took the day off shred yesterday.
i felt strong enough to play, but wanted to give an extra day to get as close back to 100% as i can.
took 2 oz of Asea for maintenance / repair.
hopefully i can wrangle up another kingstonian tonight for drilling.
i'm pretty excited about my game right now, i think i'm departing from the plateau i settled on for a while & am seeking new heights.
open set is aptly named, as training it opens up your game. even my clipper loves that i am drilling open. moar shuffle inc!

so pumped for shred! looks like it'll be a solo sesh this eve.
i just did 30 minutes of lymphasizing. i notice a difference from before taking Asea--positioning was far more stable. i should try slacklining again!
endurance & mental acuity are the two most noticeable benefits thus far. the recovery time is also very strong.
after taking yesterday off, i have absolutely zero pain, not even an ache in my legs--that's after playing nearly 2 hours every day for 5 days straight.
the change i feel towards mental acuity directly affects every physical action i take during training. so, while the enhancement of mental acuity is not directly related to physical growth, it is dramatically affecting physical growth due to higher intellectual throughput during exercise.
aka, train smarter, not harder.
in past experience, i would always train hard & burn out before other players were done playing. or i would train hard & just not stop, but the next day or two would be a writeoff. either way, my best stuff always happened in the first hour of play, & the last hour would always be lacking.
the last few sessions have felt different. i have hit very strong elements deep into sessions. i can train a single concept with more focus for a longer period of time. one solo session earlier this week was nearly 100% drilling of open set, which paid off big time @ the kfm shred on wednesday.
it doesn't feel like i have more energy, i just don't get tired.

update on friday's session:
was awesome to get home from work & have a message waiting from Derrick, wanting to have a session.
we played for almost 2.5 hours on friday night.
my weight fluctuates like crazy. i think it is due to the amount of coffee i drink with sugar during work days, & probably too much sodium intake which is causing water retention.
my pre-session weight on friday: 177.
post-session: 169.
shedding 8 lbs in a session is pretty crazy, but i'm sure that's mostly water weight.
now, there were 2 things about my pre-session schedule that changed on friday.
a) 30 minutes of lymphasizing.
b) i did not perform core exercises prior to playing.
while the lymphasizing did help my breathing, the core exercises are absolutely essential to performing at peak during a training session.
it took me the first half hour of the session to warm up my abs. for me, i carry a lot of stress on my shoulders, & if my core doesn't get warmed up, too much focus for the movement of my body is governed by my shoulders as opposed to my hips & stomach.
after about half an hour, i was able to really start pushing again. i made huge progress on shuffle. HUGE! i feel like i unlocked something akin to the "Clavens" open set. ( not to say i could hold my own with him now, lol ) but i definitely feel like i have 4x the control over my open set that i had last week.
i hit magellan > smudge bsos + smear > open near mirage bsos + open far switch > open near pickup bsos, all one string.
i also hit far illusion > smudge > paradon rpt. illusions definitely getting better.
maybe solo session tonight, maybe another night off. not 100% sure. tuesday is shred with dante, wednesday is KFM meeting.

last night i played with derrick.
everybody in kingston is growing stronger right now, it's a very invigorating scene.
i finished the session by footing a weaving torque, that would have landed clean ( the bag was square on the clipper ) if i didn't step in a puddle of sweat & fly right off my feet.
worked very hard on correcting my flip whirl, which is what caused me to tweak my knee on friday. i hit a lot of flip whirls, & none caused me pain so long as i stayed focused. my flip far whirl in particular has been giving me problems. my hip pivot must not be quite right on that side. will work more on whirls tonight.
more progress on shuffle, & i worked on ducking dexes. weaving switches, diving pickups, ducking switches mostly. i really like weaving switch, like, a lot. atomic is getting easier to put in strings, although it's mostly legbeater at the moment.
* * *
on the Asea front, i notice a small measure of instantaneous recovery between the warm up & training stages.
as in, i do leg lifts, crunches & push ups @ home. then i bike to the shred location & train. i notice that when i leave my house to get on my bike, that my muscles feel like they are rebounding, like the stress i put them through in the warmup is actually making them feel stronger than before.
i realize this is what a warmup is meant to do for you, but i found it curious that i could actually feel that difference in a pronounced fashion, where in the past i operated on a certain level of faith that the warm up was doing its job.

2 nights ago:
very poor session. i did everything right in preparing for the session, i just wasn't feeling it. it was still fun to kick with dante & derrick. an interim session. more work on flip whirl & torques.
last night:
great, great session. played with derrick. more flip whirl work. torques are so easy now. i had some good shuffle combos w/ open, shut, step & atomic. plenty of ducking & spinning dexes. double pickup bs.
nothing conclusive about Asea after first test bottle, but it certainly feels like it has an impact. most pronounced effects are: mental clarity, focus, endurance & recovery.

i will be getting an ARC membership this winter. nothing will stand in my way! i am obliterating winter fatigue here & now!
i need to make a new busking sign. when will the worlds location for 2012 be announced? i made good money in 2010 with the "Help me get to World Championships in California" sign, with the official worlds banner. maybe i should use the promo stuff from finland for a sign. we have about another month or so of prime busking weather in kingston before we head for cover.
yes, greenwood! shred will happen! rip it up in london! i am working on the KICKASS3 video ( finally, i know, rawrgh! ), you certainly kicked some ass that weekend.

Dude... awesome. We can totally shred in the ARC. Maybe I could even book us the old spinning room by the gym upstairs so we would have our own spot to play. I'm sure we can find room somewhere else in there.
Worlds 2012 will be either France, Poland or USA... those are the 3 I've heard anyway. Let's just make a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS sign with IFPA logo?
Too bad you and John can't make London this weekend but I'll see you soon enough!

if there was a shred to determine worlds location, it would be poland. that circle comp final was ridic!Dio wrote:Worlds 2012 will be either France, Poland or USA... those are the 3 I've heard anyway.
france could mean the return of 2008 circle champ serge kaldany??
usa would be portland probably?

i was speaking with a regular customer today about physical training. he used to train for high jump fairly intensely ( he could jump just under 2 metres ), so i asked him about training for increasing my vertical, mostly out of curiosity, as i haven't put too much thought into whether that would actually benefit footbag training.
he told me, power squats & stair climbing are the way to go. when he described "bounding" to me, it made a lot of sense in context of footbag.
"bounding" is when you climb stairs by hopping on a single leg. a typical "bounding" rep is going up a flight of stairs by bounding 1 step at a time, then walk back down. bound up 2 steps at a time, walk back down. bound up 3 steps at a time, walk back down.
i thought bounding 3 steps at once was pretty impressive, then he told me he was bounding 4 steps at a time at his peak.
i don't know what i will do with that knowledge, but i found it interesting. i am getting a gym membership tonight for the winter months & i will need another exercise to take up an hour of my day once the biking season is over. this might be a good one to look at.

dante pointed out a big weakness in my clipper form tonight, which is almost an unvoluntary immediate set from an opposite clipper or osis. you can see it many times in this string. i felt like i made progress towards the end. it was fun having to muscle my way through my terrible positioning to find the right spot to freeze. my legs were bloody tired after this, haha.
i don't know if it's right, but 3:58 - 4:08 felt strong, i will try to emulate that feeling again tomorrow.

i love footbag.
i have had to adjust my training goals a little bit. i started out with the goal of playing footbag every day. i kept this up for just under 5 weeks, then last week i felt a twinge in my left leg that took me back to the bad side of 2003. nothing dire, just a subtle reminder of past experience.
so instead, i must ensure just that i work out every day with some rotation to let my legs heal between sessions.
soon, i will start swimming. i have also started walking more. i had a realization lately that i actually bike more than i walk. i feel more comfortable on the wheels than on the earth. so it has been a nice change of pace to go on some long walks & also gives a much greater opportunity to practice my breathing. the way my hips are positioned on a bicycle, with my back bent forward to lean over the bars, makes it more difficult to isolate my breathing with only my diaphragm--i can't help but breathe partially with my chest.
my nutrition is arguably better now than it ever has been in my life, but i still have distance to travel yet.
i have cut out caffeine, refined sugar & all bread products entirely. most of my diet is raw fruits & vegetables, with the exception of eggs & chicken.
my raw foods are spinach, broccoli, cucumber, tomato, carrot, banana, red grapes, raspberries, blueberries & last but certainly not least, hemp.
hemp is loaded with protein & EFAs ( omega-3s & 6s ) & blends in well with almost anything.
typically, i isolate my fruit sugar consumption to post-workout to reload muscle glycogen & have a high protein meal about an hour after that. sometime during the day, i have a mountainous salad that takes me about an hour to eat.
i have been reading more & more about people who turn their lives around & achieve the highest physical goals in their lives at later ages than you would expect.
Rich Roll is 43, he is considered one of the healthiest humans on the planet. he was 50 pounds overweight when he was 40 & transformed himself into one of the world's elite endurance athletes. he completed 5 marathons in 5 days down in hawaii.
Chrissie Wellington is 33, she never was athletic earlier in her life, but has become the greatest women's endurance athlete of our time. she wins some of her races by HALF AN HOUR.
i am realizing how young it is to be 30. "30 is the new 20." plenty of time to see what this human is capable of.

thanks guys ) i won't let you down!
in the interests of further dietary exploration, today is day 1 of fruitarianism. it's a pretty natural transition from what i have been eating as of late.
the basic idea is 100% raw diet, comprised of about 90% fruit, the remaining 10% being greens-based.
i recently learned that ben benulis is also working this diet. awesome! we were 2010 worlds roomies. what an awesome time that was.
there is a very inspiring blogger that goes by the moniker, "The Fruitarian". his name is michael arnstein, he is an ultra-distance runner that has been on this diet for about 5 years now.
http://thefruitarian.com/
my weight had been dropping on my previous diet, but i have plateaued at around 175lbs. i know my body composition has been changing since i stepped up my core exercises, but i really do want to be light as a feather in the long-term in order to minimize stress on my body.
i also am still getting twinges in my left leg that make me wary of stress fracture, & i am interested in how fruitarianism affects recovery time.
i biked into work today ( 10km ) & ate 1 kilo of green seedless grapes when i got here. my head is a bit cloudy right now, but my body feels great.
short term goal: throw down HARD when Mathieu Giard-Montpetit comes to visit Kingston later this month. that means playing it smart for the next two weeks & listening to my body.

footbag stuff:
torques "clicked" for me during saturday's session. i feel much more in control of that trick now.
torque & drifter are my two prime targets for drilling for the next few weeks.
i also have a SHREDBAN on ducking tricks for myself for the next while. my propensity for ducking & spinning has caused my set height in general to be ridiculously high. working on torque & drifter has made this readily apparent. the past 2 sessions, i have passed the bag every time i unconsciously do a duck.
little things i hit on the weekend:
drifter > far drifter bsos
4 torques in a string
far torque bs
looking to extend my torque string next session.

Be careful with a sudden change in diet. For the last few years I've been an on and off pescatarian (no meats, but I eat fish). The only change I noticed, was my iron levels dropped. Now I take iron pills and am fine, but my first checkup after I changed my diet showed I was borderline anemic, and my doctor told me to be careful. So good luck with the new diet, but be careful to make sure you are getting all the stuff your body needs (e.g. protein and iron, which aren't easy to get in an entirely fruit diet).
thanks for the warning, ken.
i have a feeling in the end i will bring hemp hearts back into the mix to keep protein & EFAs at a good level. i will get a check-up at the beginning of November to see how the fruit feast is faring.
