college, and likewise, footbag is different for us too. Last time we played at least 5 times but in between Tuesday and Saturday we only managed 2 sessions, and the second one was cut short by some bad shin splints on Zac. Even without a lot of footbag, it was good just to hang out and do normal stuff.
In lieu of a full writeup, here are some fun moments and thanks:
-"You used trigonometry!" - Rory, after getting a goal in foosball at Sunny & Darrel's place. Had a fun time hanging and perusing your many lists.
-Thanks to Zeb for organizing/running the tournament and to his brother Zac for putting me up for multiple nights and being good hosts in general.
-"Oh shit, is that on camera?" - Steve Goldberg. Thanks for being both a respectable adult role model, and also the youngest person at the tournament. One of the funniest people I've ever met, and I really enjoyed judging with you... even if I missed the first 20 seconds of every routine in the aftermaths of your jokes
-"'My parents are anesthesiologist' 'Oh man, that job puts me to sleep'" - Ken Somolinos. Thanks again for letting me room with you, and having the perfect brand of humor for me (ie bad humor =P). I always enjoy just talking and hanging out with you, especially when we first got to the park on Sunday.
-Chris, for sponsoring a dinner with the 3 Zs (Zeb, Zac and Zac) at some local Italian place. It was honestly my favorite part of the whole tournament, even if I can't remember any of the endless jokes and riffs.
-Red, for the half hour we got to really talk right before you left on the last night. It can be hard to find intelligent talk at footbag tournaments, but you're a really engaging person, regardless of what you're talking about, and I really enjoyed that whole conversation.
-Nick and Justin for playing with me for 2ish hours on Sunday. That was by far the best session I had all weekend and also the most fun I had while in a circle. You two are great to kick with, and it was fun to push each other through the heat. Likewise to Jim and Jorden, for the brief sessions we had on Sunday
-Kevin Crowly, if nothing else, than for the insane 10 minutes worth of stories on Sunday evening. It was always a pleasure to hang out with you though, you're a really fun guy. I hope some of those pictures make their way online. See you in 2015.
-To the people I didn't have many specific moments with: Ben, Reilly, Sunny, Darrel, Chris, and everyone else I talked with, thanks as well. It's been a long 9 days, so I'm having trouble remembering everything, but I truly did have a good time with everybody.
-Most importantly, thanks to my good friend Zac. We may not have talked much this year out of busyness, but you still remain one of my closest friends, even half way across the country. Thanks for putting up with my hatred of hotel carpeting, my inability to finish that last Budweiser, and allowing me to stay with your for the better part of a week. Even if at times it seemed like I wasn't having fun, I had an amazing time overall and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I don't know when I'll be back, but seeing how many friends I made since Tuesday, it'll probably be sooner rather than later.
As for me, the way I feel about footbag hasn't changed since getting home. I didn't worry myself too much about competition, and my poor performance in Circle or Rippin Run didn't get me down. I played pretty well in the sidelines, and hit more new tricks in 3 days than I had in 3 months. I always enjoy playing with other people, because I can use it to reflect in my game what I'm not doing correctly (usually going too fast, but I have nothing to compare to when I play solo). Nick said to me that I'm right on the edge of being a really great player, and I agree. However, I don't want to push that and burnout on this sport yet again. It's happened multiple times this year already, and I know if I go back into training mode, I'm going to end up hating footbag. I enjoy playing too much and have way too much fun with it to do that to myself, so I'm going to continue my casual solo sessions once I get back to school. Maybe I'll get around to choreographing my dream routine for some tournament along the road.
There's a video from the Tuesday session that Zac and I had on youtube with some stuff that I'm pretty proud of; blazing drifter bsos is certainly one of them. You should watch the video, even though it's 7 minutes.
Thanks again to everybody, and I'll see you all soon.

I have not, Zeb.
Played yesterday, which was odd, because I've become so accustomed to playing with other people in the past 2 weeks. I twas still fun, and nice to get back into my own rhythm.
I did way too much blazing during USO, getting ready for Big 1 and Big 3, and my knee is starting to feel it. I think I'll take a break on my strong side, while I catch up on flip. Once both knees are hurting the same amount, I'll know that the sets are equal.
Not much in the way of highlights yesterday, but working on playing more genuinely. I did end with a good one though:
double blender bsos

Played again today for a little bit. Entertained seven or eight little kids for a while by showing them some stuff. Twas fun, and I hope I see them again.

I've been back at school for 2.5 weeks and I think I've played three times, and I'm really ok with that. I've been really busy, and these days I'd rather hang out with my girlfriend/housemates or play piano (much rather play piano).
I won't be making East Coasts everybody. I did intend to go when I got home from USO, but the spark has faded yet again. It'll be back though. Hope you all have fun.

Going back to school for the last time tomorrow. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm going to make the best of my last 4 months at Siena.
I've been playing 1-2 times a week this past month. Getting back into footbag form is one of the most frustrating things I've ever done. It's like my body knows how to play like I did back in August, but my mind's forgotten how to make it move correctly in the months of break. Oh well, I'm slowly getting back to where I was.
I went to NYC for the little get together at the end of the year, and visited some family while I was there. It was a great trip, and I'm still shocked that everything went off without a hitch (staying at a different place each night, going back and forth to Long Island, not knowing where I was going to stay the first night, not really knowing where I was going when I got off the bus), but it all worked out perfectly. I also played really great for the 5 sessions I had the week before trying to get back into shape. I think the adrenaline and thrill of playing with friends did it, because I haven't even come close to playing that well since getting home. I hit Big Apple both sides on the first night, but other than that it was just normal stuff. It was great to play with everybody, and adventuring in the city with friends is a ton of fun.
This is also the first time in 4 years I haven't got to NYJ in Chicago. I'm not really into footbag enough right now to take a plane trip, but it was kind of fitting that I ended up not going: Mayor Dailey is no longer in office, so the sports event that NYJ is a part of didn't happen and the event changed locations; Zac also ended up not going, but considering that we always go to this event to hang out, it's funny that we both didn't go without coordinating with each other. It did look like fun, and I hope everyone who went had safe travels and a fun time. Maybe I'll see you next year.
Hope everyone is doing well, and talk to/see you all soon.
Edit: Also just realized that I started this during the first month of my Freshman year. Didn't seem like four years ago that I sprained that ankle and my life was over.

Re: Matt is still alive
So I'm playing footbag again, fancy that.
I haven't played more than a few times since US Open 2011; I was busy with my final year of college and since graduation I've been adjusting to working full time. I only started playing again for exercise within the last couple months but I've gotten back to the point where I don't suck too bad and I feel like I'm falling in love all over again.
I don't have anything specific that I hit because I'm still relearning how to play, but I will say that I'm getting better every session and could possibly be back to where I was in another month. Probably no more blazing on my strong side because that knee is giving me problems but we'll see.
Miss you all and hope to see everyone soon,
Matt
