Sounds like somebody's healthy and ready to kick ass.
Thanks man....that definitely made me smile. I have come to accept that I am where I am. I wished that I had one more un injured week to prepare a routine and my own sherd. But, considering the shit I had to pull of just to get to this comp, I am ridiculously excited to go to my first comp at east coasts, to see Jon S, meet Nick, Matt, and every one else there, to see all the shoes, the bags, the tricks, I mean I get fucking excited when I see a legover ( shout out to Nick P for knowing how many ripsteins he has done ), being in New Jersey, feeling of the night before, the morning of, the coffee, the stretching , the warm up, the wondering whos damn bag is going to be used in the circle, the tunes in my ear, the extra pair of gunits in my bag, the first sweat, the moment all nerves are gone and adrenaline picks up, the flow, the inbetween, the resting my legs so I can not only walk the second day but also play, the circles, the music the finish , the after party burger and beer, the surprises.....
I am very grateful to be going and to be able to kick at all and especially thankful not to have to play hesitant because of am injury...I am light, have been weightlifting and luckily had a couple of sessions to rebuild an injury, get muscle used to playing again, and work out some rust. Luckily right before I got hurt I had been playing often. Im not laying down 6 -8 fearless but Im feeling good and hope that when the bag is passed to me that it sticks around for a little while. Hope to play some horse while Im there .
( shout out to Nick P for knowing how many ripsteins he has done )
Flipside at least... 28 and counting lol Hoping to up that number this weekend.
Looking forward to meeting you too dude. PLEASE BRING THAT BAG I STITCHED YOU. The snake one. I'd love to see it again Can't wait to step in a circle with you and piss myself You're gonna kill it man.
Also... We we should try to get a Mobius> Mobius circle going. Doug Tank and Matt Cross will probably join us along with some others. We did that at NYFA. Fun times.

Write up in pieces.....
So..
Fri- Got off the plane in New Jersey after a long day of traveling. Jon picked me up from the airport ...my plane was late and it was raining . Glad to see jon again since its been a while since last time Ive seen him years before at New Orleans Jazz fest where I learned my first rev swirl, spin, and infinity swirl. His game has been a big influence on my own and I was greatfull for all his help with coming to New Jersey. After a glass of wine and a great meal I went to bed excited and anxious to get to the park.
Sat- woke up at 7:30...got dressed..pack a bag for the day and drove to the park . We probably arrived around 830-9. As we drove up ..the rain had stop and everything was still wet . There was an open field with four guys standing in the middle in a circle....except they werent kicking ...they must have been checking to see if it was a good spot to set up a net court or something but it looked funny because my first site of a footbag comp was four guys in a circle alone in the middle of a field doing nothing so I thought it was pretty damn funny.
Next , we went over to the paviliion and checked the ground. it was still early and no one was really there yet ....events werent happeninng until 1;30. Around 9 a car or too pulled up .. I think it was Jim and a couple of others... met Jim, Waylom, Dan, Mark, Drew, Will, and Jorden. Still no kicking really happening yet. Then when a car pulled up....I knew who Nick P was right away. I went over and said hi....it was surreal to meet nick and others that I have communicated with on internet but never met face to face. there was an instant bond between all of us. I was super excited and honestly was trying to hold back talking everybodies heads off, but it was as easy going as it could be. I have never in my life been a part of something like this. Guys from all over the place coming together instant freindship. It was like we had hung out for years. It was cool seeing nick;s smiling face get out of the car, his online personality is cool and motivating and in real life is even cooler. I was hanging out with jorden and mark bull about then. i had also just met Doug and pipebomb, both of which were super cool and easy to talk too. Also met and instantly reconized John Goode who is also super cool. I had a brief conversation with Doug about the similarities of musical improvisation and freestyle. I forgot exactly who told me this, but somebody said that I was shorter than they imagined....I thought it was funny. At this point I had started stretching a little and kicking and doing basic warm up stuff while still wearing my glasses. Those watching thought it was cool that I was adjusting my glasses mid run.
Then Jon and I went into town to get some starbucks. I was super glad because I knew that I couldnt make it through the day shredding if I didnt eat again. We sat outside and I ate a half a sandwich and ate a banana. Time to go back to the fun. After getting back , I put on my contacts and started to warm up. By this time there multiple circles going on. I thought to go and warm up by myself and then I think it was Doug T and someone else that came up to me and asked if they could join...of course I said yes.....I would rather take longer to warm up and play with others than be by myself and missing out on hanging out . It was super cool. Over the weekend I got to hang with Doug a little and felt like I had know him for a while. It was also really cool to see jordan and waylon. They both were very nice to me and I wish I could have spent more time with them. Then I went over and started to shred with Nick p, Dan, and John . It was unreal to be standing next to guys that I have seen footage of most of them and now Im getting to play right next to them. John was playing great and had good variety with sick tricks....he was going for BW>montage at that point I think. Nick was hitting really cool variations of mutilple tricks that I cant hit....his control with reverse swirls, spins, rolls, flappers, and mobius was super impressive. His excitement to see me was warming and made me feel welcome and like we had been friends for a while. Dan was showing off a great shuffle and went for p whirling swirl a couple of times which I thought was super cool....this is the first time I have even seen many of these tricks in person. Also , John G showed up and started busting hard right away. Without much warm up at all I saw him busting tripless and some 5s. His stlye is super cool and some of the coolest trick footage Ive seen came from him. Love the symp quantums .
At this time drew was on the mic and damn funny. Routines were coming up.. I heard drew annouce the seeding for the routines and I was top seed. I was surprised that at my first comp I was top seed , but when I found out that it meant that I went last I was glad. I watched a couple of the routines and stayed warm before mine. I was sure I was going to drop alot and honestly didnt care because I was having fun without competing. i think I felt almost no stress when I walked up to start my routine...I did second guess myself by almost switching my first trick from phoenix to dimwalk, but I figured if I played it safe from the start then I wasnt starting with the right attitude. I went for the 5 and got it...A good start...then I actually made it to the minute mark dropless. This is wher my choreograhy ended and my improve began. I think I forgot to take another break the whole rest of the routine and even missed my final cue, but managed to get through with 2 drops....the best I had ever done with teh routine. When it was 10 seconds left I heard the annoucer and the crowd cheer me on and even though I could barely breath I pushed through. When It was over I was so realieved and looking forward to circle comp.
Drew announced the circle pools and the order...it was nick p, john goode, jon sceider, and me in one circle. before we started I asked the judges the rules about pass backs and how many rounds we were going....we did 3 variety and 3 density. I was unsure if I was going to watch my competitors or not. I did a mixure of both... I watched a little of nick and john good but didnt watch jon too much because I was after him...I did however sort of keep a count on about how many tricks he was hitting....There was one string that he did over 40 tricks and i honestly relaxed when I knew this because i would have to go about that long too so...I started off with a 5 and then got comfortable. I wish I could remember exactly what tricks I did or what tricks the other did, but I will just have to wait for footage. I do remember that for my last round of density I hit swirling spinnig butterfly to start my run and got some cheers.
I remember being stressed in the circle especially when I basically wasted one run in each round. I had a couple of long strings and started to feel better about advancing when I realized that the other were not really hitting any 5s in the runs....so i tried to hit a longer run and add some 5s .
After Circle results were announced I honestly almost cried. I couldnt believe that I was seeded top for the day and now was winning both events. I wished then that the cometition part was over but we still had one more day.
A couple of minutes later I saw John Goode and Nick P having a mobius t mobius circle.....I had only hit the combo a couple of times, but after a few attemts got it.....we had fun and watched either other play . I loved being around john and nick. They were both super cool and super encouraging in the circle during and after competition. then nick and I got to have a session with just me and him for a while. It was great. We got to trade tricks and to watch nick do a swirling spinning set ( and every other trick he did) was super sick. he has got the set pretty damn good and I enjoyed spending time pretending to be a coach and he hit swirling spinning butterfly and osis for the first time right in front of me.. Nick is motivated and super cool....his game will go as far as he wants it to go.
After my legs were telling me to save something for the next day, jon asked if we were hungry. AFter an entire day of burning calories and shredding we were all starved. I wanted to take a shower before we ate, so I rode with will and nick p to their hotel to take a quick shower and to hang for a few min. It felt great to be riding in Nick's car and hanging out. After we went to the hotel we met up with Jon and headed to eat Italian food. The place was great. We had the upstairs to ourself and pizza and bbq calamari was great. AFter I really wanted to go hang out at the hotel but both Jon and I were super tired and knew we had to be up at 7;30 am when all the other players would still be sleeping.
Went back, had a glass of wine, stretched and went to bed. I had trouble sleeping for many reasons. Time zone change got me, sleeping in a different place and also knowing that after day one I was in the lead didnt help me sleep. I was so happy to have performed well on the first day and was nervous about the second day. Routines I got real lucky and I fet better about circle. Could I perform the same way on the second day? I was ready to find out.
Waking up the second day to french toast and juice was great . We pulled up to the park and started to take out the tables and all the stuff we had to set up before the others got there. Due to the park double booking the area, we had to switch to the tennis courts the second day. We were exteremly lucky with the weather. AFter moving the generator and putting up the tents, it was me jon, jim, dan, and mark bull. I was sore from the day before but knew that after I streched and warmed up that I would be fine. No one was there yet and it was hours before comp would start so I asked mark if he wanted to take a walk and go to a sandwich shop near by. I really enjoyed talking and hanging with mark. It was great to hear about him and him wife and mark and I are close in age. Super cool guy and glad to be able to have a quick lunch while talking to him. After we got back there were a couple of more guys there. A guy cam up to me and asked me if he could interview me about our sport. I told him sure but If I didnt know something I wouldnt try to explain it. He asked me about footbag rules , the game, and other questions....im curious if ill ever see the tape of that interview.
at this point I decided to start warming up . WE had a large circle going where everbody was basically just kicking , stretching and doing basic stalls. We were just trying to get some blood flowing and begin a slow warm up. AT this point we started to see all the others show up. Nick , John , Jorden , will, Nate, Drew, Dan, and everybody else. We began to play and have fun. The circle was me John , Zac, and Doug I think. We were messing around with different tricks and warming up further. John and I walked to the bathroom across the field and when we got back intemiate circle and routines were about to start. I saw a bunch of 4 square going on and never got a chance to play. Doug asked me to, but after f-o-o-t-b-a-g- we never got back to it. Any ....intermediate routines went well...Mark did good and Jorden won circle. I saw some of the routines before me . When I went up and was fially ready ...the generator then went out....After a delay then I got to go. I lost my warm up a litlle but blame my performace the 2nd day on losing focus and missing choreography more than anything else. I think I made it to about the mintute mark before I totally lost it and started dropping.. I remember hitting some fives, some 4s and some ducks but knew that it was a bad run through. After I was done I was kind of pissed that I had messed up but felt super gratefull to have done well the day before and hope that difficutly would give me enough points to place high. When hearing the results and finding out that I had won, I felt so damn happy I almost cried. I really didnt expect to win routines and felt so lucky that the judges place me at the top. John , Jon, or Nate could have easily won. I felt somewhat of a relief because I had won an event and circle hadnt even happened yet.
Circle finals were me , jon, dan, and nate, . I was anxious to get to circle. After breifly watching Nate and Dan the day before I knew that the finals circle would be harder for me than the day before. Dan and Nate had started thier density runs the day before with 8-10 4s and Nate was hitting blurry drifters in and out of 4s like it was nothing, so I knew that I would need some 4s and 5s to beat the game that I saw. In circle I got to go last. I sort of watched and kept a trick count on everybody but also kept focus on what I wanted to do the next run. Dan wasnt playing as well as the day before and it was a releif because he was hitting some cool shit. Nate was hitting his fours but not hitting many fives, I also noticed that after he left his shuffle he never really got back to it within the same run . Jon was playing way better than the day before and laying out 40 contacts with whirling swirls, torques, dragons, spins, and some other variety....he was also doing more ripwalks and 4s than usually. When I got the bag I just thought......I have to go more than 20 contacts , hit a 5 to start , hit some 3s and 4s and start one hitting 5s and I should be fine. I did mess up one or two runs, but played well enough to win circle. I briefly remember hitting p torque>p torque>hand catch but honestly am looking forward to the footage because I dont really remember how I played other than that.
Right after circle was over the pressure was off. Dan , Jon, Nate and I kept playing and it was super fun. I remember hitting things at that moment that I hadnt hit all comp... I hit ducking marius>run . swirling mobius>run. mobius>ptorque>ptorque>run.
I circle final results were annouced I was the 2011 east coast footbag champ. I had won both events. Guys were congratulating me and I felt incredible. I had won. After years of not going to a comp, work, money problems, plane tickets , hoping , not knowing if I could go, Injury, not knowing if I could play, weather conditions and trying to get back a game before comp I had won my first competition. Wow. I felt grateful to my friends and competitors to be the winner . I felt confident with circle but super lucky to win routines after multiple drops in finals.
I called my wife Michelle, my dad, and Richard Abshire. Holy Shit I one!
I wish that the comps wasnt almost over. We played until the sun went down. Doug , Nick , John , and me played horse and f-0-0-t-b-a-g for a while. It was super cool and super laid back to play and hand with them. This was some of the most fun ever. Doug, John and Nick were all hitting different tricks. Nick is hard as hell to play in horse and his reverse swirling career ender basically just caused us to pass the bag around and give him our letters. Oh yeah...and I loved the spikey bag. Most of the weekend I had played with an abshire medium facile 32 that was super choice but I developed a love for the footfighter spikey bag too . I learned far reverse swirl from doug and spinning flapper from nick. john show me some really cool stuff too. P fluxing inside catch and other cool tricks. It was nice having nick p be so encouraging and complimentary to me. I am glad to have helped or inspired any one that I can. With a little coaching and two days, I watched Nick hit janiwaker, swirling spinning butterfly and swirling spinning osis. SUPER SICK!
I had tried to get a couple of fearless links at the end but wasnt having much luck....the day before I had hit 5 and dropped on 6 within two tries. highlights playing for me was ....playing with EVERYBODY!!!! trick highlights were bsosing blurry torque in front of nick, hitting dimwalk swirling dragon first try in front of nick and jon, hitting reverse swirling symp whirl bsos, hitting ducking marius bs, starting my last run of density with swirling spinning butterfly and learning new tricks.....far rev swirl, flapper stuff, fluxes, and other stuff. After a while ....the awards were about to be given out. I was super exited to win and twice as excited to be able to meet such nice people. I cant wait to see all of them again.
later that night, a couple of us went to get beers and food one last night before it was over. I really enjoyed the company and the night was great
Overall, I left New jersey feeling incredible. I am a part of a great community of wonderful people. The friendships, courtesy and class of all attendees of the comp was marvelous. I have never been around such a cool group of people and Im super happy to have seen others that play footbag and super happy to have made new friends . I will follow each pf your blogs and post more now than ever.

Today I was super tired but worked on different stuff ( in Q3s for the first time in a while)
-Did various toe stall like in the new jm video
-hit spinning legover > dlo bs
-datw in > datw out
-some good double downs
-consective frigid osis
-bs p blender
- spender
- controlled short runs
-far rev swirl bs (thanks Doug )
- bent down bs (feel like it helps with barflys)
Im currently having a sharp pain in my back and neck area due to lifting backs of rocks......gonna take off weightlifting and shred for a few days also have a pain in my right knee....dont really know why
Have a new goal and plan for my game
-I want to make my form energy effecient and way more controlled.
-I want to have way more interesting runs with multiple cool 4-6 packs in each run . Not so much add hunting but building cool controlled runs of 3's and up
- I want to take J Moir's advice and learn how to set to the spot where I need to instead of sliding as much as I do
- I want to have a form that will allow me to increase my skills by alot and also be a better form for my body and the impact it takes....this will be beneficial in the long run.
- I will continue to experiment with routines.
- i will get back in lavers or qs to train in
- I will develop a toe game
- I might even try to double EVERY record that I have
Yesterday
worked on 10 drills from Moir.
- hit back pedaling toe stalls.
- bent knee toe sets without moving around too much
- inside kicks and stalls focusing on low arcing sets and facing the same direction throughout
- consecutive frigid osis X10 bs
- datw bs
I feel that this type of play is something I have messed with before and look forward to the benefits of rebuilding with a new approach
I will soon start putting out regular footage of my sessions
New Orleans Footbag JAMbalaya: the week after xmas. Do it!
thats pretty damn funny and clever too.
I actually am going to be playing music wed - saturday in bolixi mississipii about an hour away from new orleans. I will have my own hotel room , be playing music in a club every night, pool access, many cool casino clubs to go to at night, shred all day space either indoors or at the beach and will come back during the day fri to see ,my family in new orleans. Any footbager who wants to shred all day and have a place to stay let me know.

-inside kick >inside kick....low arching set......pointing toes feels different . helps with arc but not sure how far to do it.
-alternating kicks
-back pedaling toe delays
-bent knee toe flicks
-inside catches with low arm and putting feet down in the same spot
-clippers with mininal movement but still on toe
-alternating clippers slow and controlled with arcing set and body turn
-pixie with closing off the shoulders before set
-alternating clippers with good form and body facing front with minimal movement
-pointing toe helped with blenders
Blender>p blender bs
food bs
-the drill was backing pedaling toe delay>pointed toe clipper>pointed toe blender>pointed toe p blender
-wraps
-walkovers
-frigid osis
Daryl Genz is coming to New Orleans on business and we are going to get to shred....Im looking forward to meeting Daryl and also shredding.
I still have a slight pain in my right knee that started during east coasts, but I think I know what it is from.....when I put my right foot down on the ground for a left clipper I have a tendency to fall back to my heels on the set and point my toe too far out instead of in during planting which puts extra stress on the knee. It doent hurt with the new form focus though just when I messed up.
I will continue to work basics unless (like the blenders) I feel that something can be learned from a more advanced drill and still controlled .
So rad you get to shred with Daryl! I miss kicking and hanging out with you dude. You oughtta play a show at Penn State I can't believe how well you taught me Janiwalker and those Swirling Spinning 5's you helped me hit. I'm definitely going to take you up on that suggestion of trying Moir's drills. It sounds like something I could use and should use in my time off from footbag. I plan on starting them this Friday, during our PSU Crew session. Check your PM's, I sent you one after East Coasts Peace man. Hope your knee and neck and back feel better soon.
Had two sessions with Daryl G. BLADES. I played today . I first thought with the way that my right knee is feeling that I couldnt play but warming it up and being cautious of form the second session helped. I am going to rest my legs for at least a week and stretch and just do very basic kicks and stalls.
Daryl is a Super nice guy and a great player. More to come of the session and possible footage of our first session. I thought I would just write some tricks down before I forget. I have learned the following tricks during or since east coast.
gyro heel- nick p
heel-nick p
ducking knee pincher- nick p
ps illussioning inside delay- John Goode
atomic symp ss mirage---oh shit cant remember who....think it was nick but could have been john
far rev swirl- Doug Tank
far twirl- Doug tank i think
leaning set - nick p
stepping far double switch- (inspired from something Daryl said)
two bag juggle X 5 to switch feet X 3 and back - Daryl
double inside kick first kick aimed horizatonl second kick up- Daryl
nuclear legover-inspired by daryl
no look behind the back dragon- daryl
heel pinch set to toe - daryl
heel rool down to pincher - daryl
i hit a clean blurriest by pointing my toe----I will get into this after I rest my legs because if pointing my damn toe is what I needed to do to clean up my double downs then I will be so happy.
step of of whirling swirl- Darly- ill work towards whirling swirl>blur
datw both ways with pointed toes down on first dex- Jorden Moir Dayrl told me too
toe kicks with less arc - Moir
footed the following tricks
spinning double switch, sailing far torque, sailing barfly (the, but not for long), toe set ducking inspinning ducking butterfly, swirling marius (ive hit it but not today), swirling spinning butterfly swirl ( i want this trick so damn bad), swirling mobius screw was footed two or three times at the end of my first session with daryl and my daughter madeline - Thanks Abshire
Most of my time since east coast has been resting then starting to work on what J Moir sees i need to work on in my game. Have a session was good for me but now rest then back to basics with a new mindset and new tricks.
Hell yes Mark. Props on those unusuals you got from me. Also great stuff you got from everyone else. The BS Tap was DEFINITELY John Goode though... That's the one I almost broke my back trying, remember? And Far Twirl you did get from Doug. Shit man... way to get inspired by all those players. Really great to see how much you got out of ECC and all of us players there. I do hope to see some of that heel stuff in some upcoming videos. I watched the vid above and I can honestly say that your form already looks loads better with Jorden's tips. I've been dabbling with the drills and from them I learned how to do Boychuk toe stalls with the flip of the toe how he does them. Pretty sweet. Can't wait to see these drills pay off in the near future. Rest up this week then annihilate shit next week, good plan I'm gonna try to hit a new one for you tomorrow during our PSU session.. It feels like it's getting easier, but we'll see. Ttyl man
